Sony Bend community manager Kevin McAllister has apologised to the passionate fanbase built around PS4 favourite Days Gone after he feels the community was lent "false hope" by misleading comments from the studio's former staff members and a deceptive headline from an outlet reporting on those tweets.
John Garvin, the former director and writer of Days Gone, responded to queries from the game's community earlier this week about the possibility of a Days Gone sequel. It's already public knowledge Sony Bend is now working on a new IP, but Garvin responded by saying he and Jeff Ross (also formerly of Sony Bend) had a "full outline" for a sequel, and even intended to turn the series into a trilogy. Garvin claims to have had a "script, outline, map [and] concept art" for a pitch before he was let go by Sony.
The fact Sony decided not to go ahead with a Days Gone 2 was detailed in a Bloomberg report in 2021, instead opting for the team to work on something new. This is common knowledge amongst hardcore Days Gone fans, so what John Garvin had to say wasn't particularly surprising. "Maybe in a couple of years when the IP is gathering dust and they're sure they're done with it, they'd license it to other devs... but again, not holding my breath," he hopes.
However, where the problem lies — and ultimately why the current community manager felt the need to apologise — is with a GamingBible headline that picked up Garvin's comments, and simply read: "Days Gone trilogy plans confirmed by developer." Suggesting the current Sony Bend staff has more Days Gone titles in production, community manager Kevin McAllister believes the "false hope" lent to fans is unfair.
He tweeted: "I apologize to our Days Gone community for continuously getting fed false hope and poor information by people looking for likes. It’s not fair to you all. We are currently working on a new IP, and when we have actual news to share it will come from our studio." He then continues: "All these type of headlines originate from previous developers, which puts us in a bad position. Like I said, people need likes. Time to move on."
John Garvin and Jeff Ross have spoken publicly at surprising length about what a Days Gone sequel might have looked like, with mentions of a more dynamic open world, swimming, and better animals. Though, after comments from Garvin about how the game received a disappointing critical reception thanks to "woke reviewers", the current Sony Bend team distanced itself from the former director.
As for what Sony Bend is actually working on, community manager Kevin McAllister called it the "best Bend game yet". What's your take on this? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I wish Garvin and Ross would let it go with talking publicly about Days Gone 2.
crazy that a game that has "apparently" sold 9 million copies wont get a sequel
Any amazing game of AAA campaign quality from a Sony studio would extremely welcome right now.
It’s a shame it isn’t getting a sequel. It was a solid, if unspectacular 8/10 for me.
Story a little meh, little long. But had a pretty good open world and the hordes were good.
Sadly took a little too much criticism for having a white biker protagonist who could be a bit of a d**k
I played it for the first time in May and loved it. A sequel would be warmly welcomed
Garvin and Ross didn't deserve the vilification for GamingBible's irresponsible reporting. It's clear that community manager doesn't like them.
I, for one, enjoyed all of their previous work and would love to see a Days Gone sequel.
That headline from GamingBible is egregious.
He should release the outline so we can see what a possible sequel would have looked like
@PsBoxSwitchOwner solid and unspectacular and a 8, wow, strange rating system mate 😀
Yes, it was a solid 6. But still better than most other open world games. And the bike gameplay is the best one (have to have fuel etc) out there
Those 2 guys on X are pretty annoying by now though
It is a shame he doesn't direct his address to one particular source, as it can be seen as certain Bend developers need to kick down towards former employees that have a passion for a game that 9 million players share.
I don't know who this Kevin McAlister person is, who apparently is "cooking" a new IP up. He might end up estranging some of those 9 million players who'd rather fight zombie hordes. We could have had Days Gone 2 and right now we have no clue as to what will become of Bend.
Bends gonna go from a game that sells 9 million copies to some live service game that could shut down the studio
Bends best game yet? Impressive.
Bubsy 3D is a high bar to hit
Loved Days Gone. Rough around the edges but FUN and the hordes were just great. Real shame the team wasn't allowed to continue the story and push their skills in the same way Naughty Dog did with UC and then UC2. Looking forward to their next game.
It's hilarious how people are using sales of a 5 year old game that has been on sale since the year it was released to justify that it was "good" when the game was one of the worst PS games when it came out (yes ps games are THAT good) and the only one who was talking sales was the ex director who was pissed off because the general opinion was that the game sucked.
The poor sales of Days Gone first year was basically the reason Sony strategy of pc releases changed to release games sooner.
@ShogunRok
I don't know how you manage to read the tweet from John Garvin any other way than what the GamingBible reports. You are out of line by calling it egregious.
John Garvin wrote, and I quote, I can’t speak for @JakeRocket but sure … as you all know, I wrote a cliffhanger into the ending of #daysgone with the full intention of there being a trilogy (NOT just a sequel) I talk about it here youtu.be/ZRlySdBKXsU
So, you have some sort of agenda here assuming you read the article. Care to divulge?
I thought Deacon St John (come on, lads) was one of the worst characters in modern gaming, all that chuntering away to himself was particularly off-putting.
Still not as bad as Aiden Pearce, however.
@Rmg0731 I don't know man, probability is based in facts and the facts are the 2 PS services (GT7 and Helldivers) of the PS all in services age were huge successes so even if Concord fails (and we still don't know if it will, it could be the same Helldivers situation where 1 million is more than enough because these games have a price tag) the probability of the Bend game being a success is higher than it failing so I wouldn't be worried of it shutting down. Now add that they "sold 9 million copies of one game" and the chances for it to shut down are even lower lol.
I wish everyone involved would just move on at this point. I know some people like/miss Days Gone but it's just not happening, which Bend has stated multiple times. For me personally I'm interested in seeing the new stuff they're working on.
@GymratAmarillo Your criticism is wrong. If it was about sales, plenty of games would reach 9 million sales in 5 years. Yet they don't. It seems that once again, critics were wrong about the game considering most people seem to say the game was good and word of mouth ends up being good marketing.
And let's be fair, very few Sony games are as amazing as you make you out. Most are decent cinematic story experiences but that's it.
6/10, nothing it did was original or hadn't been done better elsewhere
It’s an amazing game. Loved it
i need to go back and finish up days gone. i feel like when they patched it up on the ps5 , it made a decent game even better at a locked in 60fps. hopefully we see what they've been working on sooner then later. some one has been working on a new uncharted game , and the 20th anniversary for uncharted is coming up soon.

@zhoont i feel like people think if they keep talking and asking about it , that the door could be open one day for a potential sequel even if its not the game they are currently working on.
@twitchtvpat then those people truly are special, since it's John Garvin and Jeff Ross who are publicly speaking about their past plans for a sequel. You know, plans that didn't go ahead, and by two men that are no longer at Bend
@TruestoryYep days gone from the beginning got the "next big thing" treatment from sony, all the games in that tier (god of war, spiderman, the last of us, uncharted, horizon, ghost of tsushima) has sold more than what Days Gone sold without the help of pc. Days Gone was never intended to be in the sales category of Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, remakes and ports, etc. It's all about budget, expectations and sales at full price, not about the opinion of anyone, not the media, not the people who bought the game when it was $10. My comment about the ex director is because the guy is annoying AF, he talks every chance he has even when doesn't work for Sony anymore and he should be talking about his new games.
Now, if you really think "very few Sony games are as amazing as you make you out. Most are decent cinematic story experiences but that's it" then we are wasting our time here because my comment comes from someone who can see beyond the "OMG that's a movie not a game" agenda. If I wasn't able to see that I wouldn't be here LOL.
@zhoont i mean you aren't wrong , but i feel like if people want a sequel they shouldn't give up either. not saying it will ever happen , i don't think it will happen. but it sounds like sony is investing a lot of money into sony bend's new game , so i'm pretty excited to see what they've been working on.
Days Gone is an excellent game. I double dipped on PC I enjoyed it that much on PlayStation 4. The second ending that hinted to a sequel makes it more of a shame that it'll likely never happen.
@AgentMantis While you may be right, what other game has the horde mechanics? I’m drawing a blank.
Long fart noise. That’s it.
Me as screen writer i would make a prequel of days gone.
its a syphon filter game infiltrating the lab of who is responsible of this mess and many Easter eggs of days gone.
That was one of my favourite games of the last generation, and my favourite Sony title.
It’s an absolute travesty that we aren’t getting a sequel, given all the absolute dross out there.
Different publisher, but imagine what the money spent on Suicide Squad could have done if handed to Bend.
The industry is a mess.
@CrashBandicoat
That's the thing I don't get. Days Gone is a lot better than the much of the, as you put it, absolute dross out there. Sure the basic open world principles are in play at its core, but the delivery and execution is sound. Combined with a great story, the excellent horde mechanic, an effective progression system, great bike physics, solid combat, excellent visuals and superb weather physics (some of the best I've seen) it's a great game, one that drips atmosphere.
Days Gone gets a lot stick for parroting many of the staples of the open world formula, but I believe it elevates the system where many others do not.
I heard Bend was making some live service nonsense. Half of me wants it to work out for the team and half of me wants it to tank just to make Sony look stupid. DG was excellent and easily deserved a sequel.
@Mustoe Was far better than Horizon 2 and Sony seem hell bent on running that crap into the ground. Well get lots of sequels to that and I don't think it even deserved one.
"Like I said, people need likes. Time to move on."
People don't need likes. They need real jobs.
@starbuck2212
After enjoying HZD I wasn't a fan of HFW either. It was just so bloated. In fact I felt it was worthy of many of the criticism leveled at Days Gone. That aside, HFW is lovely looking game.
@Mustoe Yeah it is beautiful. That's what carries me through to the end.
Someone posted to Reddit about how they'd tried Days Gone after hearing the hype, and found it only to be decent.
The top response by far was "What hype?"
The game found a niche, and its been really loved and appreciated by they people in that niche. But that doesn't mean Days Gone 2 would have sold like gangbusters.
Days gone was awesome. Never in any way a 6. The hoards were amazing. Issue was it was a bit rough on release and the reviews reflected that. Fully believe if it was reviewed now it'd score 80+
I know several people with the same Days Gone story: passed it over at launch, got it free/cheap years later, and were really blown away by how good it was.
Problem is, those people weren't there paying full price for it (although they might for a sequel) so it doesn't mean much to Sony. Second, and I think more significant, problem is that the zombie pop culture craze had died down since its release. Sony has a finite amount of resources for AAA development, they're already committed to Last of Us and the zombie sub-genre's popularity doesn't really justify a second game dedicated to it anymore. If Days Gone were not a zombie game I think it might get another shot, but it is so it's going to be viewed as redundant.
Anything we like we don't get. Anything mediocre we get.
This studio has said for like how many years that there is no sequel how r we still here
I actually think of it as a game "what if". It's a decent game in my books and really should have been played more. But I don't think it's a spectacular game. I have tried to beat the game fully twice and both times quit at around 20hrs mark, so basically never finished the story nor all side quests. Something felt slightly off with traversal to me,or more like map world felt a bit too constrained. Felt like a very linear open world. Almost like far cry 2
@Drago201 look, obviously they are just trying to downplay it so they can drop it out of nowhere the next summer fest and everyone would go wild
@glennthefrog
I'm not sure how well it did at launch and I know I'm one of the few that did buy it at launch as I was intrigued the moment I knew about it. The reviews were harsh on it, in particular IGN who unjustly scored it low simply because it had a "gruff, white, male protagonist". Any respect I had left for modern day game reviewers pretty much died that day.
I wish the best of luck to the creators of Bubsy 3D.
Days Gone sold similar numbers to Horizon Forbidden West and that game is seen as a huge success, getting dlc and a LEGO spin-off.
I don’t know what issue Sony have with Days Gone? The horde fights were the most intense encounters in any game ever made.
@MrMeeeseeeks Not similar. Horizon FW sold 8.4 million copies only in 1 year (PS4 & 5 combine). But Days Gone needs like 4 years to sell 7.3 million copies (PS4 only, not counting PC ver) and that was after a lot of big discount. Which means Horizon FW gave Sony much faster break even and more revenue + profit than Days Gone. That is why Horizon got DLC & spin-off while Days Gone still in the shelf.
And to clear the misunderstanding, sales numbers is not the only main factor to greenlight a sequel. If the director doesn't have a good presentation that can convince Sony then the sequel wouldn't get greenlight despite previous game sold millions of copies.
Remember, this is not just about satisfying the fans or making a lot of money but also about making good sequel that improved from the previous game and does justice to the IP's brand. Take example of GoW franchise. Despite of lower review scores compare to GoW 3, Ascension actually sold quite well at 3 million copies and gave $100 million revenue + strong ROI for Sony. But if you watch behind the scenes video for GoW 2018, Cory Barlog actually pitched multiple ideas for a sequel and Sony rejected all of them because the ideas wasn't interesting nor can make the franchise fresh again. If Sony doesn't agreed with Cory final pitched then we wouldn't see GoW 2018 & Ragnarok.
Don't apologise for Gaming bible. Trash pages ran by absolute grifters. They know what they do.
I don't really buy games at launch but "if" there was a Days Gone 2
I would pre order that.
@Starkei
What even is that you are saying? I don't understand. Plus, can you point out the error in their reporting?
I always viewed Days Gone as Mad Max with all of the personality sucked out. I played for maybe two or three hours but had to bow out not long after. There are interesting systems in place, but when it's all brought together, it's just a painfully average open world zombie survival.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I dislike them for the same reason I found Aloy annoying. All the breathing and huffing seems like someone trying to passive aggressively let others know how hard they are working. Maybe if you are laboring to breathe and hiding from
zombies or robot dinos you should just stfu ya know?
voice acting is good, whatever the director/direction was is kinda obtuse
I think Days Gone polarized people like all the bargain bin anime games do. There are people who seem to play every game that comes out, regardless of genre, if it looks anime-y. Similarly, there are people who are going to find this protagonist and his friends pretty cringey, unless of course it reinforces their narrative or worldview on normalcy and the “everyman”.
It is not a bad game, by any stretch of the imagination, but feels like a PS game made for an XBox crowd or something.
Yea but the Zombie hype is so 2007.
@fancy_bandage_PSN
Anime? What are you talking about. This ain't Asian anime, anyways. And if you are talking about American anime, then I've never heard about it before. I guess you found the unoccupied opinion.
A lot of people in here that doesn't understand the quality of this game's zombie horde mechanic. So they belittle those that do. It is funny and provoking. I might verbally drop kick every one of these posers 💪😎
I truly hope its a single player game and nota live service game.
I swear I remember them saying something about a multiplayer game when they announced they was working on a new ip, but I think I may of dreamt it.
Days gone does deserve a sequel, it was a great game in the end.
Everytime I read "white protagonist" I think I will start writing "black protagonist" and so on in my comments about other games and see how long it takes before I'm called racist...
Shouldn't it work both ways? 🤷
Those "white protagonist" reviews should been called out for being woke and racist but no one dared. Sad thing really.
I think it was a solid 8 and would love a sequel! And yes it was a 8, that is why we all still talks about the game, 6 or less and it would have been forgotten in my opinion.
Since I doubt they will ever come back to this franchise why not release what they had as a story board thing
I really enjoyed days gone, more so then last of us two anyway
@fancy_bandage_PSN a ps game made for a Xbox? Wtf does that even mean
@trev666 But at what price point the game was so cheap in the end. If you need to sell 4 copies to make a full price then it's not that impressive anymore. And David Jaffe did a lot of damage with his big mouth. It's a pity I would love to see a fully polished and patched PS5 version of the game though.
Is unfortunate for what they prepped even though we already knew this, that and Bend hasn't had a trilogy in years but at the same time regardless to me whether a sequel or a new IP if it's just as much a cinematic IP with less compelling gameplay I'm still not interested in it.
I've always thought they should run a Kickstarter to fund part 2, loved days gone and I reckon they would get more than enough to make a fully fledged sequel
I think Sony should take note of the fact that people are still talking about this game and the demand for a sequel is there. The one thing I like about days gone is that is was just...........fun, it is a fun game and we don't get enough of those these days.
On the flip side I think the problem is that there are soooooooo many zombie games now (freakers/zombies, same difference) that it's just starting to get silly and maybe that was one of the reasons behind it not getting the green light, these zombie games are standing out much less than they did 10-15 years ago.
