The Assassin's Creed series got its start with a heavy emphasis on stealth, and while it stuck with that formula for many games, it eventually pivoted to a full-on action RPG. Whether you're into the earlier titles, the larger-scale RPGs, or both, this shift has resulted in a somewhat split fanbase. Assassin's Creed Shadows, with its duo of protagonists, feels as though it's addressing this issue head on, with the pair representing these two contrasting approaches.
In a live gameplay presentation, we were shown three different ways of tackling the same assassination. Set in Japan's Azuchi-Momoyama period, a time of great political turmoil, our pair of heroes are tasked with entering a vast castle town to take down an oppressive daimyo. Once you're inside, you're able to begin the mission with either character: Naoe, a nimble shinobi who's best suited to the series' classic stealth approach, or Yasuke, a powerful samurai who's all about the action.
Naoe's gameplay is very reminiscent of older Assassin's Creed titles; she's using a grapple hook to reach rooftops, clambering over walls, and striking from the shadows to take out her target without raising the alarm. This more thoughtful approach is aided by equipment like kunai, which she can use to extinguish lights to stay hidden, and options such as non-lethal takedowns. This portion of the demonstration felt like the AC we remember, albeit in a gorgeous new setting.
Of course, Yasuke's approach through the castle town is very different. His armour and larger stature means he can't flit around like Naoe can, so instead he has to walk the main path, which means ploughing through a whole bunch of baddies. Using his tetsubo, a large blunt weapon adorned with spikes, Yasuke's combat starts off extremely brutal, with slow, heavy blows that smash enemies into the ground with brutal force. Finishers are particularly violent, with heads popping off shoulders and blood staining every surface. He also wields a rifle for some long-range takedowns.
Being a samurai, though, he does of course use his trusty katana, which is a different flavour of combat. It's a fast and efficient weapon, and duels against other samurai will put your swordsmanship to the test. Whatever weapon you wield, enemies will come at you with red and blue attacks you must dodge and parry respectively, which leads to opportunities for some punishment. Yasuke's more overt style of play feels more in line with the more recent games in the series.
In the third run through this mission, we return to Naoe to see what she can do when she goes loud. As well as a sword, she also makes use of a kusarigama, which is a sickle on the end of a chain. This is perfect for crowd control, something that works well with her character if she's just trying to escape. She can also dish out a fast flurry of sword swipes, and uses her agility to get the best of larger foes.
While Naoe may sound like a more versatile character, then, Yasuke is also afforded ways to sneak around, if the conditions are right. AC Shadows features a fully dynamic, procedural weather system, and it has an effect on how well enemies can see and hear you. The perfect example is a heavy storm, with torrential rain and thunder claps aplenty. With this on your side, Yasuke can use the rain and thunder to conceal his movements.
For the majority of the game, you'll be able to choose which of these two characters to play as, while some story missions will be tied to one or the other. From our perspective, both of them seemed really fun in their own ways, and it's that freedom of choice that has us most excited for AC Shadows. If you grow tired of one, you can swap to the other, enjoying the best of both worlds. For that reason, this looks to be the most interesting Assassin's Creed in a while.
Assassin's Creed Shadows takes PS5 to feudal Japan on 15th November, 2024. Are you excited for this one? Sneak up on the comments section below.

Ubi Catering buffet.......
@anon_pel222 Sad thing about a buffet is that, while there is a lot to choose from, no dish is ever that memorable.
@Kidfried I sorta know what you mean, but I love a GOOD buffet. And I think there is room for both it, fast food and fine dining.
Isn't this exactly what they already did with Syndicate? Kind of surprised they went with that again, but I'm glad. I'll be playing Evie....err Naoe. I hated ACIII with it's push to action combat. Origins fixed it...then they went and messed it up again. AC is a stealth series. It should have always been a stealth series. I thought we learned this lesson when they tried to turn Sam Fisher into Rambo? Yasuke's play is so boring and generic, God of Yore. But I loved what they showed of Naoe's play. Right down to the ringing alarm bells after the hit, it brings back so much of AC1 into the game.
It's great that you get to choose your preferred character for most missions.
Playing as Naoe looks like it’ll be what I want out of AC in 2024.
Say what you will, but AC is such a reliable series for the quality of gaming it provides. It’s never Game of the Year, but it’s always a good time. I don’t mind a series that is consistently 7/10-8/10 tier. At least you know if you’ll like it.
Stealth…. or action?
I'm guessing it will still be a long game. I like the huge AC rpg titles but I'm sure that some of that old school crowd will complain about the 50ish hour (or more) playtime to beat the main story.
Considering that Ghost of Tsushima allowed you to play as both samurai and ninja rather fluidly, it just seems a bit of of a step back for AC basically making you commit to one play style on each mission.
If the deal is that the two characters exist to cover the bases of the two types of player, that is clearly an acknowledgment of player preferences, and therefore it would be a bad move to force players to use both.
That’s key for me and whether I buy this.
do you select a character and play the whole game as that character or the story make you play as each character at different points?
Can't wait to play this on PC with mods to change one specific character......
@AdamNovice now if they would’ve chosen Hattori Hanzo as the solo protagonist, you COULD choose to be both. But Hanzo was already the protagonist in an AC novel.
So turns out it wasn’t a novel, but an AC card game.
@DualWielding you choose at the beginning of missions from what I’ve seen from gameplay footage. I imagine when roaming the open-world you’ll be able to choose on the fly.
I think it is one of the best things added to the immersion of the series in a long time. Yasuke cannot stealth as he is absolutely massive, unless there is zero visibility weather conditions, and Naoe can't just rush in and tank hits and smash people around because she is small and nimble. This leads to emergent gameplay opportunities and problems to solve, whereas in the last few you can pretty much do everything on autopilot because "game"
"heavy emphasis on stealth, and while it stuck with that formula for many games"
To be fair, that "emphasis on stealth" in the pre-RPG games was more a case of just "many stealth-forced missions that fail on detection".
But yeah, while Naoe looks fun and seems to have a lot of tools up her sleeve for both sides, Yasuke looks rather dull and like little more than a reskin of Eivor-minus-stealth. And so far seems to talk far too much in fluent Cliché. I expect, like Jacob before him, I would relegate him to "only played if/when the game makes it mandatory".
Just that gameplay alone showed more promise than Ghost of Midshima. I'm hypeeed.
That this requires a mandatory online connection just to install it killed any chance of me buying the game until it's in a deep sale. And I'm talking about a tenner tops.
I should be grateful to the games industry and it's continued push toward mandatory online requirements, though. It's saving me a small fortune. 😊
The nice thing about the great game that was Ghost of Tsushima, was that you could switch Jin’s loadout which could drastically change the gameplay style, you can go from stealth, to sniper, to tank quite easily. This will force players to make their decisions a bit more wiser and play up the character’s strengths.
Interesting move. Although historically, shinobi and samurai were often one and the same.
Someday I hope the AC team can make a hitman style game but with Assassin's Creed's unique trappings. Replayable sandbox stages sounds like way more fun than what they've already been doing for years.
Looking forward to this one, my most anticipated game for the rest of the year!
I wouldn't be surprised if Ubisoft studies which of the characters the player base uses more of to help determine future titles gameplay style.
Naoe looks more like the type of AC gameplay I look for.
When there is character creation I usually go female but when forced to play a curated protagonist I prefer male, unfortunately no Japanese male here, Welp.
@WhiteRabbit Wait there was a novel?
@pharos_haven I thought there was, now when I try to find it I’m not finding anything, which really has me scratching my head now.
Ugh, he was in some AC card game. What a waste of a great character.
I will play as both. It will be quite cool to see it in action.
Looking forward to this more than anything else if I’m honest.
I definitely plan to play as Naoe most. She just looks much more like what I want out of an AC game. That said, I might switch to Yasuke once in a while if I'm just not in the stealth mood on a random afternoon.
I see so many people constantly bringing Ghost and poo-pooing Shadows and just gotta ask...why? Ghost was a fantastic game and Shadows looks fantastic too. Why not just embrace both of them?
Plus as great as Ghost is(literally one of my favorite PS4 games), Shadows has a lot more going on under the hood with the whole scout system, the weather system, the Shinobi hideout system, the RPG mechanics, etc. I really don't think the two games are going to be as comparable as people are making it out to be...which is fine! Just embrace them both for their own different strengths and weaknesses I say.
Highly doubt it but try and surprise me.
My brain is melting. This looks too epic.
Looks great! Glad they are letting players dabble with both styles. I for one really appreciate the call back to the early games with Mirage this past year, but I can see the fun in wrecking with a samurai too.
@themightyant I'm a slut for a good breakfast buffet
I'm not usually into the samurai thing (I'm the one guy that didn't love Ghost of Tsushima) but this looks pretty cool, and looks very different from Valhalla, which I'm happy about. I skipped Mirage just because of how burnt out on the series that Valhalla made me. I don't ever want to see that game again.
While I don't mind Naoe's look .I Think i'll just stick with Ghost.
Sounds good to me. May lead to replay missions as the other characters.
@Kidfried that's exactly my point friend.....same problem was with Valhalla...but Valhalla gave them billion dollars...AC series is now another COD
@anon_pel222 guilty. I paid for map icon unlocks on the cash shop when Valhalla launched.
Must have taken me 15 hours just to get to Britain, as I was collecting every single tiny little thing in the first snow zone, right down to the smallest faintest little orange dot on the map.
I never feasted on the game, as I never got that into it. But like a buffet, I kept dipping back in.
Almost 4 years later, I must be 50 hours in, am still playing it, but have gotten nowhere in the story!
It’s almost like it’s become World of Warcraft rather than COD, where I dip in and out once a week for 20 minutes.
Is it true that this isn't the actual Yasuke? Sounds dirty really, him being tokenised like that. At least the historical period is about right. I mean the real guy's bio is likely altered anyway. A legit truthful as possible story on him & Nobunaga would be really cool.
@WhiteRabbit I never changed Jin's loadout. Didn't need to.
@somnambulance this! It’s like comfort food
@Mustoe do you not have an internet connection?
@Boucho11
Yes, (well, not currently ), but regardless I refuse to play ball with any games company that demands a mandatory online connection - irrespective of what it's for. If you're happy to then more power to you.
@Mustoe but sure that’s a case of cutting your nose off to spite your face. Unfortunately that’s the way things are going, more and more games requiring an online connection. To miss out on a game that you would enjoy because of this, when you have ability to do so
...or disappoint both.
@Boucho11
It's a luxury pastime. I rarely buy new games and can happily live without them. If I decide to miss out based on the principles I choose then I'm happy to.
I'll be sticking with Ghost of Tsushima which respects the culture of Japan. I was watching the gameplay trailer which was underwhelming and my wife spat out her tea when she walked in and the hip hop soundtrack kicked in at the boss fight. I don't know what they were thinking...
