Publisher 2K will reveal the next entry in one of its "biggest and most beloved franchises" tomorrow at Summer Game Fest, and according to a member of the Exputer forum — who has shared correct leaks in the past — that game will be Borderlands 4. No other details, such as a release date, have been shared, but since Geoff Keighley has said the show will focus on games releasing in the fairly near future, a launch within the next 18 months seems likely.
With the movie adaptation now just two months away (out on 9th August 2024), it makes sense for Gearbox to have a new video game entry it can point to once fans and newcomers have seen the film. Other contenders for the reveal were BioShock, Mafia, and Civilization, but it appears those fanbases will need to wait longer for their big moment. A silver lining for BioShock and Mafia fans, at least, is that new entries in both those franchises are already confirmed to be in development. It's simply a case of when — not if — we see them.
Alongside the 2K announcement, titles such as Metaphor: ReFantazio and Slitterhead are confirmed to be at the show. I'm happy with this if true.
Civ was also confirmed to be in development not long after midnight suns came out, so it could make an appearance, we've certainly been waiting long enough, longest wait for any in the series never more than 7 years previously.
That’d be disappointment for me if true. Was really hoping for Bioshock and can’t stand Borderlands. Whatever though.
Killer Six (borderlands youtuber) speculated that BL4 will come at the same time as the movie, based on how long it has been between launches. Also it makes sense like how TLOU rereremaster came out along side the tv show.
That's totally understandable and still cool, but I was kind of hoping that this would be Mafia 4. Still though, the Borderlands are some of my go-to co-op games, so I can't really complain about another one coming soon!
I’m disappointed, was hoping for mafia 4
I was mostly hoping for Bioshock. I didn't expect Mafia yet since that team only just finished up Top Spin not too long ago. As for it being Borderlands, I like Borderlands well enough but I definitely would have been most excited for Bioshock's long awaited return.
Might end up playing it with the sound muted, skipping cinematics? If the gameplay is still good.
Obviously getting it in about two years, when the complete game is out and < half price.
At this point in time the franchise is dead to me. I can't even imagine how much MORE woke Randy Pitchford is going to make the series going forward. Blackrock money let's go!
Really looking forward to this. Love the Borderlands franchise. Would be great if we could get a port of Borderlands 2 or any other Borderlands game to PSVR2 as well.
I’m sure I’ll pick up Borderlands 4 at some point but those games are all so …..’same-y’ it’s hard to get excited for them anymore. And Borderlands 3 was thematically bland, uninspired garbage and generally forgettable so I’m not overly encouraged for this next outing. Although Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was pretty good. We shall see. I just don’t think the series has been all that ‘great’ since Borderlands 1 & 2 and that was how many years ago?
I had a feeling it would be. Was hoping for literally ant other game. Enjoyed Borderlands 1 but played 2 and 3 woth friends and just couldn't get back into it
Oh yeah. I love borderland. Can’t wait for the teaser/trailer
@DETfaninATL I feel exactly the same way. In the year of our lord 2024, I just think the Looter Shooter subgenre has been played out. Combing through a ton of procedurally generated gray (common) and green (uncommon) guns, getting excited for a millisecond to find a blue (rare) gun only to find it's something that's worse than what you have, is really dull.
The writing amd co-op is what saves it, but I'm hoping all the time developing has been time spent programming unique weapons. Imo, the only saving grace of Borderland 4 will be if there's less procedural generation
Enough with Borderlands, where is BioShock?
New Bioshock, Borderlands, and Mafia? How about doing like Bethesda did at E3 2015 with Fallout 4 and announce hard release dates in 5 months for this coming November. Would make 2025 a special year for me and I will finally upgrade from my 7 year old PRO.
Excited to see what the classes are. I usually go for the class that has a support character with it.
Gaige from Borderlands 2 is still the best character in my opinion, along with Deathtrap lol.
@QBGaming12 i felt like i was cheating while using deathtrap. love it.
Blergh, I despise everything about Borderlands (aside from the cel shading) so I couldn't be more disappointed.
I'm not expecting BioShock 4 to be especially good either for a smattering of reasons, but at least I'm curious as a huge fan of the Rapture duology (Infinite and especially Burial At Sea can burn in a dumpster fire, where they belong).
I’m not opposed to this, but BL3 did not live up to the expectations I had after BL2. I dunno why though… it just felt like a massively imbalanced game. BL2 I can progress fine, but BL3 I keep getting downed.
@rustyduck true lol. Depending on how you level him up he basically becomes a one man killing machine in the game no matter what, that can either deal a ton of damage or deal damage/help you.
I know I’m in the minority but I’ve always hated these games. The humour is cringe and the shooting mechanics just feel “off”. Then there’s the endless bullet sponge enemies with boring battles that just go on and on…
I bounced off Borderlands (and Tiny Tina). The loot just becomes noise. The combat engine is fun, but then becomes samey and dull
@AfroMario I loved 3 but I know 4 will be a train wreck for all this modern madness lately. Oh well, as long as the gameplay is still as amazing, I'll just skip all the story and play with a podcast or music in the background.
