Let’s try this again, eh? Sony originally released a batch of PS2 games on the PS4, but they were buggy, performed poorly, and lacked quality of life features. Now, with its well-established PS1 and PSP emulator, it’s giving the strategy another go – and including the releases in its PS Plus Premium subscription. But how are its efforts so far?
The first three games available are platformer Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, globe-trotting adventure game Tomb Raider Legend, and vehicular combat title Star Wars: The Clone Wars. All three releases can be played on either PS5 and PS4, and enjoyed as part of the platform holder’s top-tier subscription – or purchased a la carte.
The wrappers will feel immediately familiar to anyone who’s played an emulated PS1 or PSP title recently: there are four graphics filters, the ability to switch between NTSC or PAL versions (you’ll want the NTSC option for better performance), and a toggle to turn on "enhancements". This appears to enable and disable the Rewind feature, presumably because it’s draining a lot of computational overhead.
Rewind is obviously an excellent quality of life addition, because it makes some of these retro releases a bit more palatable, especially when checkpoints were a little more punishing back in the day. There’s also the option to create quick saves, which means you’re not at the mercy of the game’s own save system if you want to put down your DualSense and call it a day.
Despite the promise of uprendering, all three titles look like they’re running in their original resolution to our untrained eye, which means they look a little smeary and unclear. While you could argue this preserves the original experience, it’s a little disappointing we’re not getting a higher resolution option, as it can really make a difference to the overall visual quality.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is still a fantastically presented platformer, but it does feel a little dated compared to its PS2 successors. This author has always preferred the variety of the latter two titles, although many prefer the purity of the inaugural game. Its combination of stealth and action is excellent, though.
Tomb Raider Legend, meanwhile, may be the standout of the three. This Crystal Dynamics entry is a reimagining of the franchise, and put Lara Croft back on the map after the dismal Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. This game actually still holds up pretty well, with great platforming and level design, and some cool mechanics, like the grappling hook.
Elsewhere, Star Wars: The Clone Wars blends vehicular combat with on-foot action. It’s perhaps at its worst when you’re taking control of human characters like Mace Windu, but the explosive action improves when you’re piloting one of the franchise’s famous vehicles.
It’s a good start for PS2 emulation, then, but we’re still somewhat disappointed by the muddy resolution. While it’s important these games maintain their original look, we had hoped for some better uprendered to tidy up the visuals just a touch. This emulator is much more fully featured than its predecessor, however, so hopefully this is the start of a string of classics making their way to modern consoles.
Which PS2 games are you hoping return on PS5 and PS4 as part of this new emulation initiative? Pick your poison in the comments section below.

5 minutes of Sly made me fire up my PS3 to play the HD collection. Not that I expected this version to be superior, but maybe close enough? Nope, that did not happen. Glad it's on PS5 no matter what.
I convert PS1/PS2 etc to play on my PS4 and TR Legend is a pain to get going.
At least I can play it on the PS5 now
I'm hoping they update the older PS2 games they released on PS4. They are a buggy mess when playing on PS5.
It’s a shame they’re not a higher resolution and 60fps. It should be possible with a bit more care. Tomb Raider Legend is still awesome though!
Sly woooohooo. The king is back.
@get2sammyb
Yes, but hopefully this time they compensate with a greater library. Fingers crossed 🤞.
I'd pay good money for the Xenosaga Trilogy playable on PS5.
I'd love to see a detailed comparison of these versions against the PS3 remasters. The remastering of Sly Cooper was excellent on PS3 and it seems from this article that it remains the definitive way to play the game. I also remember it being fairly forgiving, so probably isn't one of the titles that most needs the 'rewind' function.
Meanwhile, I have the Tomb Raider HD Trilogy unplayed on PS3 and am tempted by convenience of playing Legend on my PS5 (I have premium) but suspect the PS3 version may be technically superior (I think it's actually a 7th gen version rather than a 6th gen version as is the case here).
Still pretty much nothing in comparison to the thousands of games on those consoles
There’s no reason for a lack of resolution boost, when anyone with a Steamdeck (or even a decent computer) can emulate and get 4x the resolution —or more.
In a way it's not surprising there is no resolution boost since they didn't do anything with the PS1 games. That being said PS2 games really do benefit from these things more than PS1 games and at least 1080p should have been an option.
I'm just thrilled to have PS2 games again. Plus with Sony patching trophies into the already released third party classics, it gets me excited.
If that's awesome I'm going to have to redefine the definition of what provides awe 😁
@EvenStephen7 exactly. Always seems odd that sonys emulators arent as good as the ones freely available...
It’s a shame because on Xbox Series S I can play PS2 games in 4K with texture replacement mods. Surely PS5 can uprender these to a similar degree.
PS5 Pro is needed to achieve resolution boost for PS2 games
Happy about this as PS2 had some bangers, still I would argue with the statement
“ While you could argue this preserves the original experience,”
I don’t think people can argue that as the games would have looked much better on a CRT TV than on a 4K it wasn’t built around. They really should be up rendered at the least.
@Czar_Khastik I don’t think so when Series S can do it.
@get2sammyb Can you explain what those visual filters do? Especially Classic Arcade and Modern Arcade. Also, does the Default setting use integer scaling to produce sharp pixels, or is it a blurry mess?
+1 for nice use of "a la carte"
@Angelus3K He was clearly being sarcastic about needing a PS5 Pro for PS2 games, how did you not catch that?
@Angelus3K @tangyzesty Fellow commenter didn't read my username
@Czar_Khastik haha my bad
I've had a blast on Sly and I think it looks great. Plays superb as well. I'll try Tomb Raider Legend at some point too
Got to be honest, I’m a bit disappointed actually. Was really excited for Sly and TR Legend but the resolution on these is terrible. I’ve played quite a few of the PS1 and PSP classics, and the up-rendering on those really helped. The PS2 ones seem to have none of that. Legend is very blurry to the point it’s difficult to see in places. Can only hope these will be patched at some point to boost their resolution/definition.
So Sly and Legend are still best played on ps3 than ps5...
@zenszulu The PS1 games were upconverted to 1440p. The sprite games looked horrible but the polygon games looked lovely.
No.... no no no no no
I wonder if there's some complexity with integrating the emulation onto consoles. It's all well and good saying on PC it can do "4k 60fps" but PC can brute force that. On console it not only has to run at least at it's base performances but it also has to have the console's features such as trophies, quick resume, take screenshots, remote play and share play. All that could add unknown complexities to the conversion.
It's a shame you can't put the disc in and play These old games
Really nice we're finally able to have PS2 games. I do hope they fix those older games from the PS4... and also give some of those games platinum trophies (some didn't).
Tomb Raider Legend seems to follow the PS3's trophies, which was pretty easy to get.
So far Legend looks best played with the Modern filter. Default has the best lighting, but it reveals how blurry the textures are. Meanwhile, Classic Arcade & Modern Arcade filters makes game environment look lively, but there's a distinct blur over Lara's face and her character model. It's disorienting when having her move around.
Editing in to realize something. CD had chosen to remove the option to play the game in 4:3 and locked it to 16:9 display. It's a strange choice since the game was ported without any visual changes but they consciously removed that option when PS1 games allow you to switch between the two aspect ratios.
Been playing sly all day and it’s great. So happy they made a new emulator.
Just play Tomb Raider Legend on a Series X|S via backwards compatibility. It's great!
480p for $30 is a decision. I’m not being funny but PCSX2 could push beyond that on my 2010 Mac at the time. It surely cannot be this difficult to make an emulator that upscales.
@AdamNovice It's actually the opposite; consoles have resources reserved for the system and all its features, so developers know exactly what's available for their game. On PC, this is not the case and the user's system settings could adversely impact performance. However, the user could also improve performance of games by manually optimizing OS settings. For this reason Windows has Game mode which prioritizes the PC's resources for games. There's no brute forcing that PC can do that PS5 can't, unless you're referring to overclocking.
Take for example, how the modder Illusion got games such as The Order: 1886 and RDR2 running at locked 60fps on PS5 by modifying basic API calls, yet Sony has still not implemented this. Microsoft on the other hand has done exactly this through their backwards compatibility program. They created patches for games without needing access to the code; all they needed was the go ahead from the games' publishers. Sony could do this, but they choose not to. It's the same with their emulation efforts.
The PS5 is more than capable of PS2 emulation with all the enhancements we see on PC and other devices. It's all dependant on the emulator they're utilizing and if Sony or Implicit Conversions want to support the enhancements.
I hope that they also bring this back to the existing PS2 titles - I am still regretting the Jak & Daxter trilogy on PS4 which is atrocious compared to the HD release on PS3.
Still unrealistically waiting for Small Soldiers from PS1 to come on Premium. It’ll never happen but I had fond memories of playing it with my brothers 😂
480p? Splendid!
Edit after playing Sly for 5 minutes: It actually does look like it's around 720p to my eyes. There has been a 2x upscale I think.
The CRT filters (Classic/Modern Arcade) look quite nice to me. Much better looking than the implementation for PS1 and PSP games (CRT filter for PSP doesn't even make sense, needs an LCD filter).
Well if they release these at the same rate as the PS1 games we'll have about 20 by the end of days 🤣
i’ll just keep playing on my ps3 . native hardware > emulation
@RedAngel_Dragnet I'd be very happy if I could play Resident Evil Code Veronica X and Max Payne with save states and rewind.
Playing through Tomb Raider Legend and its not bad actually. Genuinely enjoying myself. I'm hoping we get Anniversary in the next batch of games and then eventually the EA James Bond trilogy of Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, and Everything or Nothing.
I've just put Sly on, and the motion blur hurts my eyes!
Wishlist of PS2 games:
Atelier Iris 2
Kya: Dark Lineage
Escape from Monkey island
Timesplitters 2+3
Colosseum: Road to Freedom
Half Life
Shadow of Rome
Shadow of Memories
That'll do off the top of my head!
Getaway please!
I'm hoping they honour previous ps2 classic purchases like they did with previous ps1 classic purchases, I bought some bangers back in the day on ps3 - persona 3 and 4, GTA liberty / Vice city stories, the warriors, bully, katamari damacy. Give me my old collection with trophies and I'll buy many many more, and bring us disc support!
@Netbean as much as i'd love it, since i still have a ton of ps2 discs , is its not happening. i mean even xbox couldn't play those games off the disc , it just activated a download for the game.
Played a little bit of Tomb Raider Legend. It's great to have it available and I like the game so will be playing to get the trophies, but, the Xbox 360 version on Series X is the better option for anybody who hasn't played the game before.
I’ve never played worse emulated garbage than "Psychonauts" on PS5. Definitely won’t be touching any other PS2-games, no matter how hard Sony tries to fix that awful emulator.
I can play PS2 Tomb Raider Legend in 4K 60fps using AetherSX2 on my phone.
I can understand the 'preservation' aspect for keeping it as but I don't see why if bedroom programmers can create a PS2 emulator that has a range of FPS & Resolution options, the boffins at Sony HQ can't.
Played some Sly Cooper today, and it plays well on PS5. The image quality isn't perfect, and no matter what visual filters you use, the image is going to be a bit soft. I'd really appreciate it if they added integer scaling as an option.
That said, it's a good game and you quickly forget about image quality when playing it. I do think that keeping the internal resolution at 480p is the way to go since the artwork was designed around it. But they really should improve the scaling method.
I'd like to see Burnout 1-3 as well as revenge and dominator and also throw in Tomb Raider Anniversary and Underworld. Would be happy if all were the PS2 versions!
