They say it's possible to have too much of a good thing, but nobody knew of Elden Ring when they coined the phrase all those centuries ago. An outstanding winner of copious Game of the Year accolades, the experience remains relevant to this day — and that's even without this month's huge Shadow of the Erdtree DLC beckoning veterans back to The Lands Between. Ahead of release, Bandai Namco kindly invited us to Paris to play the opening three hours of the expansion. In motion, within the first area alone, it's the most comprehensive extension of a game FromSoftware has ever created.
Having selected from one of three different classes (a warrior, knight, or sorcerer at level 150), we entered The Land of Shadow via a new portal in Mohgwyn Palace, accessed by interacting with Miquella's hand sticking out of the cocoon in the back. From there, the task was simple: Bandai Namco allowed us exactly three hours to freely explore the opening area of the DLC, taking in its core story path, optional areas, and new features and mechanics. It's more Elden Ring on the face of it, but dig a little deeper and you shall find things to differentiate Shadow of the Erdtree from the base game.
The initial landmass upon entering The Land of Shadow puts even the gloomiest places across the original experience to shame. Presumably once a proud land, it's now overcome with rot and ruin. Set under the cover of night, this is an overwhelmingly dark place that feels purposefully desolate. Its fields feature few enemies, with only a few patrolling demons and gargoyles choosing to attack. It's a setting not even your rivals wish to inhabit, with magical gravestones and mass hangings taking their place off in the distance.
Enemy density increases as you approach the region’s landmarks, though, as new legacy dungeons and other optional locations provide excellent distractions to the mainline pursuit of Miquella. With new bosses at the end of every one — we only managed to overcome one of the three big fights encountered in the preview session — the labyrinthine routes to those arenas and beyond remain just as gripping as they are in the base game. One boss wore a lion's face yet was anything but one elsewhere, another worked with a greatsword and flaming arrows to cover both close and long-range fights, and a third was the twin sister of a familiar face.
If you're jumping into Shadow of the Erdtree after a long break, these boss battles may prove to be a bit of a brick wall, as you work to regain the muscle memory lost in the two years following the base game's release. However, Shadow of the Erdtree offers its own helping hand via a brand new mechanic called the Scadutree Blessing. By collecting specific items across The Land of Shadow, you can take them back to a Site of Grace and upgrade your ability to deal and negate damage, and also enhance your Spirit Ashes. These enhancements are only active when you're in the DLC; they don't apply if you return to the original game.
It was impossible to tell just how much of an effect the blessings had during our hands on session, but it's an interesting addition that's going to benefit both new players and returning professionals. Another new feature we didn't have enough time to work out is the presence of new golden crosses both in the game world and on your map. The associated description said they were meant to mark Miquella's footprints, and the three we found were next to Sites of Grace. It seems like there's something to them, but exposure in the opening area alone wasn't enough to understand their use.
There were then new Ashes of War to discover, more items with unique uses, extra talismans to equip, and variants of known consumables that allow you to use them much faster in the heat of battle. FromSoftware has already promised 10 major boss encounters and 100 new weapons across eight bonus categories, so our three hours with the DLC really were just scratching the surface.
They were enough at least to prove that Shadow of the Erdtree is mostly more of a very good thing with a few new ideas sprinkled in. The expansion is almost certainly holding its biggest secrets close to its chest, but in terms of how you play and interact with it, this is more Elden Ring. Leaning into all the greatest aspects of the base game, The Land of Shadow invites another brutally gripping experience with industry-leading art direction, tense combat, and the greatest sense of exploration. In its opening hours, Shadow of the Erdtree emulates the base Elden Ring undertaking — that's no bad thing when, to this day, it remains genre-defining.
Not So Holy: Playing Elden Ring in a Church
There cannot have been many other preview events with a bigger contrast between the venue and the game in question than playing Elden Ring in a Paris church. The setting, named Village Reille, has likely never before so proudly displayed the statue of a demon, in a physical recreation of Messmer the Impaler upon its altar.
Then, from its balcony and the ceiling, promotional drapes bearing the Elden Ring branding were hung, sometimes close to the stained glass windows depicting religious events. Along the centre were two rows of stations with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC installed, complete with keyboard and mouse, and Xbox and PS5 controller options. A stunning place to briefly play an extension of one of the best PS5 games around, Bandai Namco clearly knows how to pick them.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree releases for PS5, PS4 on 21st June 2024. Will you be returning to the game and then venturing out to The Land of Shadow? Let us know in the comments below.

Hey everyone, I can only speak to what I saw in the three hours of the preview session, but if you have any questions, feel free to copy me in and I'll try to answer them the best I can.
MAybe it's time to jump on the game..IS the dlc included in the retail version? How is the performance? 60 fps? ray tracing mode.
Those additions sound fantastic for someone like me who can't remember the controls from two years ago. Great awareness from the devs there.
@zebric21 I am sure there is a bundle that includes both the DLC and base game (if not available now, it will probably come at release), but they are separate purchases.
It does have a 60fps option, but VRR is ideal as it doesn't lock to 60 (unless you play the PS4 version via backwards compatibility at the expense of image quality). I think it mostly sticks in the 50 - 60 range, so not terrible frame drops - especially after all the patches it's had over time.
There is an RT Mode, but it is kind of pointless. It uses RT Shadows and unless you absolutely care that every piece of grass has shadows applied, it's not worth the performance cost.
Was that an active church or is it a building who used to be a church, because if it's active displaying that is not a good look.
Beautifully written preview! It’s either this or Prince of Persia next. Don’t think I’ll find it in myself to hold off on this.
I don’t want to read anything about it so I’ll be as surprised as possible, but my hype level is enormous by now.
What do you guys recommend after having completed the base game and wanting to play it again before playing the DLC: start a whole new game or a new game plus?
Still longer than the last Call Of Duty campaign.
@Darude84 I'd strongly recommend leaving a fully levelled character at the end of the game and not jumping into New Game+. The characters we could choose from were all level 150 and the DLC was difficult.
If you want to play more of the game, I'd create a second character and mess around with it for a bit. Then you have your main character ready and waiting for the DLC.
It's still unclear to me at what level you should start the DLC.
I do want to jump into the DLC, but I’m kind of torn. I have zero doubt the game will be a masterpiece, but I haven’t touched the base game in ears. I beat it originally, and got halfway through a NG+ run. Jumping in again at this point seems daunting, particularly re-learning the controls, mechanics, and even my reflexes. We will see how accessible this DLC is once it releases.
The architecture in FromSoftware's games are simply remarkable. I stop from time to time to admire the buildings. Their art overall is just marvelous!
@LiamCroft Thanks. I meant that I want to replay the base game (all the way up to the end bosses) anyway. What would be the better experience for the base game: new game or +?
I mean in terms of unlockable cool stuff through new game + or on the other hand a hampered experience because of being too overleveled.
Seems kinda odd playing it in a church 🤔 not very respectful.
I love the use of the venue for this event LOL
This is something I wish would happen and it actually did.
Nothing to do with religion, it's just a very fitting venue aesthetically and is consistent with the subject matter.
What would you choose: Best Buy, or big box store, or a church. A trailer in a parking lot with a gaming rig or a church.
I'd pick the church over any other venue.
Absolutely loved Elden Ring, had it day one, got about a third of the way through NG+ but moved onto something or other about 2 months later.
I remember now, I got the Launch Edition from The Game Collection, all the little bits n bobs with it, and got a refund on release day of £5, can't remember why.
So the god knows how many hours enjoyed for a total of £40.
Then I sold it on for £50.
It's been long enough now that I will get it again, and this and the base game still feel fresh.
£40 or less by end of summer.
So excited to play this. I never started NG+ with my main character so i'm perfectly ready for this.
My biggest hurdle with the dlc is that I skipped Mohg previously when I beat the game and now I’m too weak to beat Commander Niall. I am facepalming so hard at this because I know I could’ve beaten him two years ago.
@LiamCroft Do we know how meaty an expansion this is in terms of runtime, how many areas or dungeons there are etc?
Also, the one major negative for me with Elden Ring aside from dated visuals and poor performance were those copy and paste side dungeons. Did you see any hint of those returning in the dlc?
@DonkeyFantasy Thanks! I’ll start a whole new run then.
I can't wait to jump back in!
@KundaliniRising333 FromSoftware has said the play space of the DLC is about the same size as Limgrave.
As for side dungeons, I can only speak for the opening area, but there was one location that was just a staircase down into a cave that housed an immediate boss fight. It looked just like some of those underground dungeons you'd see in the early base game.
Since it's DLC I assume it won't but...does it have a plat trophy? Sony should change that stupid rule
@LiamCroft Great write up... and very jealous! Counting the days, really looking forward to this.
A couple of questions - can you take the new DLC weapons/talismans/ashes back into the base game? Or can they only be used in the DLC area?
And how could this influence matchmaking/co-op in base game? Would using a DLC weapon in base game prevent you from matching with others who have not purchased the DLC?
@CJD87 Thanks! Yes, all the new items and weapons will be usable in the base game too. The only thing that won’t carry back is the new levelling mechanic, which is exclusive to the DLC area.
I can’t say for sure how it would affect matchmaking, but since everyone is still connecting to the same server, I would assume the game will act the same and let you matchmake with non-DLC owners, and vice versa.
Finished up my second Elden Ring playthrough just a few months back - me good and ready, bring it on!
Absolutely can’t wait for this. Almost finished my low-level challenge run, I’m ready to go!
@B0udoir I've been wondering this too, but in the preview Liam says he was offered the chance to create a fresh character for the demo at level 150, if I'm reading it right. So we're talking late game/early NG+ by the looks of it
@B0udoir @LiamCroft
That's exactly my problem! I'm not fully through the base game yet and I wonder if I'm fit enough to get by in DLC.
@Gremio108 @Bydlak While you can access it earlier, I really feel the DLC is pretty much end-game content. We were given level 150 characters to play with at the preview event and it was difficult.
Got you, thanks for the quick reply!
@KundaliniRising333 Dated visuals and poor performance? Not sure I understand this comment.
Dammit, I’d just started NG+ last year and didn’t get chance to go back. Hmmm, the masochistic option, or the 100 hour option? I really want to stick with my original character. Looking forward to this!
Its crazy how excited I am for this. Maybe because its the first game in a while that I know will be a surefire masterpiece. Just more of the same is exactly what I want.
@LiamCroft did you encounter a lot of new spells in your playthrough? My main character is an Int build and I found myself using the same 3 spells the entire base game. Also in general was there a regular cadence of new weapons / spells in the first 3 hours?
@cburg Haven't you heard, the guy is just negative on everything.
