As we grabbed an Astro blue mocktail and ventured down into Sony's basement dwelling at Summer Game Fest Play Days, Astro Bot came into view, and we immediately knew we were in for a good time. Team Asobi's cutesy robot hero is finally getting the full-length, full-fat platforming game he deserves, and even just the artwork adorning the walls is enough to put a smile on the face of any jet-lagged journalist. Going into the game, we knew it'd be a delight, but even just a handful of levels is enough to know this is shaping up to be a standout game in PS5's library.
As soon as we picked up the DualSense controller and saw the demo's title screen, the playfulness of Astro games is there. We guide Astro's on-screen DualSpeeder with 1:1 motion, and the haptics are just as fantastic as in Astro's Playroom. However, creative director Nicolas Doucet tells us the team has taken things a step further in realising the potential of the DualSense's features.
"We spend a lot of time prototyping game mechanics in an isolated form, and then later we think about how we can stitch them together in a way that makes sense. We had three or four people break away from the team, and we nicknamed that team DualSense 2.0," he tells us.
"We did lots of demos [and] technical tests," he continues; one new feature born from this is the sponge power-up, as the team wanted to see if they could capture the sensation of squeezing out a sponge with the adaptive trigger. Perhaps even more intriguingly, Astro can now brush his hand against walls, and you'll feel that in the controller — but you might come across a secret passage simply thanks to a change in texture.
We didn't find any such secrets in the few levels we played, but they're so full of things to toy with we forgot all about it. The first stage takes us through grassy areas and pools of water, with lots of small asides you can explore as you progress. One such distraction is an area with some footballs and a goalie-style enemy between two trees, and you can "score a goal" by whacking the balls into the baddie. Another is a giant inflatable duck that's just fun to hop around on and see how it reacts. There are many fun touches like this that are there simply to bring you joy.
As well as these fun little asides, which are intended to be simple playthings for younger players, Astro Bot is constantly introducing new gameplay ideas that may only last a minute or two in each level. For example, a new power-up turns Astro into a floating bubble, allowing you to reach new parts of the stage. Another, in a construction-themed level, puts a dog on his back that allows him to charge forward, which can be used for traversal and defeating enemies. Some frog boxing gloves gave Astro's punches much longer range, and we put them to good use in a boss fight against a big robo-octopus.
While you're hopping around each stage, you're on the lookout for Astro's scattered crew mates, strewn about in a very similar fashion to Astro Bot Rescue Mission. However, unlike the PSVR title, some of the bots are PlayStation cameos; we came across bots dressed like Ratchet, Rivet, PaRappa, UmJammer Lammy, Jak, and many more. Doucet tells us there are over 150 of these special bots to find, but he's very much aware of striking a balance between celebrating PlayStation's legacy and ensuring Astro has its own stamp.
"Astro needs to develop its own identity and its own world. And even though it's associated with the hardware, it's great. It's really welcome. But it shouldn't become a limitation." He tells us the team ensured they had enough fresh ideas and gameplay that it's its own game, but that it would be a shame after Astro's Playroom to not delve deeper into character references. "And I mean, really, just because it's fun. It's a nostalgic touch. And since we can do it, why not?"
While some cameo characters are collected as normal, others — PlayStation's biggest heroes, like Kratos and Atreus — appear to have a larger role. We won't spoil anything, but we bumped into the pair after defeating the demo's boss, and there's definitely more to their presence than a simple nod, which is very exciting.
The regular levels are incredibly fun to go through, and there's plenty to discover off the beaten path, but other types of levels were introduced to us too. As we flew around the galaxy map, we found a Circle button planet that took us to a much more difficult challenge level — a short platforming gauntlet for more hardcore players to conquer. The platforming and controls feel identical to Playroom, which is to say they're super tight and very intuitive.
On top of that, it all looks stunning. Running in flawless 60 frames-per-second, the game's visuals are a step above Astro's Playroom while retaining its visual identity, and alongside a jolly soundtrack, the presentation here is on point.
We didn't want to stop playing. This has only further cemented in our minds that Astro Bot will be a real treasure of a PS5 exclusive when it launches in September; the invention and passion pours out of the screen, and if the few levels we've played are any indication, this could be on its way to becoming a standout 3D platformer of the modern era — and pure bliss for PlayStation die-hards.
Astro Bot is coming to PS5 on 6th September, 2024. Are you excited to jump on this adorable platformer? Hop into the comments section below.

No pressure then.
Wow, great write up! This got me excited for this game and I wasnt really interested before 😃
Sounds amazing, I can't wait.
I actually loved the sackboy game at launch. So it's nice to have another platformer.
Thanks for this write up!
Expectations are well and truly up now - I don't doubt they will deliver
Thank you for the read, it makes the wait even more difficult!
With Rebirth, Stellar Blade and this, Sony has really catered to my taste like never before …very strong year.
This and sackboy are just pure feel good platformers. Cant wait. Any news of multiplayer? Sorry not had chance to read the post.
Very much looking forward to playing this!
This will be my GOTY, I can already sense it.
This is the kind of game that Sony is lacking nowadays and we need more. Hoping that this game gets successful enough for Sony to greenlight more platformers.
@jamison1993 Sackboy is criminally underrated imo.
Seen and heard enough now where I don't want to know anymore now. September can't come soon enough.
Platform junkie. Great news!
@Nei I know exactly what you mean. We've been eating good this year
I mean we all knew it was going to be good, but this sounds as outstanding as expected. Absolutely can't wait to play!
Great write up, Stephen!
september?!? this would’ve been the perfect summer game !!
Certainly a PS5 game which won’t come to PC.
This preview is mouthwatering (or it’s just my appetite for supper…).
Playroom is still the best ps5 game released so far and it seems itll only be beaten by its sequel. I'm way too hype for this and I truly hope it sells at least a few million
I got very high expectations for this game...and have very little doubt this game will meet or even exceed them. Really looking forward to it!
Jim Ryan had a good hunch to reconstruct Japan Studios into Team Asobi. They had a killer app with Astros Rescue Mission and an absolute amazing kickoff with Astros Playroom on the PS5 launch. Now Astro Bot set to come out this very year is probably a 3 outta 3 Hits Situation.
Already preordered my copy on PSN.
I still think its unfortunate Sony isnt releasing a Steelbook release of it. September cant come soon enough.
"Running in flawless 60 frames-per-second"
Thank you for including this.
Game pre ordered.
I want that astro bot figurine!!!
THIS IS THE GOAT!
Ever since Astro's Playroom, the IP has a chance to be a big mascot for the platform. I'm glad Astro is getting a full game release to really cement that.
It's the only Mario beater I've seen. Playing rescue mission was like playing Mario 64 for the first time. Ps5 Playroom was better than some mario games despite its length. This is the kind of game that can get a whole new generation invested. Hope Sony gives it the push it deserves.. but moreso hope people buy it. What's releasing around then? Hope it's not up against heavyweights..
@Bamila I second that! :3
Anyway. Yo, that's a big headline for Astro Bot which i hope is true and follow by a great sales.
@Bamila I have one.. it's so so nice. Has changeable face plates. Hopefully good smile do a reprint around game launch.
@Sequel Star Wars is a few days before I think. But I'm sure it'll be fine, Sony will have reasonable expectations.
It's clearly going to review VERY well.
Ever since Astro Bot Rescue Mission redefined what 3D platformer means to me, I’d say this will be the best platformer this side of PSVR1
I didn’t really doubt it but thank you for 60fps.
I absolutely love the little series references and hope they don't completely do away with them here or in the future. Seeing monster hunter bots at a camp with the awesome weapon types and alucard bot in a coffin or the buster sword is part of what put a big smile on my face playing it
Does a platformer exist that is as good as Super Mario 64 (Nintendo platformers excluded)?
@Max_the_German I will be on PC in 1-2 years just like Sackboy.
@NoHope Super Mario Galaxy?
@NoHope I always preferred the Spyro trilogy on PS1 to Nintendo's platformer offerings on N64.
The trailer gave me a mixture of Super Mario Galaxy and Puppeteer vibes. Honestly, even as a dude in his late 30s playing shooters and action games, I am absolutely looking forward to this.
I'm looking forward to it, but not as much as I was before Lego Horizon was officially announced. As fun as this looks it still seems to be single player. As much as they say it wasn't designed for PSVR it doesn't look like they took advantage of that by adding in the option of a 2nd player like Sackboy Adventures.
So while I will play this at some point, unless they announce 2 player story co-op it will probably be awhile. 2 player co-op would be day 1.
60fps. So happy to see that note. Maybe it's not a huge deal, but I feel like Sony does a fantastic job of giving us at least an option of 60fps.
@Pepsiman_100
Playroom does things with the DualSence that have not been equalled, in any creative way, by any other game, 1st or 3rd party.
Looks superb and yes heavily influenced by Nintendo. They even have Mario-esque green hills!
Whatever I’m day 1 on this one 😁
@NoHope no it is fact no platformer beats 64 and that’s official 🤣
@waynesworld If it relies that much on the DualSense, than I find it very unlikely that Sony would risk of ruining the (potentially) very good image of this game.
@get2sammyb for me the bigger levels in 64 beat the smaller ones in galaxy not to mention full 360 camera control in 64 and “proper” traditional Mario setting.
Also I doubt there will ever be a time in gaming again where the amazement of something like true 3D movement being felt for the first time will happen.
64 created the path for all to follow and even galaxy didn’t top it imo just because 64 was so revolutionary. I realise I have some super strong rose tinted glasses on though typing this! 🤣
Day one purchase.
A lot of Mario lovers here. I think most ps owners have a Nintendo console on the side. Astro bot has a lot of potential to become a ps icon, but Mario is already reinventing itself for over 30+ years.... that's hard to beat
@get2sammyb
Yeah of course several Nintendo platformers, however I excluded them. I just wanted to hear some opinions and recommendations.
I love Astro Bot and looking forward to play it, my niece is also very exited about the game.
@Ralizah
I think I have those games in my huge games archive (can't call it backlog anymore) I will try them. Thanks for the tip.
@Dodoo
If you have the power to declare things offical, can you bring Sony to remake SOCOM II, much appreciated. ^^
@NoHope The remakes on PS4 are even better IMO. The originals are still excellent, but as with many old platformers, the dated controls can take a bit to get adjusted to.
I call mine my library. Calling it a backlog makes it feel like work to get through or something!
People need to support this. If this fails to sell, then nobody and I repeat NOBODY can complain if they only get generic superhero games and walking ''sad'' simulator games on the system.
I know for a fact I'll give up on the Sony name AND its fanbase if this game sells poorly.
@Maubari
While I can understand what you're saying, (because there has been a lot of derision regarding the current output), no one owes this industry a living. No one is obliged to buy a game just because it bucks current trends.
That being said I'm sure it will do quite well amongst your more discerning gamer. Question is, is it the kind of game that the mass market will pick up?
Oh yeah its going to be a incredible game.word up son
@Mustoe Probably not. Playstation gamers (unfortunately) tend to play only ''mature and cool'' games like God of War and Spider Man. They think games like Littlebigplanet and Astro Bot are too childish for them.. ALOT of them think that way; that's why games like Knack, Gravity Rush and even Sly Cooper are no longer around.. Because the sheeple only care for the ''biggest and most beautiful'' games.
They don't appreciate small games anymore
F*cking Game of the year. 🤪
@Maubari
I'd say that's fair. Never really held that view myself, but I was never part of the "cool clique". A good game is a good game. One day I might be blowing sh*t up on Quake, the next playing A Short Hike. Depends entirely on my mood.
@Mustoe I used to be like that too, but nowadays I need to play ''kiddy'' games to prevent my mind from going... places.
Dragon Age and Mass Effect are really the only ''non kiddy'' games I play - though I'm thinking about trying out the Horizon franchise sometime soon as well. Not sure though
@NoHope 🤣 I’ll see what I can do but I’m making no promises 🤣
I can already see myself crying once I'm done with this game. That is what getting old feels like, you already mourn the good times before they even happen.
NO. 🙄
I think other 3rd party 3D platformer games on PS5 are better choice for me.
Let's say Kao the Kangaroo, Smurfs Mission Vileaf, The Smurfs 2: The Prisoner of the Green Stone, Klonoa, Pac-Man, etc.
Going to pre-order this. The astro playroom is fantastic.
@Maubari
Give A Short Hike a try. Very relaxing and can be completed in hour or so.
@Kidfunkadelic83 been trying to find this out myself, haven't been able to get any info on it. would be so thrilled to be able to play this with a partner
Edit: preorder has it listed as one player if that’s to be believed
@Pepsiman_100 Returnal would like to disagree with you! 🤪
Hope I am dead wrong but this kind of out-of-the-blue pre-game hype usually leads to something like a ~7 score. I'd rather you underplay a game and then me get excited because it's an 8.
Super excited. Hopefully this is just the beginning for full length Astro Bot games.
This is definitely one of my most anticipated games. Playroom is still one of my favorite PS5 games, so I have such high hopes for this.
Hrmm I'm still not convinced... I'll need to see more of this one.
@Ralizah
Spyro Reignited Trilogy - I found it in my library / archive ^^
I have so many games, I will never be able to finish them all, but I still pull the trigger on sales.
@Dodoo
Oh my, if this ever happens, I would be in gamer heaven.
I'd agree actually. The footage alone made me go wait they have many different bits of gadgets/gear. YES. The pacing and the gear alone makes me go oh this game is perfect. The past Astro games have shown a lot of greatness and this furthers it in the right ways. This is a game we need to succeed. Or else as fair as Lego Horizon is I think it also makes the market even more clear.
I mean to me Splatoon 2's campaign had a good use of little but well spread use of the weapons for puzzle platforming besides the core moveset. Yet Foamstars while multiplayer had 2 modes and a business model, yet lacking modes I have posted at least 10+ times already they could have done but didn't. Mechanical depth matters if your maps/story aren't good enough. Yet messaging stories I don't care about (or care less about because the game is boring to play) and basic moves rule modern gaming and it bores me to death.
The technique/structure I see gets muddled or dumbed down while Astro is full of personality in it's worlds and it's mechanics, HOW HARD IS THAT GAME DEVELOPERs stop pushing eh worlds/story and offer personality or mechanical depth.
It screams Japan thinking about how to approach this game well which is awesome. Western teams can but they have different goals in mind and while some are good, some lack in ways to compel me. It varies from game to game.
To me Ratchet is a story 3rd person shooter it's gadgets in Rift Apart were ok but not exciting, it's why I found the gameplay other than Blizar to be so boring and I quit playing. Watch Useless Podcast old Ratchet devs play it and others play it and I still found it boring.
Sackboy does a fair job but it isn't the same.
Astrobot feels like what I want out of an old school game but modern the colour is well presented per region, personality in levels is excellent to set the scene but the platforming while not much is varied of sliding, swinging, the gloves to box boss fights, the grapple is fair.
Give me mechanics over plot sometimes. It's why I'll play a puzzle game over some story. I can test my brain, my memory of past puzzles in games and I get that 3D obstacle course puzzle fix. Not match 3 or falling blocks I'm not into those. Some flash game formats I don't mind but many on PSP of Crush (aka Super Paper Mario mechanic on PSP and released before that came out on Wii), Cube, Exit, Mercury, Practical Intelligence Quotient 1 & 2 as examples. I mean Devil Dice on PS1/Bombastic I think the PS2 entry is called.
Spyro is fine but to me the game became more about minigames/open world playground logic that is fun while most modern open worlds are boring. I prefer Spyro 1 because it's an obstacle course of secrets and main levels. Even the side areas cut in the prototypes as simple as they are I was like WHOA that's cool sad they cut it. More than I was Elora's dialogue cut in Spyro 2 for the level openings to set the scene.
Technique/structure appeals to me more.
It's why Gravity Rush, Sunset Overdrive or Infamous Second Son's side missions appealed to me more and are my favourites the playground approach not the holiday destination and generic character RPG quests approach.
It's what I want to see that many Indie platformers suffer from. Being a Mario/Sonic/Spyro/Crash/Banjo clone but only on the surface. Clive and Wrench is simple. The moveset isn't as good as Banjo of varied things the characters gain of moves. Yet it has many inspirations and the first level is clear on the bookshelf title spoofs but the game itself is very boring because the level design is fine but the context/structure is very boring. There isn't much to keep me excited. Other games have theirs but to me platforming/racing Indies suck. Some do stand out but many suck. Heck seeing Hades clones was just sad to me. They have some differences but not enough. Gaming is too close copy cat these days.
5-6th gen things were new but even then the competition had mechanical depth. The left behinds still are fresh to this day. Even those in racing rewind systems dumbed theirs down to what it is today yet the introductionary game (that I know of) had more depth than just that to that system and other systems. Sigh.
It's why I look back at older games, what's fresh or good today even if clunky in other areas. Why it's easy to see what possibilities from some basis are still able to be expanded but aren't explored.
Nowadays it's gone and TOO close of competition it's boring because they aren't really good competition. They can be or feel fan game close AAA or Indies depending where you look. Some stick out others don't. Palworld is inspired by popular things, succeeds. No Man's Sky or Nightinggale good approaches by veterans. Nightinggale might as well not exist. It's a great game that to me the Minecraft Mystcraft book/card use is amazing but that's the thing stand out feature. Most people would have never heard of it. Veterans can go that way of new space, new ideas, or keep to what they were doing like a Yooka/Judas/Bloodstained/Splitterhead and may do well.
Many others feel similar very not exciting in the movesets with like 1 move. I get that from 7th gen shooters, 1 cool mechanic and I ignore the story/setting/level design because they are so generic.
Just what the doctor ordered. 😁
When counting psvr1 titles through backward compatibility, Astro bot rescue mission might still be a very, very strong contender for the best 3D platformer on PS5, which also is more 3D than 3D on a flat screen.
I want a couch co-op split screen ala Lego games, so my two sons could play it together.
I am very excited for this game! We just know it'll be great!
@Dodoo i agree. Imo 64 is the greatest 3d platformer out there. It was and still is a joyous game and imo SM odyssey absolutely sucked in comparison. Boring levels filled with too many collectables.
Utterly adored Astro Bot Playroom. Seems like a good successor of the 3D-platformer poster hero lineage:
If it's anything like the last one it's going to be amazing! Feel it's coming at just the right time too for me getting a bit sick of all the souls like
@NeonPizza that's a good list
@MikeOrator agreed. I think most games I've played only seem to do stuff with the triggers and thats it
@ear_wig Ahh. Returnal is pretty dang great too. I'd still put playroom above it tho
I re-installed Astro’s Playroom and have been enjoying the soundtrack quite a bit. Astro Bot looks to be something special.
better then mario games?
Okay😂
guess aloooot of people haven't play mario odyssey yet.
but i agree i absolute love astro, i will definetly buy this game day one
Mario Odyssey was great. Best part was the side scrolling sections. I think Astrobot will be better!
I hope so, Sony first party is mostly in development hell right now, they badly need a W
