Debuts don’t get much stronger than Stellar Blade. Korean developer Shift Up – already financially flush from the success of its saucy smartphone gacha NIKKE: Goddess of Victory – has chosen the path of most resistance, turning its hand to AAA territory with this rambunctious action-adventure outing. Despite the inherent risks involved, it’s stuck the landing like an acrobatic anime heroine, backflipping her way between deadly laser beams. That is to say, this is a PS5 console exclusive well worth playing.
You are Eve, a buxom super soldier with an unshakeable resolve. Earth has been inhabited by an extraterrestrial race of Cthulhu-esque aberrations named Naytibas, and it’s up to you and a skeleton crew of allies to bring the fight to the otherworldly invaders. A largely trite story involving artificial intelligence ensues, as the studio navel gazes familiar themes, like what it means to be human. While the narrative never really hits the emotional beats it’s gunning for, largely due to a dreadful English dub, the script does at least commit, and there’s plenty of lore to pore over if you have the patience to read through the hundreds upon hundreds of text logs you’ll uncover over the course of the 20-ish hour campaign.
Combat straddles a middle-ground between Dark Souls and Devil May Cry, and perhaps can be best compared to the likes of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and God of War Ragnarok, where rhythmic parrying plays a pivotal role in the loop. Enemies can be staggered by successfully defending against their assaults, leading to a counter-attacking style that’s much more fulfilling than it may seem at first. While the action is undoubtedly at its best in one-on-one scenarios, an enormous skill tree which slowly fleshes out your combat capabilities keeps things fresh from start to finish, and gives you plenty of tools to see off your antagonists.
Said aggressors adopt sublime monster designs, both artistically and mechanically. Foes take various grotesque forms, and while the gameplay largely sticks to its combat blueprint throughout, you’re constantly being asked to refine your fighting style in order to progress. This is accentuated during the many boss encounters, where you’re forced to think on your feet through multiple phases of battle. While the action can be demanding on its default difficulty, a smartly implemented Story Mode includes assists which aid with timing up defensive counters, providing a helping hand without entirely automating the immensely gratifying act of executing a perfect dodge or parry.
There’s more to the game than cut-throat combat, of course, and the developer has a good grasp of pacing as it slows down the flow of the action when it senses you need a breather. Some light platforming aspects can frustrate due to a lack of precision, but the puzzles are largely enjoyable, and the developer even incorporates a handful of different hacking minigames to keep things feeling fresh. Furthermore, while the vast majority of the campaign subscribes to a wide-linear format – whereby you’re funnelled in one predominant direction but given the opportunity to explore off the beaten path – a couple of larger-scale levels give you the freedom of a small sandbox. There are even some Resident Evil-style shooter segments.
These open world areas are generally small enough to accommodate the limited traversal options in your arsenal, and while they have few meaningful landmarks, they do give the adventure a little space to breathe. Side-quests largely boil down to following waypoints and interacting with quest markers, but the developer always adds context to what you’re doing, even if the vast majority of the sub-plots tend to take dark and depressing turns. Exactly how much you engage with the optional content is up to you, but completing everything can effectively double the overall length of the adventure, and there’s a payoff in terms of alternative endings.
Shift Up does show a lack of experience with the way it handles its post-game, however. While titles like God of War Ragnarok allow you to continue your adventure beyond the credits, regardless of what world-changing events have occurred, there’s a hard point of no return here – and when the title tells you in no uncertain terms to wrap up your business, it really means it, because there’s no going back.
That’s a shame because, despite the bleak state of the Earth, it’s a fun place to run around. An absolutely sublime soundtrack – which effortlessly transitions from k-pop to electronic ambience to all-out hair metal – is one of the defining features of the foray, and it never really loses its lustre even after hours of hearing the same audio on loop. The visual identity is also strong: this isn’t quite a technical tour-de-force, but the art direction is excellent, and its targeted 60fps performance remains relatively robust even in the most intense of moments using Balanced mode.
There’s a fair amount of meat on the game’s bones, too. Eve can unlock all sorts of cosmetic options, from entire outfits through to earrings, and she’s a character you’ll grow an attachment to – even if she is a bit of a beige people pleaser throughout. An obligatory fishing minigame adds some variety to the title’s activities, while collectibles have their own unique reward loops. Some quests conclude with mementos which you can display at your home base, which is a nice touch that adds personality.
Furthermore, as previously alluded to, the gameplay always feels like it’s evolving. It never strays from its counter-attacking underpinning, but as you unlock copious skills, you’ll tap into a more offensive mindset which will make punishing staggered opponents that little bit more exciting. It does mean that starting a new game, with your abilities stripped, can sadly feel like a step backward – but Shift Up has promised that New Game + is coming in a future free update.
Conclusion
Stellar Blade is a slick console debut from a developer clearly on the rise. With an ever-evolving counter-attacking combat system, some superb art direction, and a sensational soundtrack, this is the kind of back-to-basics PS5 outing that fans have been pleading for. A dire English dub and some trite story beats mean the studio still has plenty of room to refine its craft, but Eve’s inaugural outing is largely excellent across the board, and destined to become a firm favourite among PS5 enthusiasts.

@QBGaming12 It's defo much harder than GOW. In terms of difficulty it's easily souls level. There are modes to make it easier and harder though. Try the demo, the director said the game gets much harder, the boss run is easily around soulsbourne level.

I always play a game in its original language wherever possible so the English dub doesn't affect me at all (although annoying for those who prefer dubbed games). I even stuck with Sine Mora's Hungarian.
The last 3 cons you listed make it seem more like a 7/10 for me though. I'll pick it up physically at some point when it's reduced. £45 would be the sweet spot.

It got a lot of 8s but I wonder just how. Much hype and/or nerd thirst played in bumping this up from a 6 or 7, as the negatives seem to be significant enough and a consensus across dozens of reviews. All the discourse surrounding its shameless sexualisation really turned out to be successful marketing.
May wait on this as it's linearity and somewhat basic mechanics often get a bit easy and stale for me. Couple that with the consensus on bland side quests, story, and dialog could really heighten that stale feeling for me. I'm already blessed with a stunning wife, so the digital thirsting has no pull.
The reviews read a lot like a 7. The monster designs seem pretty sweet though, and thank god they offered a short hair option, as that long hair looks janky as hell The latency was super. Noticeable in that demo as well.
It is nice to see an old school like playstation game though, and somewhat surprising debut when you set aside the mysoginy.

I will be honest I had little interest peaking in this game, but since reading this review and now watching the Digital Foundry review its looking very interesting.
A few of us were commenting yesterday around how many games shoot performance and resolution (as well as image clarity) to bits just to include more and more graphical effects or techniques/engines that end up ruining the game - according to DF (and talking in terms of performance/graphics) this game does the almost opposite, using simple stuff and doing it very well in the most part.
I hope this is appropriate but i have tagged in a few of those commenting yesterday as it seems oddly timely.

Honestly I'm a sucker for a good story. But I've yet to play a 'soulslike' thats kept me playing for its story. It's always the very fun and addictive game play that I'll always remember these games for which stellar blade has nailed down. I'm just gonna be impatiently waiting for my copy on friday
@Sondheimist i agree with you broadly but this game had an absolutely MASSIVE marketing push, and maybe im just jaded, or a cynic, but when the marketing is that hardcore it usually means the brass feels like they need to ahead of potential criticism. just saying that its healthy to give ANY marketing the side eye, doubly so when it was this heavy. peace and love

That’s good to hear it keeps things in check and runs well. I find rise of the ronin similar, not great graphically but runs well for me and smooth with good panning no blur at 60fps VRR on.
I think two games that definitely have the best of both worlds at 60fps VRR and very good graphics wise is burning shores HFW and Spider-Man 2. But they are developed by Sony studios teams totally focused on the PS5 and have all the special tricks of PS5 development and big teams doing a fantastic job and shared studio knowledge.
@Kraven The Platinum is pretty awkward to be honest. There are a LOT of missables. You could theoretically do everything in one playthrough, but you'd need a guide.

@QBGaming12 There's a Story Mode which really helps out if you're finding it difficult. It has an optional "assist" feature which will help you time up the parries and dodges (without doing it automatically for you!)

@CastelloGG Pretty much exactly like that yeah. I think it's pretty well done because it's an assist you can still technically "fail" at. So you're still in control, which means you're still rewarded for playing "well" — even if it does make the game easier overall.

Funny you mention Rise of the Ronin - im nearing the point of finishing playing through a game, and have been debating which game to buy next - having read/watched reviews i am now torn between RotR or Stellar blade! Before today i had more or less settled on RotR.

Ronin is very paint by numbers open world more or less, but I enjoy that sometimes and the exploring and open world. The combat seems solid for me and I can lower the difficulty level.
I played the demo of Stella and didn’t click with it overall, it’s probably what Bayonetta 3 should have been. So I won’t purchase and stick with me Ronin for now.
Not sure it’s worth full price, seems derivative of Nier, Bayonetta and Soulslike games

@Rich33 that's laudable if so, I wish more devs and gamers agreed with what we were discussing. That said, this game just doesn't interest me, it never has since announcement. Just another average action game with a main character who's design doesn't interest me in the context of an action game - I'd rather she looked more rugged than a little girl in a dress. Otherwise as I said before, why would I bother when there are so many games that have done this better already?

If the demo was anything to go by, I'd say 8 is about right. Fun to play but story seemed a little off kilter and navigation was a little weird. I also spent some time in demo with movement mechanics and the jumping seemed a little less than intuitive around high objects, which lead to falling in some places you wouldn't expect in a game like this. I'm sure it's still a load of fun but I wasn't expecting a 10 no matter how bad we all wanted to play it. 8 is fine.
@get2sammyb I did read the full review, as well as the pros list, but the list of cons both in the cons box and in the description sound more significant than docking 2 points. Poor questing in an alleged "Action RPG" is....a pretty significant crater in the game's side. Of course the idea that publishers insist on calling every character action game an "action RPG" is also part of that problem, but "not actually an RPG" is also a reasonably damaging con if a game advertises itself as such.
@Rich33 Yeah, the technical aspects and really targeting the hardware sound great. And I imagine it's a fantastic "AA-type" title in that regard, and the technical performance is to be praised. I think I'm alluding more to criticism where @man_what is spot on. It sounds like it's a good, but flawed, maybe second rung game with great technical performance, good core combat, but dodgy elements reflecting less polish than an "8/10" type game should have (quests, acting, smooth controls on platforming etc.) It feels like we're seeing more than ever, the bigger the marketing push, the more the hype there is for a game, the placebo effect hits hard and bolsters everyone's reception of the game to match how much they're "supposed" to like it. And often that shine of new game smell wears off after some time passes and it's viewed in perspective instead of through an expectations filter. I don't think the game seems bad per se, it does some things well, but if it were a multiplatform game, let's say, also day one on Game Pass, with a less....appealing...protagonist, I think this would have been received to much more middling and critical commentary. Fans, aside from critics, had already decided months ago this was this "big" exclusive, even though it always seemed like a middle of the road game. If Uncharted 5 were coming out next week, I think people would be a lot more "meh" about it as well.
I don't mean to be unfair in criticizing it either, it's a critique more on the overall modern points bolstering based on hype and marketing cost in the games world that seems to be accelerating rather than any particular criticism about the game beyond that the reception seems artificially high, while reviews are pretty united in pointing out the problem areas.

Wow. Some of you take these things so personally. It's crazy! Let me put it this way. Ultimately, if you love/hate this game/director or whatever. Just either don't buy it for shell out your cash for it. Some seem genuinely hurt that someone else either likes, or doesn't like, this game that none of them have ever played. HOW?!
Didn't enjoy the demo, looks fantastic but the clunky platforming was painful. The review just about sums it up to be honest. Might pick it up in a few years when it's dirt cheap & it will be.

So an 8 here usually means a 9 for me. Only concern is if the English dub is actually bad or not. I don’t mind subs though. I’m pretty lenient with dubs (with Yakuza being the exclusion) so I’ll give both a try
Regardless, pumped for this! The combat and visuals are what drew me in. If the story isn’t “all-world”/top notch, so be it. I just want to have fun after playing some heavy hitter narratives
Was kinda hoping it'd be received more favorably, but this is what I was expecting since the first trailer.

Now granted, other outlets may have given higher scores exactly because of that.

The video was interesting. As you say they prioritised solid frame rate, as high resolution as each frame rate would allow and polish over visual techniques like ray tracing.
Looks like it's paid off as the video shows solid frame rate in all 3 modes (only if got vrr capable TV for balanced mode)

@lindos Sure, but you can choose not to use something if you don’t agree with its creation. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing precisely because as you say, it’s hard to walk around and find things from only nice people. This should mean that when you have a choice and can make it without an impact to you, you can do it. Doing a little is still better than not doing at all. It’s like saying people who are socialists should live in a cave and not use money, a bit of an absurd requirement.

Yes, imo this is exactly how games should be made and looks far better to me than anything from UE5 at the moment. Set framerate, decent resolution, then add the effects/techniques you have gpu/cpu overhead for. I also found it interesting as DF noted that you have both a locked 60 and a 50-60 mode for VRR users.
There are a few concerns i have about this game (main character - which could easily have been remedied with a similar male option), but graphics/performance is refreshing.
Btw in addition the guy who does the IGN performance reviews is good too (and i think he does his own channel as NXgamer - i may be wrong). I dont frequent ign for anything else, but his performance reviews are usually good (though i havent seen his for this game).

@Rich33 yeah he's great at performance analysis too. I do watch his channel. From time to time and some of his IGN vids. Not seen much from him in a while but don't tend to pay much attention to IGN now (most their presenters irritate the hell out of me)
@Rich33 @rusty82 Yeah I definitely agree that what they did on the technical side is the absolute right approach to graphics. Visually the game is spot on in looks and performance. They built the game to the hardware, and it performs perfectly on the hardware. It's kind of a shame the game that's a technical example to copy happens to be this game that's nothing particularly special (character design drama aside) because that aspect, they really are the example to follow. I suspect it actually has to do with their mobile pedigree, where you really don't have a choice but to design to the hardware rather than expect everyone should just buy a Max.
On the other hand the fact that it's pretty much an on rails "wide linear" design makes it a heck of a lot easier to pull that off than, say, Dragon's Dogma 2, so they get a little bit of a free bonus there. On the other other hand, FFXVI is also mostly wide linear and absolutely chugs under all those shaders and lighting techniques, and is even more or less the same style of game.

Sometimes i wonder if as many games need to be full open world (as opposed to semi / wide linear like this game) - i have mixed feelings - i loved it in hogwarts (where world size was kept down a bit), but other games seem to suffer too much.
@Rich33 Hogwarts, to me, is the ever forgotten happy medium. I think "wide linear" has its place, and it's not a bad thing to have an "on rails" game sometimes, I think that works best for a true "movie game" like Naughty Dog makes, or a pure character action game like this. IMO it harms FFXVI where it needs to be wider, or more to the point, maybe more labyrinthine, and I think it suited the old God of War games better than the new series that feels too confined for what it's trying to do during much of the game. But there's something to be said for content density. Yakuza/LaD is a shining example of a "totally open world" that's very compact, and very dense to the point that spending 7.5 games in the very same, tiny open world map never actually feels small. Creating that illusion of an "open world" while actually being miniaturized is an important attribute devs have forgotten in the quest to make everything "bigger" and "to scale" to the point every fantasy game is approaching Flight SImulator levels of scale where you put it on autopilot and walk away for 12-14 hours while you cruise in real time to the destination....
In the real world you could walk from one end to the other of Manhattan in less time than it takes to reach a lot of video game open world destination markers. And you'd have 3000x the amount of things to do in between. Spider man can swing across the thing in minutes, and there's nothing but a few armed robberies in the way. Nobody even tried to haggle to wash his windows. That really breaks the immersion.

I was curious so I googled his name plus some keywords like "controversy" or "accusation" and found nothing egregious, certainly nothing that would make him an "abysmal human being", but I did find there is someone with the same name who was accused of sexual assault.
Glad it scores high. Another high mark for PS exclusive. But it's cons are similar to rise of the ronin which only scores 6 by you. Why?

Dont know about GOWR - I tend to think of that as an ideal example of where you dont need a huge open world, but it does include some larger content dense areas mostly used for side content. The approach seems to help general pacing, plus all the various discussions between the companions (even if it was atreus talking to himself!), not to mention 80fps average in a fantastic looking game - but then i really liked the games.
Hogwarts on the other hand needed an open world, but they kept their ambition in check (and i loved it).
In terms of stellar blade, from what i have seen, i think they did right by not giving in to include an open world which would probably come with a lot of sacrifices.
@Rich33 Definitely stellar blade should be as is on rails. It's going for that Platinum Games style, and while it's otherwise trying to ape Automata in every way, Automata is kind of unique with a Platinum action format but an open RPG design. Of course it's really Taro's game.
Gowr definitely don't think should have been open world, but it lives too much in its PS2 corridor roots for its own good sometimes. It worked for the old games because gameplay is fast, fast, fast and doesn't let up, but I think too often they forgot the "wide" part of "wide linear" lol
@NeonPizza TBH my impression of the music was "wow, they're really doing the whole Nier Automata thing, huh?" Lol. Which isn't a bad thing but there's enough derivative that it's a little too obvious how strong an influence it is. Right down to vending machine save points.
I do like the music, and I happen to like k Pop, at least the old stuff before it just became American produced rap, but they just seemed to be adding a kpop twist to the whole ambiance of automata. Which was already a hint of jpop plus atmospheric weirdness.
Aside, as a vr fan, if you haven't tried Tiger Blade and want to see Korean flair done right in a video game, you really must try it. Yeah it's all k-rap and I hate rap, but somehow it just works perfectly for the visceral gameplay and you feel like a gangster lol. Tiger Blade is better gameplay (if exhausting) and feel. No pop princess protagonist, but it's got a cute tiger cub. Cute tiger beats cute pop princess.
Funny thing about the characters is I think the teammate that guides you in the beginning has a more memorable face than Eve. Eve is painfully generic. I couldn't pick her out of a lineup.
I think some of the complaining is the jealous loser types and some is just an eye roll at the obvious commercial soft porn sale. Eves introduction, I mean, really ....
Still better than the "oh we replaced our real face model with a male model hybrid" treatment poor alloy got.
I'm not the biggest proponent of ffxvis 30fps at best gameplay but I have to say, playing this while in the middle of xvi this did feel awkward and latent. You can see where flaws aside, the combat director for xvi has the experience from dmc to know the little tricks that work.
Lol that "money shot" is kinda cringe on a Duke nukem scale that screams "please don't let anyone know I'm actually playing this ". Lol
They really should have had a male/female character choice (others have done fully voiced alternatives).
1. Some people (including myself) just find better immersion from a character who is the same gender as themselves. This is a new character and not one from media after all.
2. I really think that if the male character was of a similar age / physique / style etc it may have dulled down some of the negative press.
But then "contoversy creates cash" to coin a phrase.
@lindos Gaming is a luxury, not a necessity. If someone doesn't want to support a game then they don't have to.
It's not the end of the world if someone chooses to boycott a videogame.

If it was for the reviews I wouldn't never played Tormented Souls or Alone in the Dark, and both are great in their way. Not every game needs Sony studio quality.

To be fair I think the character is probably verging on the threshold of good taste imo (and probably doesnt do the games industry any real favours), but not to the point of lowering review scores for, and as we and others have said its clear that there was a publicity choice here. I will note I have not seen what outfits are available apart from those in the demo areas / included in reviews/trailers.
That said I can see how a female might find the overtly sexualised lead character to be somewhat distasteful, particularly as it has been used as a selling/publicity point, and there is no similar male alternative. Im not female, so i dont know.
Now, if the game were also to have the choice of a male lead of similar age/style then this becomes more of a design choice across both genders, as opposed to an obvious attempt to garner publicity.
Imo and only from what ive seen, I think some may be going too far with the outrage on this one, but people have different opinions.
That said, for some (including myself) a wholly unrelateable main character can be a very negative point - whatever reason has caused that "unrelateability".
I will note that i enjoyed the demo, and it didnt put me off.

Don’t really get the complaint about the English dub. Seems fine to me. Much better than many JRPG dubs.
@NeonPizza don’t forget the original GoW games. the original kratos was an amazing fantasy/fictional character that modern society ruined because he wasn’t “relatable” & “unlikeable” and was such a caricature. i wouldn’t shift the blame mostly on my generation considering it’s mostly people in their late mid/late 30s saying those kinds of things

@AfroMario I don’t understand the whole “I need to relate to the character” thing. Like, I’m a 42-year-old Black guy who works in finance. I don’t need a game character to be any of those things. I don’t even need the character to be male. I mean, when I get a chance to make a character it’s often an Orc (If it’s a choice) or a female if the choices are only human.
People are too tied up in identity nowadays and that’s what leads to this. Most of the arguments I’ve seen about Stellar Blade is either people mad she’s near-nude. Or people praising that she is. Both are really weird arguments. Like, if you don’t like that she’s near-nude then don’t play. And if you’re exicited about it then you have more serious issues than just covered up game characters.

Looking at it, might be when I turned colour blind mode on for my stupid eyes (was struggling to tell the difference between Blink and Repulse), but 10 hours of progress gone 😩

@Stonecold you do need to parry or dodge and I’m one that’s not great in games where you need to parry a lot. However I just mostly use the dodge button (circle) and have had a blast playing it fine.
There are upgrades to make both of these easier too.
Having said that I realise your comment is old so no doubt you’ve already played it and found out yourself by now!
