PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S: Which Is More Powerful?
On paper, it looks like Xbox Series X is technically the more impressive next-gen console. However, looking at all the facts and figures, PS5 and Xbox Series X will be extremely similar on a technical level. The Xbox Series S is less powerful. All three have high-speed SSDs, and you can learn more about why the PS5's storage solution is particularly impactful through the link: PS5 SSD: Why It's Better Than HDD. It's worth mentioning that the PS5 does have a little less storage space (See Also: PS5 SSD: How Much Storage Space Does It Have?) but it looks like Sony will offer more flexibility in terms of expandability. You can find more information on that, through here: Which SSD Drives Will Be Compatible with PS5?
In terms of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, both have eight-core processors running neck and neck, and both will make use of ray tracing (See Also: PS5 Ray Tracing: What Is It?). Both devices are also capable of playing 4K UHD Blu-ray movies (See Also: PS5 and 4K UHD Blu-rays: Can PlayStation 5 Play Them?), but it's worth remembering that the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S don't support physical media. For more information: PS5 Digital Edition vs PS5: What's the Difference?
If we're to pick a winner based on the above, it would appear Microsoft has a marginal edge over Sony with the Xbox Series X, but it looks as though PS5's SSD is outrageously fast, significantly more so than even the Series X. It's a close run race, in other words. If you choose the PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can be sure it'll be substantially more powerful than the current-gen machines, as confirmed by the following comparison: PS5 vs PS4: Full Tech Specs Comparison.

for the first time as spec the xbox beat the PS with launch devices.
First coronavirus and now this.
Oooh, we've not had a good console war for a whole generation.
@BAMozzy
I/O Throughput 5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed) 2.4 GB/s (Raw), 4.8 GB/s (Compressed, with custom hardware decompression block)
What does this mean bro? Seems the ps4 has a higher amount. But is that a good thing here?
You say the CPU is neck and neck but the Xbox's is clocked higher even with hyperthreading turned on, the GPU performance is up in the air and the Xbox has a very impressive Minecraft demo for ray tracing. PS5 has a faster SSD but you lose all of that with expanding memory. Not a great showing for me overall and I wish we had more real information about backwards compatibility and how its handled and of course what the thing looks like
he tries to make the sound is a big deal. and much bigger than visuals in games, for god sake make him stop speaking.
Jesus man, Architecture it was. Better luck next time.
Sounds like the Original Xbox Vs the PS2 again.
i am deaf i don't want 3D Sound. visuals please you waste the money on dedicated chip for sound
@HellOfaHunter the original xbox was way more powerful than the ps2?
@HammerKirby3 i don't remember a sony get beaten by microsoft in launch devices.
This and the fact that some PS games might go PC is making my decision to go PC next generation unless it has backwards compatibility with all previous consoles
@GKO900 it's a legacy backward comparability which means you may not experience a better performance in ps4 titles when you run it on ps5 locked to 30 fps.
@GKO900 Same, at any given time I have enough of a Steam backlog that waiting a few years for PS exclusives to come to PC is palatable. Not a good look for PS5 at the moment.
@HellOfaHunter maybe there's a hope for 3D sound to provide SOME kind of novelty common people can still notice by themselves, without needing third party tourguides like Digital Foundry to lecture them on the intended wows?
As someone with a really nice surround sound setup, not happy with their solution to 3D audio.
I get it...but...I would rather have Atmos and DTS:X support at least they actually USE my speakers.
Not happy with backwards compatibility either. Microsoft is ahead of the game there.
The fact he didn't really touch much on ray traced capabilities is a little...disheartening - if he did, I must have already tuned out.
I will say, Microsoft wins in the messaging department right now.
Way too much focus on the SSD in his deep dive. We get it, it's fast and the possibilities regarding game world size is great, but man...way too much detail.
My hype actually decreased with the deep dive. Will have to wait and see how this all comes together in practice.
@nhSnork what ever he make with the sound it won't be noticeable like visuals.
PS5 for me I know the games will always look better.
@nhSnork
Play Hellblade with 3D supported headphones. Now imagine that on your surround sound system. Hardly a novelty. Home theater systems have thrived over the years for a reason.
@GamingFan4Lyf it goes way beyond what ATMOS can do did you listen to what he said?
In the end it's all about games, I rather buy console with god of war 2, horizon zd 2, ND games, and persona games rather than console without (exclusives) games but can zoom 300% to see some texture is better
i mean most of this stuff gamers won't even notice while playing.
also one x is more powerfull than the pro but that does not affect us PS gamers in a bad way does it?
this is all internal stuff that you can boast about but at the end of the day less or more power in this degree won't have any effect to 90% of gamers.
also sony has proven they can have better performing and looking games on the weaker system. (pro vs one x)
@HellOfaHunter some of them... I’m curious how much the PS5’s almost double I/O throughput effects the speed of things.
The operating cores speed leads to an almost negligible difference.
Either way looks like both will be worthwhile powerhouses next will end up on my shelf at some point.
@David187 Yes, but I also heard that headphones and stereo speakers are the focus with 6 speaker setups getting worked on in the future.
I mean, cool that it can go beyond Atmos, but at the same time I get to enjoy stereo with some kind of "sweet spot" for 3D audio. It reminds me of the 3DS "sweet spot"
@MasterEMFG the same here i will play sony exclusives on ps5 and the 3rd party games on xbox.
impressive showing but I think they focused on sound quality a bit heavy. just something that doesn’t appeal to me but hey, if sony can set up some booths somewhere that I can test the difference in quality, i could be swayed. As always for me, it will come down to games and subscription incentives to make my mind up.
@GKO900 it’s only Horizon that’s been announced. I can’t find anything but speculation that any other exclusives were going to PC. Or anytime within years.
That would be great as I’d love to play a few on my PC, but I can’t find anything to substantiate that this was going to be a new standard and recovering thing.
Here's what I consider the most interesting takeaway from the DF article (and the 33% mention is curious...hypothetical or is that an actual performance boost?):
"Rather than look at the actual temperature of the silicon die, we look at the activities that the GPU and CPU are performing and set the frequencies on that basis - which makes everything deterministic and repeatable," Cerny explains in his presentation. "While we're at it, we also use AMD's SmartShift technology and send any unused power from the CPU to the GPU so it can squeeze out a few more pixels."
It's a fascinating idea - and entirely at odds with Microsoft's design decisions for Xbox Series X - and what this likely means is that developers will need to be mindful of potential power consumption spikes that could impact clocks and lower performance. However, for Sony this means that PlayStation 5 can hit GPU frequencies way, way higher than we expected. Those clocks are also significantly higher than anything seen from existing AMD parts in the PC space. It also means that, by extension, more can be extracted performance-wise from the 36 available RDNA 2 compute units.
Not wishing to draw comparisons with any existing hardware past, present or future, Cerny presents an intriguing hypothetical scenario - a 36 CU graphics core running at 1GHz up against a notional 48 CU part running at 750MHz. Both deliver 4.6TF of compute performance, but Cerny says that the gaming experience would not be the same.
"Performance is noticeably different, because 'teraflops' is defined as the computational capability of the vector ALU. That's just one part of the GPU, there are a lot of other units - and those other units all run faster when the GPU frequency is higher. At 33 per cent higher frequency, rasterisation goes 33 per cent faster, processing the command buffer goes that much faster, the L1 and L2 caches have that much higher bandwidth, and so on," Cerny explains in his presentation.
"About the only downside is that system memory is 33 per cent further away in terms of cycles, but the large number of benefits more than counterbalance that. As a friend of mine says, a rising tide lifts all boats," explains Cerny. "Also, it's easier to fully use 36 CUs in parallel than it is to fully use 48 CUs - when triangles are small, it's much harder to fill all those CUs with useful work."
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-playstation-5-specs-and-tech-that-deliver-sonys-next-gen-vision
All the kids putting zzzzzzz's in the comments and writing 'Xbox has more teraflops tho' are exactly the type of gamers who choose Xbox, we really don't need them in our community.
Barely backwards compatible with the PS4. Not even b/c with the other previous consoles. Massive PlayStation fan, but Xbox has beat Sony here.
@oldschool1987
I survived the PS4 without BC, I think I can survive the PS5 with limited BC.
Ohhh no the xbox is 1 1/2 teraflops fast we are doomed lol.
Quality over xbox playstation has the best game .. best game sales and biggest selection i for one am sticking with playstation.
if you think those 2 extra TF will be a game-changer for MS you will feel very silly when you see the games they make compared to Sony! the Xbox X has not made a game yet that competes with the PS4 Pro Sony studios games & has more power.
4.12 TF on PS4 Pro and above 10 on the PS5 i hope the price is good. Now i want too hear about the games. 😃👍
@GKO900 it's really interesting how you jumped to conclusions with not many info revealed so far.
@themcnoisy I am also curious about what difference this will make. It sounds like it’s ability to complete tasks and response time. This could easily make up for any GPU and or CPU difference from what I’m reading.
@lacerz who said anything about survival? Xbox have a key feature that PlayStation do not. It's a legitimate criticism...
@HellOfaHunter Well if that's the case this is my last console generation for me, it was fun while it lasted but we'll knew this wasn't gonna last forever
can we talk about the double the speed of memory bandwith on xbox ... ouch
Sounds great. Super fast Ssd x2 the Sex ssd. And non proprietary. 10+ TF rdna2 wont be any different than 12tf.
Couldnt see about memory but I hope its better settup than the sex.(not because console wars but because sex memory sounds weird)
Disappointing all around imo. The system is weaker, and the BC sounds half baked. Only the top 100 PS4 games? Xbox has BC for all games from OG Xbox, 360 and Xbone with improvements across all games.
"But we got exclusives!?! " those are beginning to disappear as well, you can get a mid range PC for under $500 and play everything from everyone except Nintendo apparently 😒
@Juanalf nothing confirmed about the extent of backwards compatibility. don't assume anything.
@themcnoisy
I think its 2x as fast as the sex ssd and non proprietary
So xbox is 1 ps5+1 ps4, that's not just something insignificant everyone here seems to think.
That was complicated. Although on the surface of the Xbox numbers seem higher because of how different the two systems are I don’t think will truly know until we see the same game running on both and able to count resolution and frame rate. The improved SSD is Also going to be interesting if it’s just half an already near instantaneous loading time but it won’t make much difference but if it allows them to free up more RAM then it could have unpredictable impacts.
@MasterEMFG That's how things start, slowly testing the public then boom you'll see everything on PC that's how DLC, micro transactions, season passes, online subscriptions and more if you think otherwise you're naive
@kingeo heh
doesnt work that way. teraflops isnt a good indicator which is what cerny was stressing in his discusson. unless you are hardware/software engineer, it is best to take a wait and see approach. keep in mind that ps5 has a data transfer rate twice that of xbox which presumably means less loading times and better asset streaming.
if there is a decent performance improvement with the xbox, however, i would assume that the price point will be at least $100 more. you cannot get something from nothing afterall.
@GKO900 doubt any more games will come to PC for ages now.
@themcnoisy What it means is that Sony can stream more data per second than the series X. That helps with loading but whether its significantly different in practice, we don't yet know.
We will have to see if it makes a difference in the end results but MS have built in some impressive decompression that doesn't take away from performance and also looking at Machine Learning to improve the look - like DLSS for example. A lot of textures are much bigger than are used and only a fraction of the files are actually needed. It could save a few milliseconds of loading time on Sony's system or save the need to use compression but until we see the reality, it may not be that big a deal in the whole scheme of things or not.
With a LOT of games, they will be built to work on PC's too with maybe 32GB of RAM and looking at Xbox, both have 16GB but MS looks to have a higher bandwidth (faster RAM) with 10GB and 3GB (if I remember) of the Slower RAM is system only which may offset 'some' of the difference in SSD bandwidth. If MS uses predominantly compression and Sony is mostly RAW, uncompressed files, the difference is virtually nothing.
There are numerous other differences with different approaches to various other aspects. The variable GPU frequency for example means that the PS5 will hit 10.28tflops at maximum but could be running at 9.5Tflops (or lower) at times because the fan is running and the CPU is slower too. At the end of the day, both will be a substantial upgrade over current gen and both will have strengths and weaknesses. It seems the PS5 will run PS4 and PS4 Pro enhanced games as if they were running on the PS4/Pro hardware by dropping the clock speeds etc so may not get anything more than a 'minor' improvement (maybe slightly faster loading times for example) where as MS will still be running their Series X at 12.1Tflops and using that to 'improve' older games. It also has the ability to add 'HDR' to games without impacting on the performance as that is handled elsewhere. If you want to play Playstation games, its still going to be the best and only place to play them on but what impact on multi-platform games the differences actually have, only time and in-depth comparisons will tell us...
Personally, I intend to get both regardless but the next few months may help me to determine which I get first as buying both at launch will be costly - especially if I want to increase the SSD storage too....
@lacerz it is not just BC. Also huge improvements in games. And not game code needs to changed. Xbox is dominating in this area. Playing Xbox 360 games in 4K is an amazing experience. Often no need to buy 'Remastered' games.
@GKO900 oh totally hear you... if there’s more revenue sure why not... but I don’t see this happening at a significant level for at least a few years. So it doesn’t really matter. And still speculation.
@Bamila we should also talk about basically double the speed of I/O throughput on ps5. What does it all mean!!!!!? Haha
@Ryall I also wonder if the SSD and it’s ability to transfer data and complete instructions can be utilized as virtual ram. The speed difference could equate to a big difference.
What is HRTF? He was talking something about taking pictures of our ears, what was that all about?
@Flaming_Kaiser
What's even better. Those tflops don't compare 1:1. It's probably closer to 14 ps4 tflops, due to the improved efficiency per clock. A fantastic benefit of the much newer gpu architecture
Not super impressive, but that is likely due to hype buildup. It'll be a great console, it comes down to price now. If it's cheaper than the series X then it'll be a steal. Even at same price it's fine, if only for the games.
Playstation will be more powerful where it matters. The games. It always has been. Xbox looks impressive on paper, but at what cost. They have thrown more and more at the system to ensure they could call themselves the most powerful console - but none of that matters if the games arn't there, or if the console requires a mortgage to purchase.
It will be interesting to see what that massive distance in I/O throughput w(double value for Sony) will do in term of loading time and memory loading...
Too bad the Xbox has the 360 die size.
@HellOfaHunter not really. It means it wont use up main cpu n it will sound great
@carlos82 I think when ms says 600 and sony says 500 that'll be all the difference anyone needs. Also VR2. Most seem to forget that Xbox showed their monster. Sony just showed next gen console. Most likely the target base model and specs.
I just hope the ps5 can be hacked like the ps4 to pirate its exclusives
Big difference here:
XBOX ONE = 900p
PS4 = 1080p
The average Joe easily understood this because there were a lot of 1080p TVs in homes already.
XSX = 4K
PS5 = 4K
Average Joes won't really mind the other numbers like Teraflops. And 4Ks aren't as common in 2020 as 1080ps in 2013, thus the race would be tight, except SONY's games would have to do the talking.
@ellsworth004 Basically our ears are like fingerprints, all different. Therefore the way we hear things is also unique. ie. Putting a small piece of clay in the folds of our outer ear can completely throw off our ability to sense which direction a sound is coming from. (Don't go getting clay stuck in your ear.) A couple of companies are doing what Sony are suggesting but the price for their equipment is through the roof. As a simple example they could theoretically make your cheaper system sound like a several thousand pound system by tricking your ears. (That's what the other companies are doing) Sony though are going to be using it to give you more spacial awareness of your game surroundings and so make the games more immersive.
@Rob_230 Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsport 8/Horizon 5, Gears of War 6, Hellblade 2, The Outer Worlds 2, Flight Simulator 2020 and there will be others with all the studio acquisitions. You may not be interested in any of those but there are millions of others who are.
Before you mention that you can play those on PC, not many people would want the hassle of setting up and upgrading a PC, there’s a lot more casual gamers out there that would rather just game on a console in the comfort of their living room on a sofa.
I agree that PlayStation have great exclusives that are system sellers as I’ve bought 3 PS4’s just to play the latest exclusives but because most of them are single player story driven games, they are the type where once you’ve finished it you move on and don’t look back. It’s the reason I’ve went through 3 PS4s and now don’t own one as I’ve finished the exclusives that I was interested in. At least Halo, Forza and Gears all have great multiplayer to go along with the single player experience.
Some people are not aware that Microsoft showed the "Xbox Series X" (Anaconda), which is the more expensive console in the "Xbox Series" (Project Scarlett). Soon they'll show the "Series S" (Lockhart), which is way inferior to both Series X and PS5. When PS5 Pro is launched, it'll bury both "Xbox Series".
@GeorgeForeman804 Because both consoles were in their limits. PS4 struggles to keep steady 30fps in most recent titles and since XOne is weaker, it has to drop resolution. In much more powerful hardware, the difference will be negligible. And PS5 has somethings the XSX don't, like faster SSD and AMD's SmartShift.
@Bamila not double speed (560GB/S ) and only for 10GB. The other 6GB are much slower.
@HellOfaHunter The original xbox was considered faster than the competing PS2. And if you include mid-gen releases, the xbox one x is faster than the ps4 pro.
@MaccaMUFC Uncharted 4's multiplayer is great.
Oh, this will be an interesting Holiday season.
Too bad that Xbox has so much power, AND NO GAMES TO UTILIZE THAT POWER!! Sony is always gonna be the champ of lineup!!
@HellOfaHunter the original Xbox was more powerful than PS2. It didn't matter though because PS2 sales were incredible. Specs aren't everything, it's all about games!
Great exclusive games win the console race!
@alonsojr1980 The Xbox Series X was codenamed Project Scarlett, I’m not sure why there was an Anaconda mentioned but it could be something that competes with a PS5 Pro but it’s too early to be talking about those when PS5 and Series X isn’t even out yet.
I believe that MS will release a Series S (Lockhart) but not along side the Series X as it could affect the Series X sales but it would be strange to release a more powerful console first then a weaker one second as it’s always been the other way round in the past.
@GeorgeForeman804
“ The Xbox Series X has a 12.155 TFLOP GPU to the PS5 10.2 but some how according to them that isn't a big deal? Yet when the PS4 had a 1.8TFLOP GPU and the Xbox One had a 1.3 TFLOP GPU that stated it was a huge difference”
In terms of proportions, the difference between 1.8 and 1.3 is actually much larger than the difference between 12.16 and 10.28.
It’s simple math: the difference between a 1.8tflop gpu and a 1.3 is approximately 38% more gpu power for the 1.8.
The difference between 12.16 and 10.28 is about 18% more GPU power for the Series X.
So I think what people are saying is this the closest the two consoles have ever been in that category. Even the Xbox One X was about 40% more than the PS4 Pro I believe.
825GB of actual GB is equivalent to 1TB of what hardware manufacturers call a "TB"
I guess the experience on PS5 will be different.
Maybe Xbox won’t have “no loading times” compared to PS5 having “no loading times”.
It's all depends on P R I C E now
Ps5 825 gig ssd storage is that with or without the os installed and that's our actual storage space with the OS installed they're going to say it's a terabyte hard drive and that's 275 gigs for the OS alone
PRICE will be a major factor in the 2 consoles. Sony needs to hold on to the $100. less.
It's really eye opening now, from the stupidity of some media to the straight trolling of journalists like Tom Warren. Console war never dies haha
Ps5 is obviously the most innovative console while Sex is more like a PC and actually slower.
@cowlinator it's 1000 mb = 1gb. 1000gb = 1 tb.
I do rember though when 1024 bytes = 1 mb so I don't know when that changed. It should be 1024 tb = 1 gb. Brain frazzled. @BAMozzy @Neolit can you help with this one please?
@Neolit sweet. That's something to look forward too. Faster systems are always better.
@carlos82 The CPU difference wouldn't matter on PC games. Digital Foundry has said the PS5 SSD expansion is going to have to maintain performance parity with the built in one.
@themcnoisy Originally megabyte was used to describe a byte multiple (220 = 1024 x 1024 = 1,048,576) in computer programming.
However, several international organizations and most storage media (including hard drives and DVDs) use the Latin approach to the measurement whereby a megabyte is 103 bytes (1000 x 1000 = 1,000,000.)
Operating systems, on the other hand still refer to a megabyte as 1024 x 1024 byte but most Storage will be using the Latin format - where so Kilo = 1000, Mega = 1000 x 1000, Giga = 1000 x 1000 x 1000, Tera = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 etc...
Sony is so lame:
Backwards compatibility is a joke, so they got 100 PS4 games somewhat working for now. Also no older platforms from Sony's past is covered. So effing lazy and doing stuff half-a$$. Xbox-sx is 100% BC with XB one games and whatever 360 games that was BC on the XBO.
SSD dilemma:
1. A standard SSD would have been much cheaper and you could have sold the console for less, more affordable for us gamers.
2. In my opinion and of others I read this extra speedy SSD will only probably come to effect for exclusives/first party games only. Multi-platform game devs are not going to put the time in to try and shave off a couple of seconds etc..
3. 825GB will probably after format (if needed) and OS maybe 600GB if lucky.
4. It will cost a arm and leg to get bigger SSD, because this SSD is PCI4.0 type and from what I've read isn't even out yet. I just checked Newegg and they don't even sell this stuff yet cause it's so cutting edge. Do you imagine the cost of a 1TB probably cost almost as much as the the dam console. Right now on Amazon a 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 NVMe is $200 just to give you prospective. Sure you can use standard SSD but who's gonna want to mismatch diff type of SSD's. Plus that standard SSD has to be and I quote "Internal storage will still need to be certified as compatible by Sony" so are we really going to play this game ?
Here's a quote:
"There’s one big caveat, however: The PS5’s expansion bay won’t accept just any M.2 SSD. In order to ensure performance compatibility with the PS5’s high-speed SSD — and physical compatibility with the size of the expansion bay — Sony will be certifying individual M.2 SSDs for the PS5, which uses the new PCI Express 4.0 standard. Cerny said that it’s “likely” that certifications will begin arriving “a bit past” the console’s launch this fall."
https://www.polygon.com/2020/3/18/21185298/ps5-ssd-storage-expansion-xbox-series-x
PS5 is a joke and they are taking us for granted. Pretty sure I'm going with Xbox first this time.
To be fair XSX will have there's own type of SSD but at least they come in the 1TB size which I think is the bare min. I just think these MS SSD's will be more affordable plus it will work right out of the box and won't have to be certified by MS.
I often think of buying an Xbox too but then consider the following.
I stick to one or two games MP long term and get others like Spider-Man, Uncharted, Infamous, Horizon for the story/fun. (can't wait for Cyberpunk 2077 and BGE2) Looking at my gaming habits, the differences between the two machines aren't enough to excite me to get an Xbox as well as a PS5. I'd only do it if MS came up with some incredibly awesome exclusive game.
@JJ2 what's so bad about slow Sex?
@nathanSF
Well I heard small and vigorous is better than big but lazy. I'm talking about the consoles of course.
@LaJettatura Mine is quite dusty didnt use it in 3 years. Getting a cheap laptop for the basics. 😆
@HellOfaHunter I hear you. When was the last time sound was any priority holding a generation back?
@JJ2 Oh, er, yes, so was I.. of course.
@BAMozzy @Neolit thanks lads. Appreciate the backup.
the bottom line the difference between PS5 and xbox SX equal the power of the current ps4 power
@themcnoisy this means developers can focus more on the story they want to tell and less on creating ways to distract the user from seeing a load screen like long corridors. When the person you are controlling turns around the environment is immediately rendered. For instance division 2 could add motor bikes or cars to the game now as they are not hindered by the speed of the hard drive. Although now it gives devs a new problem that everything would be so fast it could be jarring for some users they will have to figure out a way to slow it down...haha. this gives developers for ps more freedom to make games they want without limitations of a HDD. This could mean bigger file sizes. But I can't wait for PS5 just let me pre-order the damn thing already....lol
So xbox has about 15% more power, but ps5 has 100%+ more ssd speed, not a problem for me
For my pc I rather have 100% speedier ssd rather than 15% more powerful videocard.
ps. I find it really really weird thats people freak up about ps5 weaker 15% power wise but suddenly okay when told ps5 has 100% speedier ssd, so 3rd party developer going to use that 15% more power but somehow doesn't want to use 100% more speed?
@wiiware it's funny to know that PS5's SSD (include SSD itself and its Connector to RAM) has such fast speed that in theory they don't need to Load PS5's OS to RAM and instead, when you run a Game, they can sent it to SSD (and allow those 16GB RAM as whole used by Game) and when you need it again, they can send it back to RAM for usage!!!
also, because they use a 16GB unique RAM (opposite to XSeX approach that use 10GB fast + 6GB slow RAM slots), in the end as whole, Sony's approach will be sooo better in both Usage and Speed!
There are so many other advantages that having a fast SSD + fast Connector became soo many important than a slidy powerful GPU...
Both specs are very good, truly represent Nextgen. The winner will be who has the right pricing.
Just another pointless console war, they're close enough to be the same. Other than few minor tweaks Xbox puts over some 3rd party games with the small boost.
I do wonder if Sony have left a surprise out or if the SSD makes such a difference it’s revolutionary. I mean Andrea Pessino from Ready at Dawn said “the PlayStation 5 is one of the most revolutionary, inspired home consoles ever designed”
Thing is he must know the XSX specs so why not say that’s revolutionary if more powerful? I dunno...
@parvaz1 Yup, it's not about loading time, it's about streaming, how fast can ps5 stream data on open world games, or ps5 design thats very focused on eliminating bottleneck, giving us hopefully no loading or very fast loading time on games like way back in the nes/snes cartridge era.
@Dodoo I think xbox specs is powerful but it just specs upgrade like pc, there's no suprise or innovative about it.
@nmowbray ahhh okay. That is a great example. So glad push is a hive of technical knowledge, thank you for taking the time to reply.
@themcnoisy anytime, after watching the deep dive it made me even more excited to buy a PS5. Wish I could just pre order already...lol
@HellOfaHunter what good is all that power and specs if there r no next gen games to see it all in action lol ps5 for the win
@Blaster_master cutting edge is making it more futurproof.. Pushing developers to make better games. They just got more speed. And that will play big factor in the upcoming games! They can do things that was not possible at all!. I see you point with the storage. But remember with this speed games won't be as big in size since they can jus load it instead of then storage it
All M$ have done is put a gaming PC together. That's what Xbox was always about. Sony have created a console. I think Sony's machine is more innovative. I am also interested in 3D sound. Sony is the king of audio reproduction. With the variable frequency feature and custom SSD it looks like PS5 has more than a couple of tricks up its sleeve.
I thought Xbox had the easy win, because I don't understand the specs, but going by Digital Foundry and other tech geeks who can layman this stuff, it seems like tflops isn't a good way to measure power. The SSD in the PS5 is meant to be a game changer, it's much, much faster than Xbox and could potentially make games run much better on PS5.
But we'll have to wait and see when they're out.
The discrepancy isn't as far off as the initial specs would lead one to believe. Digital foundry and my favourite PS YouTuber, Mystic pointed this out. All Sony needs Is better launch titles, which it likely will, and people will be swayed into getting one.
@lacerz Thank you. I finally read something good on the internet. We're on the same boat.
Sadly for Xbox, nobody buys a console for its hardware but for its exclusive games since most third-party games are also available on PC which will be able to deliver the "best version" of those games. Just look at the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
The hardware advantage of the Xbox to the PS5 won't even be noticeable unless you are trying to nitpick every small detail you can just to complain about something.
@HellOfaHunter Xbox was more powerful than PS2, though it released later, they are same gen, the 360 was notably more powerful than the PS3 in terms of gpu (PS3 was originally going to launch without one) Xbox one X is notably more powerful than PS4 Pro. The only Sony console that was more powerful was the PS4. That is the anomaly, not the norm.
It is not being honest showing the PS5 boast clock against the Xbox base GPU clock that 10.2 TFLOP figure will not hold for more than a second or two. The PS5 is a 9 TFLOP GPU Console.
It's games that sell consoles I ain't getting a PS5 decided to upgrade my pc, and with th new GPUs coming out its now a great time to invest in a build or an upgrade. I expect PS4 triple a to come to steam next few years which is fine with me
Considering how good Sony's first party games and several third party games look on PS4, I'm going to be Impressed with PS5 no matter how powerful it is compared to the Xbox Series X. God of War looks amazing and that's running on 8 year old hardware.
@Blaster_master you have to take in consideration that the 1TB after format will be around 850gb of usable storage, plus the 3 op sys that Microsoft is using for the Xbox it will be actually around 800gb of usable storage. If Sony will go again with BSD, you have to know that the core BSD is less than 1gb.
@DeepSpace5D you have to understand that Sony this time is going with a costume solution for the GPU than what it was on the PS4. With the gpu scrubbers and the direct access to the SSD. Plus with the I/O, decompression and 3D audio all have separate chips, taking any strain from the CPU and GPU. Microsoft didn’t go all that costume, plus the OS constrain in the system because if it’s running the same Os like the XOne than will be 3 different ones. That’s why in real life you will not see a big difference between the 2 consoles. Time will tell
And what Cerny said is true, is harder to fill up al 52CU units with something to do, than having less CU but at a higher clock speed. U can see this on PC space, if u over clock a 2070ti u are coming in the same lvl of performance with 2080. And a smaller dye is easier to cool to.
For all the Xbox fans out there wait for reviews before you buy a series x. The cooling sys looks flawed in my opinion I think it will thermal throttle. Series S looks much better with a traditional active cooling. The series x looks to dense to have proper air flow, would have been a better solution to put the fan under and just force pull fresh air inside.
Now I get the funny comments here about the minimal spec difference and how it won't be noticeable, all true.
Really this comes down to the following differentiators:
PS5: Twice as fast loading times & awesome exclusives
Xbox X: "Free" console with access to over 100 games at launch through game pass with a decent level of upscaling and enhancements thrown in.
I get the "Free" statements a little provocative, but literally day one you can grab a console and games for nothing and the subscription works out slightly cheaper than buying the console and gamepass out right.
I think this is really interesting, very different approaches.
@SilkySmile89 That’s something I fully understand. My original point was, not even taking into consideration all the custom architecture of the PS5, it’s still only about an 18% difference in raw power which in reality is very small.
The PS5’s unique advantages are there to be utilized but it will be up to third-party devs to do so. If they do bare minimum ports for parity, we could see the Series X with slight advantages in resolution or framerate, but the differences are going to be miniscule and not very noticeable.
First-party games on the PS5 will be very impressive though, taking advantage of all its customization.
@themcnoisy YES. This spec means data transfer per second, this will allow for possibility for faster downloads, faster loading screens, and higher maybe higher fps (there is probably a cap though). But this is HUGE. Definitely not a spec to ignore, it's very important.
Why are sony fans deluded, PS5 will have less backward compatibility than the Xbox, it will not even be compatible with all PS4 games. XBOX however will have full backward compatibility right back to the original XBOX psnow is poor compared to XBOX Game Pass (Every New XBOX/PC Exclusive free on day one) New XBOX Consoles around £100+ cheaper (at least) than PS5. Xcloud so you can play your XBOX games on android devices.
@themcnoisy it should mean faster load times and bigger maps than ever.
Until its shown to us we really don't know what it'll mean.
@danny281 cheers for the reply. But this article is from September!
Have to say Microsoft have released a great spec console!
BUT
Sony has innovated more with adding a great controller to improve the gaming experience.
Either way i hope everyone enjoys their new console and stay safe!
