The PS5 is a fantastic console, but increasingly we’ve been feeling that its operating system doesn’t feel designed with modern games in mind. This is particularly ironic when you consider Sony’s live service push: Helldivers 2 has already struck big, but it’s desperate to add Concord or Fairgame$ to the mix.
Here’s the thing: like it or loathe it, many games are built around seasons these days. If you watched Ubisoft Forward overnight, you’d have probably noticed how it announced updates and roadmaps for many of its games: The Crew Motorfest is getting a new map, XDefiant is adding an extra faction, and Skull & Bones is bringing dragons to its sailing simulation.
This is how most games function these days: every six weeks Genshin Impact gets new time-limited events and content updates; Honkai Star Rail the same. If you play Call of Duty, there’s a Gundam update available now, featuring skins and some gameplay modes. Obviously, Fortnite is all about car customisation and Mad Max-esque gauntlets at the moment as well.
Games, rather than being static entities that can be played, completed, and shelved, are becoming more like television: there’s a schedule bringing new things to experience every day. But the PS5 itself needs to act like the Radio Times, to communicate to you what’s going on in your favourite titles, and why you should be paying attention.
As it stands, outside the extremely undercooked News section and that What’s New tab which isn’t even available outside the United States, the console is doing nothing to spotlight the ever-changing nature of the titles installed on your hard drive. Compare to the App Store, for example, where every time you load it up you’re introduced to the events Happening Now across a spectrum of games.
Sony’s tried to build a free-to-play category on the PS Store, intended to teach you about the events ongoing in popular games – but this is merely a contextless list of logos, rather than information about what’s actually going on each game. It’s alarming how static the system feels, when the content on it is ever-changing these days.
The platform holder will be aware of the problem: it’ll want to communicate all of the latest content to players, because it knows that’ll drive engagement and, ultimately, revenue. But its slow moving, and it takes an eternity for the firm to actually incorporate the features players want. PS Stars, for example, is still restricted to the mobile app only.
Perhaps this will be something it’ll finally get around to exploring on the PS6, but for now, the PS5 doesn’t really feel designed with the modern game in mind.

The only such service I would appreciate would be to have all such games and DLC that includes things like this to be a filter I can turn off in the PSN store. I don’t want to search for games and be assailed with a multitude of social hang out spaces. I do agree it’s weird Sony don’t do it better though, it’s where they are looking to make most of their money after all.
@thefourfoldroot1 yeah this has to be an optional feature of the store. Look at how Xbox has so many egregious ads on the main screen.
It is the developers job to make sure their player base knows what updates are happening in their games. Not the platform holder.
That sounds like some notifications I would switch off.
I actually think they could do more interaction for single player games also.
I personally don’t play any games that are live service (besides Guild Wars 2 on PC).
The PS5 tries to show me news about games I’m interested in, but most of the time it’s updates on content I’m nowhere near playing or games I only dabbled in.
What I’d like is some user generated content popping up to show the community of the game I’m currently playing.
For me I’m on FF15. About 90hrs in and almost at the Platinum. Yes, I know it’s a PS4 game and old, but if there was a way for the PS5 to recognise that was the game I’m invested in and somehow link to the Reddit page and share a screenshot a day from another player, or give me a tips on grinding AP or whatever, I would feel a lot more like I’m part of the community of that game.
Instead, I’m doing that personally by going onto the Reddit for that game. I may be asking too much, but I’m just saying that I like community. Even in single player games. Even if it’s just knowing others are enjoying the same content as me. So surely there is something Sony can add to cater to that.
Each game has a news section underneath it does it not?
So you’ll find the news there for each individual game, or am I imagining this?
@Kienda They should have the data to know you’ve been playing a lot of FF15 recently. There’s no reason why they couldn’t promote things based on your playing habits.

In the UK we have the news tab, when we press the PlayStation button it's usually the first tab, that usually tells me when some games have updates or a DLC launched like with Destiny 2, Warframe and Tower of Fantasy as im constantly getting new articles based on those titles, as long as your following the game you should get articles based on that title.

I kind of like it the way things are and if they introduce more "in your face" announcements for updates to live service games, there has to be an option to turn it off. I will never play games "on a schedule" and I like being able to turn on my console and start the game or streaming app I turned my console on for without having a bunch of other stuff screaming at me that I'm missing out on limited time content for some game in my library that I don't care about (either because I'm done with it, not yet ready to get stuck in with it or simply because it came as a PS Plus game and I didn't realize it was a live service game in the first place)
@Jacko11 Only shows for your ten most recent games, though, and I don’t think it does a good enough job of driving your interest and attention. You only really see if if you select the game tile and scroll down.
I don't want the ads to be honest. I just want to get straight into the game I'm playing. Most games these days do a good enough job on the home screen when you launch the title if there is something they want you to be aware of

If I want to know information about a specific game, then it makes sense that i’d go to the tile for it no?
Same with anything really, if I want to know news about Call of Duty or Fortnite for example, then i’ll go to the social media/partners accounts for info.
So the same would apply here, I want info on game X, so I go to the tile for game X where i’ll see everything. News, add-ons, tournament info, live streams on Twitch, friends who play, time played, trophies etc
Call me stuck in the past but I’ve gotten far too used to the ps3, vita and ps4 UIs to even feel remotely comfortable with the ps5 one. Nuthin’ wrong with it, just personal preference.
Honestly, I don’t spend much time at the Home Screen and I find most of the content there completely useless and arbitrary. And I guess that’s what the point of this article is, that however they do it, Sony needs a better way to algorithmically show people information that interests them. Right now I just interpret all the visual noise as advertisements to ignore. Fortnite and COD garbage updates have zero interest for me. And when it does try to highlight something for me that I actually played, it’s from months or even years ago. For example, it’s repeatedly showing me random little promos for Control, which is a game I absolutely loved, yes, but I platinum’d it in early 2021. I’m not going to go back and engage in that game. The still shots of Jesse are eye catching (since I have a crush on her 😅) but to what effect? Now when you have some info on Control 2 then by all means show me.
The system allows you to have “folllowed games” and that is where some of this comes from I guess. Unfortunately the list itself is flawed and going back through and clearing out games from the list every few weeks (because it seems to automatically add games to the list, such as any that you claim on PS+) is a chore and doesn’t really seem to effect what they show on the Home Screen in the end.
If its 'outside' of the Top 10 games I'm playing right now, chances are I've moved on from any 'Live Service' game and couldn't care less new content is available. If I was 'excited' by said Live Service game, I'd be well aware of their 'next' Season or Content drop without needing more Clutter on the screen.
When I turn my Console on, I have a very good idea of what I want to be playing before the Console has booted up and I want to get in that game as Quickly as possible. I don't care about news, ads etc - I get enough of that from Social Media.
Personaly I hate all game add-ons.
It should be implemented in game from day one or released as standalone or sequel.
Also I absolutely don't care any news of existing games. I would also make all updates optional, because most of time they screw whole game (for example Diablo 4 v1.02 and higher).
They are whining game sales drops, but on the other hand they are inventing tools to keep players in game and NOT buying another game. And still poking into game mechanics until game feels flat and unfunny.

No it is not. In terms of the totality of games coming out, live service stuff is still a minority - even taking into account all the dead-on-arrival ones. Regardless of the popularity of the successful ones, it's one hell of a hyperbole to suggest that this seasonal crap represents the majority of nowaday's games. That's 'reality' only for someone living in a Fortnite-shaped bubble or similar.
Yes, yes, these games make a lot of money and are here to stay whether we like them or not, etc. But let's not start pushing a narrative that this is the norm now and that "traditional" games with a clear beginning and end are now the outliers, when the sheer numbers of these projects still far eclipse live-service's own on any modern system, any month of the year.
Isn't this more of an opinion rather than news? Either way I turn all notifications off anyway. I wanna play my games in peace.
@get2sammyb Sony’s communication in general leaves a lot to be desired these days. PlayStation Stars has been down for days now and we’ve received no notification to say it’s being fixed or thanking us for being patient while it’s being updated. It doesn’t take much effort but would certainly be appreciated by the community. Really disappointing how much PlayStation takes its fanbase for granted these days.
PlayStation 5 has official news it's to the point informing you about the game's you own (up and coming DLC, updates to the game etc). And even game's you've wished listed.

They couldn't even have the double tap PS button to switch between last used apps.
Instead I have to press home, go to trophies which orders' change everytime, click to show all trophies, click to show trophies in the order I like AND I CAN'T SWITCH BACK TO MY GAME WITHOUT LOSING ALL THESE CLICKS!?
You're not old school. It's just inherently bad. Very Japanese like. I love them, but expecting good UI from Sony and Nintendo or Japanese games is just a nono.
The very last thing I want it the ps5 giving me recommendations or notifications about this or that has happened in a game or a new update adds x and all that jazz

It sounds like a useful idea for those int that sort of game. I would want it sectioned off in it's own area so I wouldn't have to look at it or get useless news about games I don't play.
@breakneck The Xbox home screen works really well in my opinion. The only time you get a lot of ads is if you scroll into them. Which I don't.
I would also like to see which games need an update without having to click on each one and check. It's something that Xbox does already do it can't be difficult to do.
And folders. I want folders.
@get2sammyb Sorry to hark on about Xbox but I love the fact you can click on a game and see what DLC/extras if any are available and loads of it turns out to be free (especially with BC games).

They know exactly what I’m playing and there are options available to them to create more social/interactive experiences for players based on what they’re playing by incorporating social media/reddit etc and allowing content (based on the users preferences) in order to increase our experiences and enjoyment of the games we are playing at the time. It could even be based on recommendations from other users or something.
I was meaning to express my agreement with your article. But actually I think they could do far, far more and just allow players to turn on or off various notifications and integration to get the best experience for themselves.
