Promised Consort Radahn: Boss Fight Strategy

Starscourge Radahn is back, sort of, and he presents the final boss encounter of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This time, he's without his trusty steed and looks more like a human than a monster — though, he's still unusually tall. Since you've already overcome the first encounter with Radahn in the base game, you'll already be somewhat familiar with his moves. Some of them carry over — albeit on a smaller scale — alongside new ones. Before passing through the fog door, take note you can once again summon Pureblood Knight Ansbach as long as you talked to him at the bottom of the staircase. Unfortunately, he's nowhere near as useful this time around and is very much mortal, but he's still worth having in the encounter — more as a distraction than anything else.

Other key points to have in mind are it's possible to fill up proc the Blood meter of Radahn, which is incredibly useful for taking big chunks of damage out of his HP bar; you'll soon learn your standard attacks do little more than tiny chip damage on their own. Combined with Pureblood Knight Ansbach and your Mimic Tear Ashes all fighting at once, you can start to make some proper progress.

At the very beginning of the fight — as soon as you pass through the fog door — Radahn will more than likely charge straight at you with a sort of purple fireball attack. It's fairly easy to dodge, but it does mean you need to wait a second or two before calling in your Mimic Tear Ashes. From there, the boss clasps his two gigantic swords in both hands, swinging them in unison for some combo moves that are equally telegraphed as they are devastating. We suggest dedicating a few runs to getting the timing down of his standard attacks, as you'll avoid taking a lot of damage once you've mastered it. They're very heavy blows that can kill your attempt if you get caught out by them, but it's worth investing the time so you can thrive in a future run.

On top of standard swings and slashes, Radahn will frequently take to the skies and call in a volley of purple rocks that he launches at whoever has his attention at the time. If it's you, time the roll correctly and you'll come out the other side unscathed. He also stomps on the floor to knock you off balance and deal a bit of damage.

When you take off roughly one-third of his health, a cutscene will play and Radahn will move into his second phase, now known as Radahn, Consort of Miquella. While the boss shares the same health pool as the first phase — and so it's already lost half its HP — this is a considerably tougher part of the overall encounter. Almost all of the time, Radahn will begin the phase by charging up a gigantic AoE attack in front of him that can take out almost your entire health bar. It's followed up by Light spears from the heavens, and if enough hit you, this one move could kill you immediately. As soon as you see Radahn charging it up, sprint away immediately.

The lobbing of purple rocks from the air returns, but the attack is now generally followed up by Light projections of himself shot at you repeatedly. It's possible to get caught up in these and lose your health all at once, so try and dodge out of the way as they arrive. One other move you must look out for is when Radahn grabs you and Miquella mutters some words to you. No damage is actually dealt by this interaction, but if you're grabbed a second time during the fight, it'll automatically end and instead of the screen saying "You Died", it says "Heart Stolen". Either way, you've lost.

This second phase is where Pureblood Knight Ansbach becomes pretty much useless. He slowly walks around the battlefield and rarely closes the space between him and the boss quickly. If you want to get him involved, you'll need to drag the boss over to him by getting his attention and then sprinting to Ansbach's location. Otherwise, he's just not going to engage much. Because of this, we strongly recommend being as aggressive as possible in the first phase so your Mimic Tear Ashes can go into the second part with as much health as possible — two-thirds HP is suggested.

This way, they can deal damage and hold the boss' aggro for a bit longer while you continue to deal Bleed damage and land general swipes. How much you've levelled up your Shadow Realm Blessings will come into play here — so you can compare, we had our Scadutree Blessing at 12 and Revered Spirit Ash Blessing at 8 when we successfully beat Radahn. This is going to be a very difficult encounter that will more than likely take you hours of attempts, but once you overcome Radahn, the main story of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will be complete.
