Gyro controls are finally becoming more widely accepted by game developers, with huge titles like Call of Duty and Fortnite both now supporting the feature. Upcoming hero shooter Valorant, which is finally coming to consoles, will not incorporate the functionality, however – as it’s worried about giving PS5 players an unfair advantage over those on the Xbox Series X|S.
Sony’s futuristic DualSense includes a whole suite of features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a very accurate gyroscope. The latter can be used in collaboration with traditional analogue sticks to allow players to finetune their aim, adding a level of precision that closes the gap on keyboard and mouse control.
However, because Valorant will be completely crossplay between consoles, developer Riot is concerned it may be seen to favour one player base over another. “[Gyro controls are] not a blind spot for us, but it’s not supported on Xbox controllers natively,” product management lead Coleman Palm explained. “If we leaned super hard into gyro being ‘the way to play’ on console, we’d be heavily favouring PS5 over Xbox, which we don’t want to do.” Palm goes on to explain that he does think “gyro aiming is cool”, and thus it’s clearly something Riot has looked into.
While the explanation is totally reasonable, it’s no less disappointing for PS5 owners, who’ve come to enjoy gyro aiming across a number of titles. While it’s important for the competitive aspect of Valorant that it doesn’t offer any individual platform an advantage, fans may feel frustrated that Xbox’s perceived limitations are once again holding PlayStation back.

This is, without a doubt, the weirdest console generation in my opinion.
please push square this fanning the console war flames is becoming increasingly tiresome
@trev666 It’s crazy. The different box means the least of all this generation and a small portion of the internet doesn’t want to let that go. But because that extremely small portion is super vocal, websites will keep reporting on it like it’s some major thing. The console war does not exist outside some Twitter warriors and YouTubers but it is constantly discussed.
@IamJT thats probably because push square use twitter as a source for alot of the stories they publish
@trev666 How is this fanning any flames in any way shape or form? A lot of people were asking if Valorant would support gyro controls, because they want it to be available as an option.
A lead developer explained candidly why it doesn't have gyro controls, and we reported on it and pointed out it was a reasonable (albeit disappointing) explanation.
Anything else you're seeing is in your own head. This is quite clearly news that is relevant to some people — and if it's not relevant to you, feel free to not read/comment on it.
@trev666 The source is quite literally Coleman Palm, the project lead on Valorant. I.e. a person in a very high position who knows a lot about the development decisions made on the game.
You're right, we're using a Twitter post — but it's not like we're reporting on a random person. This is a person with one of the highest profile positions at Riot Games!
Love that I get to read you spanking these nerds in the comments with that insane skull profile picture hahaha
Why spoil it for the Majority just to please a minority ?
Gyro aiming is an absolute game changer! I won't be playing Valorant, so this shouldn't bother me, but I'm tired of Xbox controllers holding back gyro from becoming mainstream. Microsoft needs an updated controller asap.
Sometimes, I play Xbox games on my Steam Deck oled thru remote play or streaming just so I can use gyro if I want to. Same with some Playstation games. Gyro support is another reason why I choose Switch versions of games over Playstation/Xbox even with lower resolutions, frame rate, etc.
@trev666 You're off the mark here, how is this not news? Statement was made from a senior developer (doesn't matter where the statement was made) why they didn't implement Gyro controls which many people were interested in.
He in very clear words said it's because of Xbox so why are you blaming Push Square for that? If anything you should be screaming at Xbox to get Gyro into their controllers like everyone else, they have the money to implemented by tomorrow morning!
@trev666 got to agree and its why I practically stopped posting on here and on pure. They fan the flames constantly with baiting articles and then play dumb when you call them out on it. The way they frame and edit the news sometimes is crazy.
Like you say it gets very tiresome and leads to utter garbage in the comment sections. Garbage in, garbage out.
I'm pretty sure most people will just plug in a M&K if they really want to play a super sweaty game like this.
Sounds like a reason to not release it on Xbox then, like so many others are already doing^^ ...just kidding btw
Not having gyro for a shooter on consoles,is like not having rollback in a fighting game. It is such an inconvenience, for such a game changing experience.
That's why I enjoy Paladins and Titanfall 2, they have gyro aim built in for every platform(which supports it).Hell, not built in gyro is the main reason that I stopped playing Overwatch.
What’s new? The Xbox “dead” controller has meant cross platform games have lacked such innovations for generations. I was hopeful when I heard MS may be releasing a modern controller with such features, but haven’t heard anything on that since.
@zhoont it's a picture of one of the aliens from mars attacks and you're all nerds if you're using "gyro controls" same for people who use xim on console, at that point get a pc.
@trev666 what a silly thing to say.
@Deityjester I'm on Pushsquare. Yeah, I'm a nerd.
I can understand why they would take that position, but it must also be pointed out that Microsoft themselves have a PlayStation (and PC) exclusive feature that doesn't appear on their own consoles, and that's the VR mode for Minecraft. It may perhaps be a very minor fail for Sony in that they don't mandate that feature, but that's an argument that goes either way.
It is fascinating how much of a difference Gyro aiming makes for those little adjustments. In BOTW it was the only decent way to use the bow and arrow since the controls in that game suck. But I also understand the need to have parity between versions for cross play games but then you might as well not include PC gamers since the mouse is also something the Xbox doesn't have.
Also, I really hate how little third parties play with the Switch and Playstation controller features. Haptics are rarely used. Adaptive triggers wasted on mundane tasks. Then you play an exclusive and those pop with mostly incredible usage of those features. Stellar Blades really fun fishing and setpieces comes to mind or the vibrations in Rebirth when Shinras planes fly.
Seems like some people don't like Push pointing out the fact Xbox consoles are holding some games back for us PlayStation gamers.
Some people should be less sensitive and not accept inferior versions of what a game couldve been, bc they dont want to be "console-warring". Ridiculous times.
Personally, I love gyro controls and tend to use them in any game that supports them. I had pretty much zero interest in Valorant anyway, but if it did have gyro’s I may have been interested enough to at least try it. But they don’t, so I won’t. Shame really.
I have a sneaky feeling that these mature individuals questioning genuine news stories may feel differently if the news story in question was pro x-box and anti-PlayStation.
I am absolutely terrible with Gyro controls. I feel like I'm controlling a drunk guy trying to aim a weapon on the few games I've played that support it. I guess I just don't have steady enough hands to use it properly so this isn't an issue for myself.
However while I see what he means about trying to even the playing field between all players, I don't think allowing gyro is any different from allowing pro controllers vs standard controllers. Having those extra buttons available can give a sizable advantage too in a shooter yet they aren't locking off using one style or the other.
You also have people like myself who do not prefer gyro controls anyway so I think if I were them then I would reconsider. Especially if enough of their fanbase begins to ask for the feature.
This is a classic "punish the overachiever to cater to the lowest common denominator" move.
I can't believe that was their actual statement.
And? It's no different than the touch pad, haptics etc all being ignored by most AAA studios due to PC, Xbox and Switch, if you make a controller full of gimmicks you can't expect a game developer to cater specifically to said gimmicks when they develop for PC and Xbox too
It's like the switch most cross platform games on switch don't use all the joycon features because Xbox and PS5 don't use them
It should really only be the exclusives for each console that use the gimmicky features
Huge L. Every fps game should offer gyro now there is no exception why you shouldn't
Personally I've not found gyro aiming to make any difference when playing an FPS even online but 🤷.
Abit of a gimmick that the majority don't use. Abit like what's the point in the track pad but..... Each to their own
@DTfearTheBEARD Not only the controllers, Series S is the main culprit of holding back the current generation.
Not fanning the flames, just facts. Some developers mentioned this a couple of years ago. Not random twitter person but rather actual developers working on games.
It´s the reason why Black Myth Wukong is basically a ps5 console exclusive at this point: Series S can't handle the game and the insane parity rule from MS means the Series X doesn't get it either.
Way to go annoying your much much larger user/purchase base! Parricularly in an already crowded market.
(+ so many series owners will never spend money outside of Game Pass)
@arsmolinarc I've heard that the Series S has been holding back this Gen for years now.
Last year, Baldur's Gate was delayed because the co-op didn't run well on Series S. Microsoft gave in and dropped the co-op altogether if I remember correctly.
I'm a Series X & PS5 owner. Sometimes, I think Series S is holding back Series X from reaching it's full potential, especially when most 3rd party games run better on PS5 over Series X.
On the other hand, Series S is a great entry-level system perfect for families and kids or the less hard-core gamers. I know a few people who bought a Series S for their children, and they love it, especially with the value of game pass.
The Series S clearly isn't for me, but the value is there for people who want to enjoy this generation of games for around half the price of the more powerful systems.
@arsmolinarc
Too many devs these days dont have the ability to match their ambition, or aim far higher than you should given the hardware capabilities.
The series S keeping this sillyness somewhat in check is a good thing for PS5 / SX owners.
(And no, I dont and will never own a Series S or X.)
The PS5 and SX arent exactly powerhouse machines, and are not capable of doing much more than we have already seen.
Yeah this is a common problem - because PC and Xbox controllers don't typically support advanced stuff like gyros and more nuanced kinds of haptics all those fancy features are left unused on the Switch and PS5. It's a shame, but that's cross-platform development for you.
That’s what happen with multiplat, the game will always be based for the less powerful console.
"worried about giving PS5 players an unfair advantage over those on the Xbox Series X|S."
But they have cross-play with PC keyboard & mouse player's? If a
I am not missing something their statement is clearly bs.
By not having features like gyro aiming, haptic feedback (both features Switch joycons and pro controller have- although HD rumble is a bit primitive compared to haptic feedback) etc, the Xbox controller is holding back gaming much more than the Series S' weaker hardware is.
@trev666 console wars as people say it will always be a thing. Just like favorite sports teams, Mustang or Camaro. I honestly don’t mind it as it’s just competition.
You'd think "leaning super hard" into a control scheme and making it an option in the settings (and maybe even automatically disabling it in detected cross-plat sessions if need be) are different things, but what do I know.😅 At least the functionality is acknowledged here and an excuse is given, as opposed to a wide range of [predominantly] single player PS4 titles from Saints Row series to the very first-party Horizon Zero Dawn.
Also, this whole talk is yet another reminder of Xbox not even supporting the feature even this generation - and that's the hardware for Switch to be supposedly "outdated" in comparison to?
I'm going to be honest, I had no idea fps games on PS5 even supported gyro controls. Personally their does nothing for me as I've never liked gyro controls in shooters. Sucks for those who like it I guess.
@Korgon If that's a issue steady hands then I'm totally screwed. 😂
