At this point we all know that Capcom is capable of creating incredible action games. In fact, based on recent experiences, it's undoubtedly one of the best in the business. And so this raises the question: why do people seem to be sleeping on Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess? Set to release just a month from now on the 19th July, it feels like this brand new IP from the legendary developer is slipping under the radar.
Okay, so it's not Monster Hunter or Devil May Cry or Dragon's Dogma, but it is Capcom — and impressions from a playable demo at Summer Game Fest have actually been really positive. Some are calling Kunitsu-Gami one of the best titles they played at Geoff Keighley's event, which is some serious praise. Others are simply convinced that Capcom has another banger on its hands.
We've gathered up a bunch of these previews below, including our own, which we published earlier this week.
Push Square
"Capcom's been doing such a brilliant job with its long-established franchises, but it's refreshing to see the publisher take a gamble on some brand new ideas, too. One such example is Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, something we've been intrigued by since its debut trailer last year. After getting some hands-on time with it, we can now say that its unusual blend of strategy and action works, and has a lot of potential."
Digital Trends
"While Monster Hunter Wilds might not be getting released until next year, Capcom still has another awesome-looking game releasing very soon. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess impressed me with its Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer, and after going hands-on with the game, I’m even more in love."
Inverse
"After playing Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, it’s suddenly become one of my most anticipated games of the year: a fascinating fusion of tower defense game with a twist — wholly unlike anything you’ve ever seen from Capcom. It’s a sleeper hit in the making."
TechRadar
"Our experience suggests that Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, with its mix of action, tower defense and real-time strategy elements, could potentially become one of Capcom’s next big franchises."
Windows Central
"When I showed up to the Capcom building at Summer Game Fest Play Days, my eyes were immediately drawn to the line of gaming stations set up for Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. I've been intensely interested in the game since the moment I first saw it, and I couldn't wait to play. When I went hands-on, I played for nearly an hour straight — until the staff told me I had run out of time and I realized I spent my entire demo period on a single game."

I think it looks fantastic, but I worry I would suck badly at it. Would love to give a demo a try if they ever release one
It will be on gamepass day one, so I'm wide awake.
Is this the one with added tower-defence?
Indeed we are. This is a super unfortunate release window as it’s in the midst of everyone’s attention being directed towards the, err, Directed from a few days ago and the Xbox show. Not to mention the upcoming gamescom and whatever Sony might be cooking. I’m not sure how many comments will be posted here so I’ll chime in with my two cents to give this some engagement as this game deserves a chance. (But, I’ll be blunt. I’m so sleep deprived, I can’t stop thinking about the tekken character of a similar name and the Okami Capcom game…)
This looks like my vibe. I’ll give it a peek, thanks for not letting it get buried, PS. Totally almost missed it with everything going on.
I was actually intrigued by this game just from the art direction alone. So I'll be getting it next month.
Can we be sleeping on something that the publisher hasn't really effectively marketed?
I've always thought this game looked interesting, but they've done a terrible job communicating what it even is. I had no idea it has strategy elements until this round of previews. Capcom has just sort dropped little trailers alongside other large announcements, like they assumed it would be a failure.
@RudeAnimat0r this is my thought as well. Capcom has barely marketed this game. Heck they even threw it day one on GP. They don't seem to have much confidence in it
We? Well I'm not sleeping on this game because it caught my eyes the first time Capcom showed the trailer. I thought this game feels like Okami had a baby with Onimusha. It looks unique and i would give it a try.
But so far there's no news about physical release...
Capcom is doing well. But, i really have no interest in this. Just not for me.
It looks very nice but gameplay wise it's not something I'm looking for. I hope it does well though. We need more unique games like this, just a shame it's not one I'm personally interested in.
Not me ser, I liked this the moment I saw it. Have been following it
it's a weird looking game which might fly under the radar. a bit baffling that capcom is willing to take a financial hit on something (non-mainstream) like this and at the same time, ignore the breath of fire series as long as it has.
Maybe they are not paying them influencers and news portals enough money?
"We"? Sounds like a herd lol.
When everyone was losing their sh*t because MS had atlus games in their showcase I (and many others I'm sure) was only thinking about this game and how it looked more interesting than the atlus games lol.
We? Don’t drag me in in this 😤
Not for me, just looks bland and boring from a gameplay perspective and more of an indie level game which is rare from capcom.
Looks pretty and it looks like it might have a pause combat function to issue commands? Hard to tell from the short trailer. I'm definitely interested it just depends on how grindy they make it. I'm very anti-grind these days.
Nope, I'm not sleeping on it. Just genuinely not interested and I've seen enough to know that.
Hack and strategy
Capcom don’t even want to put out a physical release for it, even in Asia so I’ll pass. I’m all over that Miles Edgeworth and Marvel Vs Capcom collection though.
I think it looks and sounds cool but I hate tower defense games which unfortunately means I’ll be passing on this
I’ll always try a Capcom game. Even if it doesn’t draw me in from a trailer, I mean, it’s Capcom.
@Porco Capcom Super Election survey results has BoF 3 in the top 10 of games that people like the most. I don't think Capcom gonna ignore the series anymore. At least we probably get an HD collection like Ace Attorney and Mega Man.
Maybe heard of it but barely know anything about it. Hope it does well not really fussed.
To me it seems like Onimusha but not the same problems Exorpimal has, something else then what people want and also better design of the past too likely.
They can try new but want to without the good attributes and those licenses or expectations why do they waste players time?
Too many blend together, it doesn't have the same exciting appeal of other niche Capcom IPs and I barely care for their big IPs. Tried a few and they are ok not really my thing.
Lol, whose "we?" I'm not sleeping on it! I've been excited for it since the original teaser. Looks weird AF, which is definitely a plus to me.
What did the hipster say when he burned his mouth on the pizza?
"I ate it before it was cool."
I've liked the look of this since it was originally announced. Glad that it's looking like fulfilling its potential.
Only downside for me is that the game seems to be "digital only". Would love to have this piece of art on a physical disc.
No disc, no buy (exceptions for <$10). Bummer. I remember having my interest piqued the first time I saw it, but I completely forgot about it.
Definitely playing on GamePass, Hoping for a great time.
Apart from a couple of blips (the Resi 5, 6 and Resi bastardisation era), Capcom have always been a top tier developer and have consistently been making great games for as long as I can remember. From when I was a child, the made great NES games like Mega Man and Disney games, SNES area we had Street Fighter games, PSO Resi, Dino Crisis, PS2/Gamecube there was Resi Remake, Resi 4, Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry, Killer 7, Okami etc, PS3 X360 was not their best time, but PS4 onwards they have released consistently great games. They are easily one of the best game developers of all time.
@PuppetMaster i noticed that as well. the poll results may give the franchise some life. i'm not interested in remasters of the old games as they emulate perfectly well but i understand that is the likely route things will go in before a proper sequel is or isn't greenlit based on sales and interest etc. however, it is also possible that a breath of fire legacy collection could go on to sell poorly and the franchise never gets proper sequel or reboot that it deserves. i was surprised that capcom released the onimusha remaster and didn't bother to remaster the rest of the series. were the sales so poor that they couldn't justify it? who knows... but if there is a genre in capcom's slate that is missing, it is certainly a good old fashioned turn-based jrpg. i feel like they have gone above and beyond anyone's expectations as far as their financial success over the past 10 years, so it is time they took a few "risks" and stopped playing it so safe with the sequels and remakes (kumitsi-gami being the only exception i can think of).
@PuppetMaster I thought "Yoshimitsu-Okami" haha
I somehow love everything about this game!
@IntrepidWombat wait, did they actually say it would definetly not release on disc? Let's spam their in-boxes!
@PerpetualBoredom Xbox wire reported it, and there's nowhere to order a physical copy despite the game releasing in less than a month. I think it's a safe bet.
@Porco An HD collection not just to test the water but it also allows more gamers to try these games on current hardware with some QoL feature like saving everywhere, faster combat, and multiple options for graphic. I mean, officially BoF I & II are still stuck at SNES & GBA, BoF III & IV stuck at PS1 and PS3/Vita store, and BoF V stuck at PS2.
Onimusha 1 remaster probably doesn't sold well since they spent a good chunk of money to hired Takeshi Kaneshiro as well composed a new music. For Onimusha 2 and 3, they must pay the license again for Yusaku Matsuda, Jean Reno, and Takeshi Kaneshiro. So...2 & 3 probably stuck forever for PS2 and PC.
They made three new IP's: Exoprimal (it seems a flop?), Kunitsu-Gami, and Pragmata. We'll see how Kunitsu-Gami and Pragmata gonna sell when they release. If it's doing well, i can see Capcom spend more money for new IP's.
@PerpetualBoredom You mean Yoshimitsu from Tekken / Soul Calibur? Yeah i can see some mask design looks like Yoshimitsu helmet and they're dancing too just like Yoshimitsu lol.
RTS and tower defense has me interested.
@IntrepidWombat Gosh darn it!!!!
And 50€ for the game, definetly wait for a heavy bargain then.
@PuppetMaster yeah, if him and Okami had a love child it would be Kunitsu-Gami!
Is it a digital only release? I have to be honest I have not heard about it maybe they can do a LRG of they can't afford to put out a physical copy. Digital games are games we're I will never pay full price or most of the time i won't even bother because I forget about them. And then they release in a physical form. Don't do it like Alan Wake 2 were you €200 for a bunch of stuff and include vouchers for the DLC what a failure. 😂
@PerpetualBoredom If you see how many games get a physical release way down the line then it's not a bad idea to wait. I there is no physical release you can buy it for cheaper and patched.
