Let’s not beat around the bush: Shadow the Hedgehog was definitively uncool when he debuted on PS2 back in 2005. But time is a flat circle, and public opinion on the character has completely transformed in recent years. He’s now very well-liked, and will even be voiced by Keanu Reeves in Paramount’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie.
Sonic X Shadow Generations is part remaster, part sequel – as it bundles together an upgraded version of 2011’s PS3 game, with an all-new adventure starring the black blur. This gameplay footage features a boss battle against a Biolizard, as well as some Space Colony gameplay. In it, we get a glimpse of Shadow’s Chaos Control, which allows him to temporarily freeze time while he inflicts mass damage.
Honestly, this is all looking really slick from where we’re sitting. The level design looks extremely strong, and the combat on point. It’s been fun to witness Sonic’s redemption arc these past few years, as the movies have attracted strong reviews and the games have gradually improved. While the open world Sonic Frontiers wasn’t perfect, we liked it, and this looks like another must-play so far.

That game is great. I want a Sonic Frontiers 2 with a new hedgehog inspired by Gohan, Shazam/Billy Batson and the Flash.
Was he uncool? People adored him in Sonic Adventures 2 and while his own game wasn't good it did sell really well and was pretty popular. Shadow has always been loved right from the start.
Yeah I don’t get what the article is going for here, Shadow was always loved (as he should be!)
@scottdevine48 I want unleashed 2, but we cant have what we want. we get a glorified DLC for a 13 year old game instead.
I didn't realise this is coming to PS4 too. Thanks for the heads up!
Woah there! Shadow has always been cool. The only reason he went away for so long is because Sega just didn't know what to do with him for a while unfortunately after his stand alone game was received so poorly.
But as a kid I remember seeing him on the Adventure 2 cover and instantly thinking "Wow, who's that guy? He looks super cool!"😄
While Shadow The Hedgehog flopped as a game, having an almost anti-Sonic went down relatively well with the fans. But it probably helps that Sega has used him mostly sparingly. Regarding his place in the universe, around the time the game came out, there was a changing of the guard in the comics, with very popular writer Ian Flynn coming in and treating the character with respect. All of this has contributed to Sega not dropping the ball on this character at least.
@DennisReynolds Shadow's game was popular, but that doesn't mean it was liked. About the only thing people liked about the Shadow the Hedgehog game was laughing at it because of how over the top and edgy it was. Shadow as a character was praised when he debuted in Adventure 2, but since then, many have grown to dislike Shadow. Some people even look back at his introduction in Sonic Adventure 2 and consider it to be where the Sonic franchise started going downhill.
It look pretty cool sonic x generations trailer looking good.word up son
Looks legit? What does that even mean? That it looks genuine, real?
@Toot1st it’s short for “legitimate” , dude . lol
Umm you do know Shadow is from Sonic Adventure 2 right, not Shadow 05??? And people liked him in Sa2, yea???
@Telepole506 I dunno the Shadow game was pretty well liked among kids and young teens. Sonic Adventures 2 is one of the best entries and is well liked.
@Telepole506 "Some people" Literally.. who? Comments on Youtube, I presume? Because I have never, EVER hear people say the downfall of Sonic started with Adventure 2. If anything, people claim it happend with Heroes or 06
(Actual truth answer is with Lost World though).
How old is the person that wrote this article? Shadow the hedgehog has been a fan favorite character since he was first shown off in sonic adventure two on the Dreamcast. He was never seen as uncool. This has to be one of the dumbest things, that isn’t Star Wars related, that I have recently read of anyone trying to make a definitive opinion about a franchise they clearly don’t know anything about it.
"Let’s not beat around the bush: Shadow the Hedgehog was definitively uncool when he debuted on PS2 back in 2005."
Me when I'm a big fat liar.
The title is definitely legit. I found out the hard way when I googled it.
@Telepole506 not the majority of people who matter
Really looking forward to this. And yes agree with most comments on here shadow was always badass. SA2 was amazing especially playing it as a kid
@Maubari In terms of bad games, it started with Spinball and 3D Blast. I think the 3D games range from middling to terrible, with a heavy slant towards the latter. But Sonic has never been more popular, so whatevs.
@LikelySatan Yeah, that's what most people say. Thank goodness I usually think the opposite what people think.. I think it's hilarious how people say Lost World and Forces are ''not that bad'' when they definitely are. And FAR worse than even Sonic 06 too.. aside from some minor glitches and perhaps an unneccesary dumb plot , that game is not that bad.
@Maubari Yeah that is definitely fortunate for you, haha. I'd like to still enjoy Sonic, but so much of it is embarrassing or just feels like trash to play. I wish his friends would just stop talking or go away, and that they'd go back to music that doesn't make me want to stab my ear drums in protest (the Genesis OSTs are legendary, Crush 40 etc is not for me)...those kinds of things.
I was a Genesis kid. I always say the NES was what made me love games but the Genesis made me obsess over them. My point is that I've been playing Sonic games, as they release, from the beginning, and I used to be a fan. Sonic changed and I did.
That said, are we going to start doing the revisionist thing with Sonic 06 now? Is that what the world needs, lol? It's hard to even parse the quality between releases because they keep going back to the drawing board. The biggest problem is the games never get the time to cook, and SEGA is saying that the releases are going to start coming a lot more frequently. Yeah no thanks.
@LikelySatan Haha I understand that though; 06 is.. kind of weird in a way. It has alot of great playable characters, a fantastic soundtrack, empty but kind of fun open world to explore.. But then there are the glitches, horrible story and loading times to contend with. However - I still vastly prefer this over almost any modern Sonic game after Generations, where it's JUST Sonic playable and has some of the worst writing i've seen in gaming, even more so than 06 (Lost World, Boom, Forces, Superstars..) and it didn't get better until they fired these two buffoons that wrote all of the ''stories'' starting with Colors. Ironically, writers should become BETTER with time.. These two (Pontac and Graff I believe their names are) became far, far worse.. which is the reason I almost left the franchise too. However, with Frontiers we've entered a brave new world with the Sonic comic writer (Ian Flynn) now entering the fray. Here's hoping all will go well from here.. but one more massive mistake (Like Forces), and I think i'll exit the franchise too.. permantely.
Will still enjoy the older titles, obviously!
@LikelySatan have you not played any sonic game since the adventure era ones? lol they haven’t used crush 40 in a major game since like 2009(unleashed didn’t have them either)
And the cast was basically sidelined for like 15 years after 06 ,they never had any major roles.
Sonic colors in particular would probably be your taste since it’s just Sonic but to me that’s boring when many other characters are more interesting.

@nomither6 @Toot1st And legitimate means 'genuine' or 'real'.
@LikelySatan No disrespect, but it’s just seems like you’re not open to the series doing anything different that wasn’t exactly how it was in the early 90’s…
Like to not like ANY of the music beyond the genesis era? Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 osts rank pretty highly among the general gaming public not just sonic fans, and they’ve done tons of different stuff like with unleashed musically.
Sonic and Characters like Ratchet and Sly Cooper talking was just a natural result of gaming evolving. I don’t see why bugs bunny and TMNT can speak but not sonic lol
@Shad361 Because he sounds idiotic. His friends more so. Freedom Planet has some embarrassing VO as well, so Sonic is even inspiring them there.
The problem with saying I'm stuck on the old design is that I love a whole lot of 3D platformers. Plenty of the old guard 2D games found a way to break into 3D without resorting to lock on/QTE slop that plays itself. Not my job to tell them how to figure that out.
Anyway I'll stop. I'm frustrated with the series, but it's not like I'm missing out anyway. There's plenty to play elsewhere.
@nomither6 i get that but it make sense in the context, this sonic game looks real? did people think it was fake?
@__jamiie i know but why is it used in this context? did people think this game wasnt real?
@Toot1st I was on your side dude. I was pointing out the same thing by saying that the word legitimate was wrongly used.
@Toot1st it’s just slang lingo. it’s used that way to describe how authentically cool something is
