@Kidfried I remember when we played Bloodborne concurrently and honestly that helped me not be as scared of it while I played. I mentioned before too that the asynchronous online component of the game likewise helps quell the fright, as there is something comforting about knowing other people are “together” with you in the experience, even if they aren’t in the same room (or even the same country or playing it at exactly the same time).

But take that away and I would have been quite terrified of Bloodborne. Imagine the reassurance if Resident Evil had messages scattered throughout that said “Watch for a trap” or “Congratulations!” after a boss fight. Or even when I see a message that says “I am lost” or “I want to go home”, I think to myself “You and me both, virtual Buddy. You and me both.”

I’ve also thought about putting on Soma a couple times before, but I think I’ll skip it for now too 😅 @render @LtSarge

@Th3solution Very good point! Yea, those messages helped a lot in making the game more manageable.
Though for me Bloodborne is so over the top, that it's harder to imagine myself in a similar situation. A game like Resident Evil 7 is over the top too, sure, but there is something very relatable about walking through a house and wondering what those suspicious creaking sounds are.

@Th3solution Thinking Soma would be a nice palette cleanser between games for an evening home alone, was one of the dumbest mistakes I made last generation!

@render I'll let you know how I progress, bud. The last thing I did was watch the Birthday tape. The thing that makes me the most nervous right now is my ammo; I had to spend a lot of it on the last few big fights. Didn't you experience something similar?

Kidfried

render

@Kidfried That totally happened to me. It might have been after the birthday tape but I had about 4 of those mold things after me that I just had to run past. As far as I know they are still there waiting for me to go back 😆

Up until a certain point things really are in limited supply. I’d say it was worse than TLoU as at least you could stealth kill things in that but when you have no ammo in RE you struggle. The knife was pretty useless against those mold things and only really useful for the old house where you could dispatch the flying things.

That’s why I don’t fancy playing it on madhouse difficulty as that must constrain things even more.

@render That's why your molds probably spawned in my game, dang you!

@render @Kidfried I hated the mold. I thought they are one of the most lamest designed enemies I've come across. The Baker fam are hella cool though, in a nightmarish kinda way.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

I’m not far into Resi 8 (kinda stopped, I’ll pick it up again, everything feels a bit Scooby-doo) but I’m not enjoying Werewolves tbh.

@JohnnyShoulder @kyleforrester87 The Baker family we’re a bunch of nut jobs but there was something cool about them. The mold though, they were just plain annoying. For something that moves so bloody slow they seemed to have this uncanny ability to move their heads just as I pulled the trigger.

@kyleforrester87 Unless it's jam, I'm not interested.

@render Glad it is not just me, I thought I really sucked at aiming in the game.

@Kidfried Did you ever get around to finishing RE7? I left going straight into Village but might be tempted to if I have time before HFW comes out.

After over 10 years of having it in my backlog, I've finally started up the legendary Resident Evil 4. And it wasn't easy! I have two copies of the game, the Wii version and the PS4 one. I've gone back and forth for a long time now trying to decide which version to play through since both have their advantages and disadvantages. In the end though, I decided to go with the PS4 version just because I prefer playing with a regular controller plus I can utilise the system's rest mode so I can play the game in bursts.

So I've played the game for an hour now and it's so much fun and really intense. There are so many enemies but you do get a lot of ammo so that's good. It's just crazy what a huge leap this game is from RE3 considering it's a third-person shooter now. But it still feels like classic Resident Evil, which is nice. I can already tell this is going to become my favourite game in the series, it's just so much fun thus far. Can't wait to play more of it.

@LtSarge Those are great early impressions. I’ve come close to booting up RE4 a time or two this year. I needed to put some distance between it and TLoU2 so as to not get over-saturation of zombie games too close together. I’m back in the mood but decided to play BioShock 2 instead for now with the GameClub. I’m still looking forward to RE4 and your enjoyment of it makes me hopeful that I’ll like it as much as I have the first 3 games. Keep me posted on how it goes.

@Th3solution Will do! Also, out of curiosity, have you played the remakes of the first three games? The reason why I ask is because playing RE4 might feel like a step back when compared to RE2 and RE3 remakes. RE4 still retains tank controls from the PS1 games since you can't move while aiming and you need to stand still if you want to turn your character, but it's an over-the-shoulder view so it makes the controls easier to handle. But I still think it might be hard to get used to that after playing the remakes. That's why I don't think RE4 will amaze you as much as it did me since I most recently played the PS1 versions of RE 1-3 and so RE4 feels like a huge step forward compared to those games. That's not to say that you shouldn't give it a go since it's still a great game and the controls are more manageable than the original trilogy's on PS1. But it helps to know what you're getting into when transitioning from modern RE to classic RE.

@LtSarge @Th3solution "RE4" is one of my all time faves - I think it holds my record for multiple purchases across various systems - from the original release on the Gamecube onwards. My personal pick of the bunch would be the Nintendo Wii port - the motion controls and gyro aiming were implemented to perfection. I'm always rather jealous of anyone playing for the first time!

@LtSarge I have played the remakes of the first three, so I know that this might feel like a step backward in some ways. But I also played the original RE1 and RE2 years ago on PS1 so I have some remote familiarity with tank controls. I know they are remaking RE4 as well, but I want to experience the original first.

@LN78 That’s high praise, indeed. Looking forward to it. Not sure when I’ll slot it in the schedule, maybe soon though. I’ll surely drop some impressions when I do.

LN78

@Th3solution If you can wait, maybe we could organise a Game Club playthrough nearer to Halloween - definitely the most appropriate time to play a "Resi" title?

LN78

Th3solution

@LN78 Actually that’s a good point. I do think we did Resi 3 last year and 2 the year prior to that. My backlog is large enough that I’ll have many other options to choose from for my next game, so if the group is likely to play it on October I might keep it on the back burner.

nessisonett

@LN78 @Th3solution Yep, we did Resi 2 and 3 the last couple of years. I thought the rumoured Resi 4 remake would be out by this Halloween but if not, I’d also be well up for replaying the original.
