I'll keep it as brief as possible. I like a few different things including:

  • Classical (Chopin, Mozart)
  • Blues (Leadbelly)
  • Jazz (John Coltrane)
  • 60s music (Hendrix, Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel)
  • Classic Rock (Zeppelin, AC/DC)
  • Hip-hop/Rap (Public Enemy, Saul Williams, Eminem, Blockhead)
  • Electronic/Ambient (Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin)
  • Prog (Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Steven Wilson)
  • World music - mainly from classical Chinese/Japanese instruments but also Indian influences too.
  • Country western (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson)
  • Soundtracks

And I seriously love metal. I mainly like the more industrial/noise stuff like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry or the progressive stuff like Tool, Mastodon, Opeth and Devin Townsend.

Put it this way, there is too much good stuff out there!

@TripleGK: I was thinking about a thread like this myself! We have a favourite 80's music thread on NintendoLife, but not a general music thread like this one. I approve!

Favourite genre is probably rock. Anything from the early rock 'n roll from the 50's to the Beatles or Status Quo with psychedelic rock and AC/DC with hard rock. Synthpop and new wave are also enjoyable from time to time, but also country and traditional pop music. I like stuff from CCR, Bruce Springsteen, early stuff from Bob Dylan and The Police, but also Buddy Holly, 38 Special, The Doors and Simon & Garfunkel. It's all over the place really...

I love music but am always disappointed watching big live events. Wherever that's Ian Brown, Prodigy, Tiesto, U2 or JLS (don't ask). I don't find the atmosphere good at all. I've always found small venues with a great sound system more my scene. My dislike for big events also extends to festivals, Glastonbury is depressing - that's meant to be the best one!!!

I can honestly listen to almost anything. I've always had a slight preference for rock, but I'm not too picky when it comes to music. I guess the only real exceptions I can make are dubstep and some rap.

I grew up listening to some country music (in Illinois of all places), and whatever rock I heard at the time was either from video games or the internet. I thank Gran Turismo 3 for introducing me to more diverse music since it had (on the US soundtrack) guys like Lenny Kravitz, Jimi Hendrix, Muse, Motley Crue, Judas Priest and the like.

@TripleGK: Good old Strapping Young Lad. I know the feeling indeed and therefore think that "aggressive" music is actually very cathartic. Cheers man, it's mainly because I play/played a few instruments so my teachers would introduce me to new things, that I'm a music nerd too (although I don't like everything!). That's fair, I could always get behind Pantera and Nightwish though! I shall give BEAST a try as I do like a bit of J-pop so I imagine it's not too far away in terms of sound.

@Churchy: We share very similar tastes! Have you listened to much MF Doom (or his various alter egos)? Best hip hop out there in my opinion.

There's so much amazing music around the world. Off the top of my head, I'd recommend anyone to listen to these:

Mike Patton- and any band he's been in
Herbie Hancock
Fela Kuti
William Onyeabor
Father John Misty
Jon Hopkins
Animal Collective
Death Vessel
ESG
Nils Frahm
Orkestra Del Sol

I could go on and on!

@Mergatro1d: Awesome to know. Great minds think alike. I haven't heard much MF Doom but what I have heard, I like. I do like alternative hip hop like Aesop Rock and El-P too. And when it comes to instrumental hip-hip you really can't go wrong with Blockhead.

Also, a huge yes on Mike Patton. The man is a total genius. I especially love Faith No More and Tomahawk (along with Mr Bungle, Fantomas and his soundtrack work). I seem to be the only person who likes Anonymous by Tomahawk, I dig the native American influences.

@Churchy: anonymous is one of my favourite albums, love the Native American vibes too. Have you heard Nevermen yet? Not totally sold like I was with peeping Tom but as its patton with dose one (Subtle- another good band!) and that dude from tv on the radio, it's got to be worth a shot.

Feels like we should start a mike patton thread!

@TripleGK: It goes in ebbs and flows with me - sometimes it helps, sometimes I like more chilled out stuff too. Hey, that's cool man. I'm not precious with my tastes and I like to hear things I don't know about just to experience it.

@Mergatro1d: Yes! Thank you! You're the only person who has expressed that. I haven't dug into Nevermen yet but am intrigued by it. Haha, why not? It may just be us two but there's no harm in trying right?! All hail Lord Patton.

A random album recommendation from this year would be Hand.Cannot.Erase by Steven Wilson. It's like modern prog rock and tells the story of a young woman who feels isolated living in the city. It's loosely based on the story of Joyce Carol Oates. It's got a lot of different things in there, from catchy melodies, longer musically fulfilling songs and even bits of industrial and electronic moments too. Check it out!

My first introduction to music as a young teenager was all of the pop-punk stuff - I really got into the old Drive-Thru records bands like The Starting Line and New Found Glory. As I became older my tastes got way more eclectic: The Smiths, The Beatles, The Cure, Daft Punk, Michael Jackson, Prince, Amy Winehouse, Blondie, Texas, Imogen Heap...

I was really into music at high school and was very close to studying music production at university, but I pulled out for a number of reasons - one of which being that I didn't really think I was talented enough to "make" it. Push Square actually was born as a direct result of me finding a "new" hobby.

I fell out of love with music a little bit, but my interest in music production drove me to enjoy straight-up pop music more and more. A lot of people say pop artists are talentless - and in some cases that's true - but I came to appreciate the immense talent and musicianship that goes into creating Top 40 hits, and I like the exploration of different instruments and styles that you find in the charts — I burned out on two guitars, drums, and bass in my teen years.

I listen to a lot of different artists these days, but I find myself falling back on Taylor Swift and Michelle Branch a lot — I really like that "country pop" stuff. I went through a massive K-pop phase at university as well, where I was importing tons of CDs from overseas. The packaging was always super cool!

Woke up to the very sad news that David Bowie has died. Loved so much of his music from the early work to the latest. He could always reinvent himself and adapt to new styles. The news of his death almost brought me to tears this morning that's the first time that has happened in relation to a celebrity.

David Bowie was for me an artist in the truest sense. His music and profile went beyond conventional criticism and praise. I will be forever grateful that I lived in an era where I could experience his body of work.

@mcnoisy I understand your feelings about big venues they often disappoint. More intimate gigs are far better. The best small gig for me was Moby in 2008 he played in strip club which he had rented out minus the strippers. He did a acoustic set with one of his singers.

Worst band I ever saw was Radiohead it felt like they did not even want to be on stage and were just going through the motions. I have enjoyed 2 larger gigs the best of them was Oasis in Manchester just before they split up. Also Blur in Hyde Park 2009. The larger the venue the more the quality of the sound suffers its more about the stage presence of the band.

Only ever seen DJ's at nightclubs most of them were decent and the venue not too big.

JLS never saw that coming we all have skeletons in our cupboards.

It came out of nowhere indeed. I really enjoy his music. It's always sad to see another legend go.

My favorites genres in music are rock and rap, with rap being my favorite of the two as I think the most important thing is music is the lryics. My favorite artist is Eminem (clean versions, as with anyone I listen to with swearing) due his immense lyrical skill and overall brilliance. My second favorite is probably Linkin Park. Their best album's are Hybrid Theory and Metora. Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns were good/alright, but nothing near their first two albums. Livings still wasn't as good, bit still fantastic. When The Hunting Party was released it was the best album since Meteora, and return to form. I recommend it to anyone who misses the old Linkin Park.
Some other artists I like:
Celldweller - he's pretty much electronic rock mixed with dubstep. Definitally the best emotional use of dubstep I've ever seen.
My favorite of his: http://youtu.be/L27O8zPgzxo
Babymetal - My favorite foreign band. They're an all girl metal band, but they don't sing like it's metal though. They sing in a more J-pop way and are completely adorable. Here's a great music visor by them: http://youtu.be/cirhQ8iLdbw
NF - He's a new rapper that I really like. I just got his album "Mansion" and it's great. Another thing I personally really like about him, is that he's a talented rapper that doesn't swear. Here's a really good track from his album: http://youtu.be/V9dIVtoxIyo

@jaz007 I went to see Eminem in 2001 great live act he really puts on a good performance. he has had is ups and downs musically I like his early work and his last two albums are really good. I got Kendrick Lamars To Pimp a Butterfly a few weeks ago that's a great album worth checking out if you are into rap. Also A$AP Rocky last album was good probably better than his first.
