i haven’t tried it on ps5 & most likely never will. this generation is a joke , and ps plus is a scam

Kind of ironic that a series X/S can run PS2 games better than a PlayStation console can...but you didn't hear that from me.

I’m very happy Sony have started rolling out PS2 games but you have to ask where’s the point in doing so when you’re launching games to have worse resolutions and performances than they did TWO generations ago, whilst charging a pretty enough penny for them too.

Shocking and lazy from Sony

It’s a common release price. These games will all go down to £6.99 maximum as the common standard price (“sale” price).

But, as I said yesterday, Sony should have put more work into their emulator to run at a better resolution and performance, rather than just a basic emulation with a few quality of life features.

I know they are always scared of breaking games then getting a bad rep and needing to put work in to fix it, but they could just have a “performance” mode as an option and give a disclaimer.

It's kinda funny since the studio doing these ports/emulators (Implicit Conversions) is formed by one of those folks who created the PCX2 emulator on PC, which could do way more than the official PS4/PS5 ones.

Sony must give these people a very low budget to work with, otherwise we would have much better results (or Sony itself would do everything in-house)

Well Series X/S can upscale and run most PS2 games at 4K 60fps with PCSX2, I figured Sony would be just as good or better at the whole PS2 thing 😅

Again how can a few amateur developers make a better PS2 emulator (on similar competing hardware) than Sony themselves? Could someone with technical knowledge explain it to me?

@SLRC98 We were expecting better. Even the HD Remaster on PS3 runs better than this.

If the new versions are actually 480p, then that's good actually. Whenever I emulate I try out higher resolutions they look pretty, but I always shift back to native res because there's always little rendering glitches when uprendering.

Maybe they could give an option for scaling? Usually they don't and you're forced with HD. Having both in an official emulator for once would be nice. Same for PS1 and PS2, let me play at the native resolution.

It's interesting how this game is 20€ but Sly Cooper is 10€ and the Star Wars game only 5€.

@Tecinthebrain Probably because PCSX2 has been in development for 22 years and has over 300 contributors on Github.

@get2sammyb whe. They say its uprendered? Have they done anything to get rid of the jagged edges which is synonymous with games back then. The ps1 games because they where upscaled it removed most of the jagged edges. At 480p on a 4k tv if they haven't done anything to smooth out the edges it must look really bad. I love tombraiderbut before I buy I just wanted to check.

I played through the first level and thought it was fine and tbh, wasn't expecting anything better than the PS2 version of the game... would have been nice to get some sort of up-res and performance boost, but is what it is.. I guesss some games like Sly will work better than others; I did drop into the Xbox 360 version available on Series and it is a much nicer experience, so will be playing the rest of it over there

I dusted off my PS2 and played Tomb Raider Legend, while my wife played it on the PS5 next to me and to be honest the original looks way better, plays smoother and even has better sound. I think the emulation is somewhat lazy, especially as Sony have the source code of a PS2 but looks like it was coded as a school project.

I'd pay $60 for hd remasters of the 'trilogy' if there are as good as that earlier remaster collection. $20 for essentially a port is ridiculous. At least the RDR1 port looks a bit better and (I think?) runs in 60fps.

A platinum trophy is a good counter argument tho

Thankfully my PS3 still sits next to my PS5 and I have both the TR
and Sly HD Trilogies, so I might just boot them up.

It was once remastered in HD already...why not use that version? Cant believe a machine capable of raytracing and marketed as 8k-capable wouldn't handle that

I did buy it as i wanted it on PS5 and an excuse to replay it but the 360 version is by far the best console version.

@nomither6 Guess you missed 2023 that was one of the best gaming years ever. Funny you praise the PS3 with its lackluster ports, poor performance, awful licenced games, 360 versions being far better and everything bad about modern gaming starting with the PS3/360.

@SLRC98 xbox already has a solution for that for goin on a decade people were expecting sony to be able to do the same

The resolution hasn’t been a factor for me. I still think it looks great, particularly on my Portal. I’m having a blast with it.

@SLRC98 well, there's a free open source developed PS2 emulator called aethersx2 (now being continued as nethersx2) that can emulate the PS2 on midrange android devices at minimum 720p resolution. On a more modern chip set you can most likely get 1440p to 4k depending on the game. We're talking mobile here and made by hobbyists.
So seeing Sony deliver such underwhelming emulation on a much more powerful device is quite disappointing.

So a PS2 game running on a PS2 emulator looks and plays like a PS2 game and people are complaining??? What on earth do you expect?????? It isn't a port or a remake or even a remaster and hasn't been released as one of those things!!!!! It's an emulated game. The entitlement today is absolutely shocking.

It's a ps2 game, we are talking about, not PC. It plays how you remember, looks how you remember and for me that's a good thing. No reason to buy on pc.

@SLRC98 the bar is so low for some people these days that they should expect PS2 games to still run at the same resolution 24 years later. . . and then get charged 20x the amount for it compared to PC?

I have Legend and Underworld on PC. The last two great Tomb Raider games in my opinion.

@nomither6 which is funny you say that , i mean i love my ps3 i still have my ps3 hooked up to my tv , and play it time to time. but the ps3 even though it had amazing first party games ran 3rd party games worse then the 360. developers hated the ps3 if they weren't a sony studio.

@GamingFan4Lyf don't get me wrong i love the fact that the xbox does that ( even though it doesn't support 100% of the 360 games i own). but the fact that sony is starting to put improvements behind the ps2 emulator, adding trophies , making them look better. to me that's a good start and hopefully they'll keep adding games to this , and hopefully patch the other ps2 games they released with the new emulator. from a few videos i watched comparing the versions , it seemed like the fact they still want to release the games on ps4 kind of made them not run as well as the ps5 version. but it seems like they fixed that.

@FuzzieGinge88 Well, I think most people expect a multi-billion dollar company, with unlimited resources and a group of highly capable engineers, to be able to create an emulator of their own console that can do AT LEAST what other freely available emulators do, on PCs much less powerful than a PS5.

@GamingFan4Lyf That's exactly why Sony spent more time and effort on adding trophy's instead of actually creating a good emulator. They knew that the Sony faithful couldn't care less about quality as long as they got their precious shiny digital rewards.

I am so torn with this because I am a massive tombraider fan but paying £16 is a bit steep. I think that if you have the ps2 disc version of this, which I still have. You should be able to out the ps2 disc into the ps5 and get free access to it. It's obviously for financial reasons they do this but it would be great if they made a stand alone emulator that you could put your own disc base games in and play.

@twitchtvpat yes but the ps3 is still a powerhouse , and more powerful than the 360. i prefer the graphics of the ps3 too. love both consoles but there’s some multiplats that do run better on ps3, even the ones people claim run worse on ps3 i disagree with.

also it takes forever to boot up my 360 nowadays , idk if it’s dust or what , whereas my ps3 is on and signed in within 30 seconds.

The game is normally $6.99 on the Steam store, and is usually on sale for about $1. You can also get a few mods to upscale the textures and the pre-rendered cutscenes and you're golden.

If I'm being honest and critical, trophy support doesn't justify the poor quality and really high price point on PS5, when the game is dirt cheap on PC and you can run it on a potato without any mods.

@nomither6 i know this is never going to happen but i can still wish , that sony releases an official update that lets you use a ps4 /ps5 controller officially on the ps3. yes you can use those controllers on the ps3 , but it only sees the controller as a 3rd party controller. the ps3 will always hold a spot on my tv , with the hd collections of the better ps2 games , but the countless series it spawned , uncharted , killzone , resistance , infamous.

Just be happy that we are getting ps2 games finally. They are decent (it is a ps2 game after all) and allot of fun. That's all that matters.

@twitchtvpat right on , it was one of playstations glory days with a remnant of that ps2 feel 🤘 but don’t get your hopes up about controller support - ps3 seems pretty isolated these days , can’t even see your friends online and they can’t see you. I don’t mind the ps3 controller , i actually love it. is it better than the dualsense ? no , but the battery life and durability (despite its cheap feel) , and no intrusive touch pad is a plus . also call me crazy but the DS3 has better vibration than the dualsense , it’s so strong 😆

Got it on Steam with all the other old titles always go ones sale for 89p lol £20 or near for a game that's not even been upscaled properly wow. Clearly hoping to sell based on the fact it's got a platinum trophy

@nomither6 Still think to this day PS3 is the best blu ray player I still have my PS3 slim (non slide door version) I use it for very that and to play some of my classics. I still collect PS3 games I loved from 2nd hand stores and I try to buy games of it's store. Just installed a 1TB HDD in it to make sure I've got plenty of space

@Nakatomi_Uk that’s awesome , i have the fat model and slim , both consoles are a thing of beauty . i can’t comment on the blu-ray because i usually stream movies/shows, but ill take your word for it & im honestly not surprised that the ps3 has a better blu-ray player because $ony really went all out with the hardware at the time .

also what’s it like to install 1TB hard drive , you could fit half the ps3 library on there right ?

@Nakatomi_Uk i remember it was a big part of the ps3 , i used it so much because back then blu-ray players were actually pretty expensive , same with the ps2 being a dvd player.

@SLRC98 original Xbox games run at 4K/60 under emulation on Series X, that's what I would expect

@SLRC98 You can emulate PS2 games at 4K, or any res you like, on a PC. You can also run them at 60fps if they've been patched, and this game has. The PC that could do that could be way worse than a PS5. And as the article says, for less than 5% of the price of this new release, you could get the PC version that can run at any res and framerate.

@nomither6 I have a ton of games that I could still download to it and I'm collecting disc versions as well when I see a game I want and I still have lie 796GB left best upgrade I've done. I could mod the console but I really don't want too just want to leave it as it should be. Though I think I will change the coin battery in it soon as my PS2s is dead but it's ridiculous to get to it
