State of Play. Summer Game Fest, Ubisoft Forward. Xbox Game Showcase. All of these events gave us new PS5 game announcements, reveals, and updates — but out of all the titles that we've seen over the last week or so, which one had the best showing? Which upcoming release do you have the highest hopes for?
These are questions we always like to ask after a big gaming event has come and gone, and so we've gathered the Push Square editorial team to share their thoughts. Once you've had a read, we invite you to vote for your own favourites at the bottom of the article.
We'll be putting together a results article for this poll next week, so choose wisely!

There were a few games that stood out to me during the Summer Game festivities, like Perfect Dark, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and even Gears of War: E-Day. But the game that was a bona fide day one purchase for me was DOOM: The Dark Ages. Medieval DOOM sounds like an awesome pitch that gets left on the sidelines for something safer, but iD Software is here with this heavy metal concept, filled with chainsaw shields, skull-crushing guns, and dragons. It sounds like this is going for a more boots-on-the-ground approach than what we saw in DOOM Eternal, but if it can keep that frenetic and gnarly gunplay up, then I’m totally there for it.

Far and away, the standout for me was the reveal of Civilization VII, which I'm probably going to dump a disgusting amount of time into if history repeats itself, all from the convenience of the couch. Virtually nothing is known about the next entry in the venerable series (although a gameplay showcase has been promised for August), but with Firaxis in charge and studio founder / series creator Sid Meier at the helm, we're in just about the safest hands possible. I'm not expecting a re-invention of the wheel, but the technical upgrade will certainly be appreciated. Bring on 2025!

Having felt pretty burnt out on turn-based RPGs earlier this year, Metaphor: ReFantazio appears ready and waiting to rekindle my love for the genre once more. A new Atlus JRPG that flips the Persona formula on its head, it looks to be a genuine Game of the Year contender — at least here on Push Square. The stylised art of the SMT sub-series has been retained, this time coupled with a narrative of political intrigue and shady deals. All of the impressions coming off the Summer Game Fest show floor have been overwhelmingly positive, so I can't wait for another 100+ hour story-focused adventure full of twists and turns. It's also releasing on my birthday, so add another point to the review score.

My pick of the summer gaming extravaganza has to be Metaphor: ReFantazio. Being a maniacal Persona fan I was already hyped for Atlus' next project based on previous showings — but its updates during Summer Game Fest have really just pushed me over the edge. Plus, everyone who actually went to the show and played it (lucky bastards) says it's basically in the running for RPG of the year — and that's some serious praise considering the RPGs that have already launched in 2024. The art direction, the promise of deep RPG elements, that insane battle theme — it's all adding up. I just don't think there's another game like Metaphor on the horizon; it stands out against a sea of upcoming titles that are simply much less interesting, in my humble opinion.

I think I’m going to choose LEGO Horizon Adventures, to be honest. There were others I could have picked: I was dazzled by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and its turn-based battles; obviously Astro Bot is going to be outstanding; I can’t wait to embrace my teenage angst in Life Is Strange: Double Exposure. But no, I’m going to select Guerrilla and Studio Gobo’s toy-based adaptation of Aloy’s world, simply because it looks like such good fun. I was really sceptical of this project when it was rumoured, but all of my concerns melted away when I saw it in motion. Not only does it look beautiful, but it seems to be taking the series in a totally different, light-hearted direction. Six months ago, I’d never have predicted this would even exist, let alone I’d be writing about it for this list, but here we are. It’s great to see Sony targeting a different demographic with this holiday’s lineup – I just hope the titles actually sell.

When I think back over the various shows, there are certainly several highlights I can point to, but nothing made me happier than seeing Astro Bot's debut trailer during State of Play. Amid so many self-serious action games and multiplayer shooters that frankly all blurred together, that little robot's earnest, colourful trailer was a breath of fresh air. The PlayStation character cameos are a lot of fun, Astro's range of power-ups has been expanded, and it looks stunning visually as well. I've also had the pleasure and privilege of playing it early, and it hasn't really left my head since. It's definitely my game of the summer season, and is already gunning for my game of the year, too.
We've had our say, and now it's your turn. Vote for what you think were the best PS5 games in our poll, and then tell us why you've picked them in the comments section below.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looked promising, kinda new, fresh or something.
I also liked Wuchang - not to be confused with Wolong or Wukong - and Metaphor: ReFantazio (which I can't understand the meaning of the name. my bad English).
You missed off the DLC for Starfield. I know it's not been announced as coming to the PS5 just yet, but my bet is that we will be getting it time for the Holiday period later this year. It did certainly look good... 😉
I'm very excited for the upcoming Sea of Thieves DLC content
Actually looking at the list there are a good 5 or so games that I'm looking forward to playing. I'm good with that since work/family take up so much of my time I would only have time to play around 5 games in a year.
Has to be Astro Bots for me overall.
Special mention.
Star Wars outlaws
Assassins creed
Doom
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 . Timed exclusive that's coming to PS5 6 months after Xbox release still, right? Besides that, I was super surprised and excited for more Life is Strange. Black Ops 6 looks like it will be more Cold War, my favorite COD- so I'm excited for that. And then Astro Bot is just gonna be a great game and it shows.
DOOM looks metal as f**k, looking forward to it. Astro Bot looks like good fun too, and then I’ll definitely give Skate a go. Stalker 2 I’m excited for, dunno why it’s not here. And of course Civ VII, one of my favourite series but that’ll be on PC.
Behemoth for me. Great to finally see some gameplay and it was far better than I expected. Plus lots of post SoP roundups with various youtubers and the odd media outlet (Eurogamer).
Aliens looked good as well, fingers crossed for that one.
Quite a few I’m excited for but whittling it down to three:
Astro Bot - If Team Asobi can scale up the level of care, environmental interactivity and DualSense support of Playroom, this could be something really special. My only current concern is that the brilliant trailer might have shown a bit too much!
Flintlock - Ashen is a gem of a game but also feels like more of a foundation than a fully fleshed out experience. Flintlock could be that game and everything I’ve seen thus far is looking excellent.
Silent Hill 2 - The more I see of this, the more excited I get. Bloober Team looks to have the atmosphere nailed down and I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the keys to a stone cold horror masterpiece.
Also, as someone who has only observed the Persona series from the sidelines but never been quite motivated enough to jump in, Metaphor has me very intrigued and might be a good place to give this type of game a go.
I picked dynasty warriors origins because dw9 failed so hard I didn't know if we would actually have another one made
For me it has to be Astro Bot. For all the complaints about the State of Play, it actually worked out well for that game. Imagine if it was announced in a showcase with Ghost of Tsushima 2, Naughty Dog and Santa Monica's new games? It would have got lost in the shuffle, whereas here it became a much bigger deal.
Assassin's Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws. Also Dynasty Warriors but that's just because I'm a big fan.
For me, DOOM The Dark Ages is an automatic highlight for me. Other games of note include Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Flintlock, and hopefully Perfect Dark. If we don’t get Perfect Dark, that will be okay because I own a Series X and will play the game there.
DooM The Dark Ages was absolutely sublime!
Mixtape and Cairn, nothing else.
Astro Bot and also picked Black Myth Wukong and SW Outlaws bc i could pick 3. But Astro Bot is the game im looking forward to the most.
Missing Mixtape in the list, which certainly looked interesting.
Infinity Nikki
@CaptD Yep. Behemoth and Astro for me.
They were the two big games for me in the past few weeks.
Pretty excited for Dragon Age too.
@Shepherd_Tallon
Dragon Age looked far better in gameplay whilst the trailer looked awful, however the jury is still out as I'm not Bioware as we know and love even exists anymore. We shall see.
Also not a fan of all this purple / magenta in games, obviously someone has carried out aesthetic studies but it is getting quite boring now.
Civilisation 7, Doom: The Dark Ages and Phantom Blade Zero and while not featured here, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
But I'm unlikely to buy any of them any time soon.
There wasn't many trailers that surprised me, but id say my top 3 were Astro Bot, Metaphor Re Fantazio and Expedition 33.
Id also like to include the Visions of Mana trailer although it wasn't shown off at any event.
Pity I cant add all 3 of my votes for Astro Bot - the more I see and hear the more this sounds like an easy GOTY
I could only really pick two - Expedition 33 is what I've been wanting for years. A dark, gritty RPG that's turn-based with a non-anime art style. I like an anime art style, but it gets repetitive. That's shaping up to be a day 1 buy for me. Metaphor is looking better and better too. Nothing else caught my interest, and a few were actively repulsive. Dragon Age in particular looks like an outright parody of itself.
Black myth wukong.monster hunter wilds.phantom blade zeo.dragon age the veilguard.assasins creed shadows.metal gear solid delta snake eater.doom.astro bot.metaphor refantazio.silent hill 2.etc.word up son
Where is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?
For me, Astro Bot was the one game this showcase season that just made me really happy to see. I think Sony was insane to say they have no big games this year on the first party line-up and then just toss this one out there. The first one is still authentically the best platformer since Mario Odyssey and I’d put the game in my PS5 top 10 for sure. At this point, even given the new releases in the schedule, it seems Rebirth is certain to be my GotY now, but Astro Bot is the type of game that could knock Balatro from the #2 slot.
Outside that, I’d say that Life is Strange was the big surprise. I was looking for Lost Records, but in its absence, Life is Strange being announced out of the blue was a huge pop for me. I’ve loved most of the Life is Strange games and I know I’ll certainly enjoy the next entry as well. I felt very safe in preordering these two games. I can easily see both games in my top 5 for the year. And honestly, I think a good chunk of my top 10 list from the year will end up being late year releases now, which is very welcome to me, as I’ve struggled to get excited about my gaming for the last two, three months. I’m certainly excited again!
For others, I thought Assassin’s Creed Shadows looked like what I’d want out of the series in 2024. Indiana Jones looks fantastic (not PS, but still…) and I can’t wait for it. Likewise, from the Xbox Showcase, Fable, South of Midnight, Doom, and Expeditions 33 suggest that I’ll finally use my Xbox Series S in excess of 100 hours next year. As someone that bought one at launch, can I say finally? Man, that thing has felt like my son’s Minecraft box too long.
Dragon Ball Sparking Zero realistically might end up being my most played game this year, even if I doubt it’ll be GotY. I just love Dragon Ball and, with Toriyama’s passing, I can’t help but feel the game might hit me more in the nostalgia than I’d like to admit. Black Myth looked wonderful yet again. The Power Rangers and Toxic Crusaders beat-em-ups are very welcome. I’m curious about Phantom Blade Zero, especially in finding out that it’s not a Souls-like and has a fresh style of gameplay, which, man, I need, as I’m burnt out of a lot of current gameplay tropes.
I’m skeptical about Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid Delta, but I want to believe! Man, do I want to have that “I’m playing Metal Gear” feeling again.
I’ll avoid the negativity right now, which I certainly had from the overall season, because I was overall really impressed with a few titles enough to the point where I’ve actually got a release docket I’m excited about now. Just hoping for a surprise from the upcoming Nintendo Direct because July is purchase free at the moment! But yeah, some solid titles announced!
NONE of them I like from the list above. 🙄
But, I like these games from Wholesome Direct 2024 and they will get physical release on PS5. 🤓
Petit Island
Magical Bakery
Garden Witch Life
Albatroz
And those indie games published by SOEDESCO will be released together on 1 November 2024.
Can't wait to play those cute & cozy games on my PS5 machine. 🥰
This is the reason I like Wholesome Direct.
Dragon Age was the big one that stood out for me. Civilisation 7 is obviously up there. Outside of the rest, none really stand out to me, but I'm hopeful that SH2 will be good. That's wishful thinking though.
Honourable mentions to PoE2, a game I've been keeping my eye on for a while, and AC Shadows, which looked better than I thought it would.
Outside of PlayStation, Gears of War, Fable and Perfect Dark all caught my attention.
I hate to say it, but the only game for the PS5 I'll probably be buying this year is Astrobot. Most of the rest I'll just get on GPU.
The MS show was great, was like the good old days of E3. Also most of the games they showed I'm interested in.
Sony and SGF were very meh. Sony really need to step it up and start showing us what's being worked on. Crying out for Wolverine and Ghost of Tsushima 2 details.
@Anti-Matter I'm intrigued, I def will look into them. Look so chilled out.
Not enough love for Slitterhead.
"I think I’m going to choose LEGO Horizon Adventures, to be honest"
Sammy truly is one of a kind 😅
For me Astro Bot is the clear winner, I'm actually very excited to see what else they do with the Dualsense as no other studio has come close to Astro's Playroom despite that being a launch title!
@somnambulance I think Sony said they have no major releases from existing franchises. As per Team Asobi this is ASTRO Bots shot at becoming that major franchise for Playstation. I hope they get that success because the game looks like it's gonna be my goty!
Astro bot stole the show for me the moment he popped up at the end of that stream. The previews have just got me insanely hyped especially that octopus getting punched by Kratos.
Clair Obscura has wormed its way into my brain.
Doom The Dark Ages looks like 2016 more than Eternal which is a very good thing for me. Eternal was too overly mechanical at the cost of fun carnage.
Special mentions:
Star Wars looked good. Same for AC.
Metaphor looks like a day one buy.
Perfect Dark looked like a vertical slice but I hope it is real because I need a deus ex type game in my life.
Phantom Blade 0 looks incredible and same for Black Myth Wukong though the recent Ign piece has dampened that a bit.
While not for me I've seen some very positive buzz for Lego Horizon. It might be the push the franchise needs for some mainstream pop.
@breakneck It’s already a major release to me and many others. This is bigger to me (and my family because my son is going to easily sink a huge amount of hours in this one) than GoW or TLoU or Spider-Man, etc (and most other first party titles, honestly). I wish the game an immense amount of success.
I'm looking forward to Star Wars Outlaws the most. I know it didn't get the best preview according to some 'critics' but I just know that I will love it and that's the only opinion that matters.
Star Wars
Astro
Doom
Great news we are getting Doom, I hope we get Wolfenstein too!!
I think AC showed way better than I thought it would. It's unfortunate that the messaging from Ubisoft has been so mixed. It's disposable because of the online install requirements but it's also incredibly expensive to get the full game. Shrug. Guess I'll be getting it used. Anyway, Doom and Astro are my choices. It was a pretty lackluster showing from Sony imo. I'd say XBOX blew them out of the water, but almost everything XBOX showed was 2025 anyway.
Outlaws, Astro and Behemoth. Yes
Astro
Phantom Blade Zero
Black Myth Wukong
I wish there's 6 options because i also want to pick Lego Horizon, Kunitsu Gami, and Doom
The archetype trailer for the show wasn’t that hype but Metaphor Re Fantazio is my highlight of the year. That release date trailer earlier in the year blew me away.
Monster hunter wilds only 4%? Damn. That was the best game.
There were a number of games that I would say really stood out and surprised me with their trailers. Doom: The Dark Ages for example really stood out as it wasn't what I expected after it leaked, Perfect Dark too after reports of development hell.
I'd have to say that Black Ops 6 had perhaps some of the best Showing - opening a show and then having a Developer Direct show, Whether you play CoD or not, it had a lot of time dedicated to it so arguably the 'best' showing.
Some of the other games on this list had a lot less time - but another that really stood out was WuKong Black Myth but in fairness, most of the UE5 games look impressive, not necessarily games I'd play - especially Souls Like games...
1.Doom! I wanted that pumped straight into my veins.
2. Astro bot also looked amazing
3. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looked fascinating.
Also liked the look of the 3 Chinese action games Black Myth Wukong, Phantom Blade Zero and Wuchang Fallen Feathers as well as many others. Lots to look forward to.
1. Astrobot
2. MGS delta
3. Doom DA
Still skeptic about Sillent Hill 2 but hope it"ll end up reviewing very good
Extremely weak showing from Sony, probably their weakest in memory
Killer Bean is not on the poll because that would have unconditionally won the vote.
Astro Bot, hands down. My excitement for that game is unreal
Hello there fellow gamers.
So I´m picking only three games, then they would be:
Other honorable mentions:
Lot´s of great games all around. And there´s even more games on Xbox to be excited about. In my case, at least.
2024 is already a pretty stacked year and 2025 looks to be no different. Now, if only I could have enough time to finish my backlog...... Oh well.
Cheers and happy gaming everyone
