Black Myth: Wukong received a new cinematic trailer during Summer Game Fest, but the bigger story here is that the upcoming action game — set to release on the 20th August — is now a PS5 console exclusive at launch. But before everyone starts screaming about Sony somehow moneyhatting the title, this is actually down to Xbox.
On its official website, developer Game Science explains that additional optimisation is needed for the Xbox Series X|S version of the game, and so it won't be releasing on the same day as its PS5 and PC counterparts.
"We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards," the FAQ page continues.
So there you have it, Black Myth: Wukong is technically a PS5 console exclusive until further notice. Did you see this coming? Extend your staff in the comments section below.

Basically the Series S can't cope, it's Baldurs Gate 3 all over again.
Sony’s approach to a cheaper version of the PS5 was clearly a great decision. I expect the PS6 will launch in a similar fashion. Now what about the PS5 Pro, hmmm 🤔

More gameplay! Less CGI Hype! I saw a 'leaked' promo of this two years ago and it looked amazing.
@j2c
Yep, Xbox should have had an all digital series x for the same price and not the series s.
The black 1tb series s is £300.
At the moment in the UK you can PS5 digital 1tb for £350.
Why buy the series s.
@awp69 Google the definition of indefinite before you comment. You're overdosing on copium
@awp69 You do know Indefinite means "unknown length of time" right?
@SolarSailor The story itself is console warring. How am I console warring? Did I say anything negative about PlayStation? Nope.
@j2c there will be no cheaper version of the PS5 Pro. It just doesn’t make sense. You want a PS5, you have the cheaper version (discless), the standard version and the premium version (Pro).
That is unfortunate. I hope they are able to iron out any issues quickly so xbox players can get to play the title shortly after everyone else.
Lol poor Xbox.
Anyway. For the rest of this year we'll have Black Myth Wukong, Astro Bot, SH 2 remake, Lego Horizon, Slittherhead, Zeneles Zone Zero, Sly Cooper 1 port, and some interesting multiplats like Metaphor Re Fantazio, Kunitsu Gami, EDF 6, Metal Slug Tactics, Clock Tower 1 remaster, Visions of Mana, and Tomba collection?
Hey not bad at all. I say PS4/5 owners are eating good this year.
Series X and S owners are starting to turn on each other over on X and Reddit over this lmao.
After BG3, one of the biggest games this year also getting delayed is pretty funny ngl.
@UltimateOtaku91 More like the usual. "We're a small devs team, and can't make work on multiple platforms at the same time, so are focusing on the biggest player base first".
We saw the same thing last gen. Xbox is just not a priority.
Sucks that not everyone will get to play it right away. Remembering all the discourse a while back about the frustrations some devs felt about having to make their games for the S too, I'm starting to wonder how long it'll be until some just start saying "no".
@JackiePriest larian kind of did, series s doesn't have local co op, before that it was a politic of publishing on xbox that both versions had to be equal but they had to fold because BG3 was too big of a game.
Xbox logo doesn't appear at the end of the trailer.
Media on twitter: "Sony is paying for this event, unbelievable"
Don't give Sony credit they don't deserve, the series S can delay games all by its own without help lol.
@UltimateOtaku91 they played a big gamble on releasing a cheaper weaker console and it didn't pay off like they wanted it to. Having to be in par with the series x is going to just keep hurting them
Huge get for Sony and they didn't need to do a thing. I bet its the SS causing issues again, the game is big on visuals and may be too demanding for very weak hardware like the SS.
Given the information that so many people are still on PS4, Sony could probably do a Pro next fall with GTA 6 and then launch PS6 in 2030. Longer generations could work because they are making so much money compared to previous generations.
I still remember when Microsoft announced the Xbox One X and people were speculating that tge PS4 would hold it back. Maybe everyone should stop making predictions about how great Xbox is.
Cool, if you’re on board. But his is the most busted first half of a “new generation” I’ve witnessed in my lifetime. NES 8bit was my first system btw.
We’re only halfway through this generation and the Series S is having serious issues getting certain multiplat titles.
How is it possibly going to be able to properly run games like GTA VI?
@bauer_ It’s more likely that the PS5 Pro ships without a disc drive to keep cost down. If we want it, we can purchase one to add to it, the PS6 might take a similar approach. But I’m glad you know exactly what their plan is so we know what to expect.
@DennisReynolds hey man don't forget the ps5 is out dated and weak tech as well 🤣
Is this really such a big deal? It's being developed by an unproven Chinese developer, from what I can find. I might be wrong, but I'm sensing this will probably be a flop like The Day Before.
@Northern_munkey Compared to the SS it might as well be a 4090.
@Mythologue Every trailer has been fantastic and they have shown a fair amount of gameplay that looks fantastic. The Days Before looked worse every time it shown something "new" off, kept being delayed and had "Devs" that done nothing but act shady.
@jFug Imagine if GTA VI gets delayed on Xbox because of the SS? 😬
@DennisReynolds it won't, I belive GTA 6 will be the top consoles only,
They just gotta follow ubi with AC: Shadows...no junk version, no ps4 version, really is time to move on now
@awp69 Do you not know what the word indefinite means?
And thus Series S continues to be a blight upon developers and Xbox users both.
@Mythologue Not even in the same dimension as a scam like The Day Before. We'll have to wait for launch to see if it's truly good, but for starters it's evident that it is a real game with real effort put into it, unlike whatever the hell TDB was.
Also, why the "unproven Chinese developer", as though the devs' country of origin somehow makes them worse than any other "unproven developer"? Failed first projects can come from literally anywhere.
How the Xbox is still supported is a mystery to me anyway. Outside the USA this console is dead! and not even GTA VI will save this console.
As we get further into the generation, devs are signalling they are hampered by Xbox Series S's specs. Microsoft have certainly held games back and I'm glad devs can just release and work on their ports with more time.
@awp69 it’s not that deep man.
@awp69 If you were into programming, you would understand that optimizing a massive project like this can take months.
So nothing then
@jFug better dev with much much more money and dev time so GTA6 will be just fine on series s
Thanks series S 🤣🤣🤣
Actually, @DennisReynolds, the S is not 'very weak' hardware, unless you consider the PS4 to be exceptionally weak? The S is actually more powerful than the PS4 and the Xbox One X, it's just not as powerful as the PS5 and the Series X.
Personally, I dislike the S and think it was a mistake, whereas I much prefer the approach taken by Sony. I think the S is still likely the problem over at Xbox, but also the fact that they have a much smaller install base over there and thus are less of a priority than the Sony crowd. The problem is most likely to also be the Microsoft instance on having the game running the same on both the X and the S, which means more work for developers, and again, with Xbox being a lesser priority, that means it gets pushed to the back of the 'To Do' list...
@Fiendish-Beaver All the consoles are weak, they're using mid range 2019ish hardware. The PS4 is weak it was on release and even more so now. Its the nature of console gaming we're getting dated tech from day 1.
So how close to launch before they tell us it will run at 30fps?
This pretty much confirms what we all knew was going to happen when Microsoft announced its ***** rule: The Series S low specs are holding back this generation.
Well,...yes, @DennisReynolds, but that is the same with every tech device ever created the moment it first rolls of the production line. Even the latest tech will be superseded in mere days following release, and that's true even of PC's. You can put the latest graphics card in one day, only for a better one to come out a few days later. There really isn't much that can be done about that...
@Fiendish-Beaver and the Series S is barely more powerful then the One X. Fact is its causing issues, the Kingdom Come devs have admitted they had to lower the scope of the game because of the damn console. SS is weak its really weak and its not acceptable for a current gen console, it was fine early on when it was running cross gen games but current gen games are proving too much.
I'm sorry, @DennisReynolds, but to say the S is really weak is totally ridiculous. It is more powerful than the previous generation, which alone means it is not weak, let alone really weak. It also plays pretty much every game released this generation, something that the previous generation cannot boast.
As for Kingdom Come, there are many in the industry pointing to the fact that the S is capable of playing much more demanding games than their newest game, and that's before you get into the game apparently being both twice as big as the previous game, and also only 20% bigger! Many are pointing out that it is either an excuse, a failing on their part, or sour grapes (for reasons unknown). It is an absolute guarantee that BG3, whilst not capable of co-op play, will prove to be a far more demanding game than Kingdom Come, so make of that what you will.
Is the S holding back some games? Absolutely! I honestly believe it is, but the exception that I take with your comment is describing it as 'weak'. Should Microsoft have done the same as Sony? Absolutely! Has the S proven to be a mistake? Yes, in my honest belief, though it has also introduced many to the Xbox ecosystem and Game Pass at an affordable price point.
Lastly, everyone, including myself, is assuming that the problem lies with the S, but no one in the know has actually stated that. It could quite honestly be down to the the developers priorities, and that they want to get the game out of the gate and on to the PS5 before they turn their attention to the Xbox, and this is down to the size of the community on the Xbox and that alone. We simply do not know...
@Gaia093 Umm...no. Unproven Chinese developer because;
1) This is the first result that comes up when searching for the game.
"Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming action role-playing game by Chinese developer Game Science..."
2) There are two companies named Game Science. One is Chinese, the other is American. It's an ambiguity issue.
If this statement is to be believed, is anyone surprised by XBOX limitations at this point. They are always trying to compete with Nintendo and for a "next gen" experience, this is not a smart business move. They should've learned what devs want after the 360° they did announcing the 360.
@Fiendish-Beaver You understand last gen consoles were perfectly under-powered right from the start? Why do you think there was so many downgrades from pre-release footage? Its because everyone was expecting more powerful consoles. The SS being slightly better then the One X is not good at all.
More and more the SS is seeing major downgrades, more and more games are being delayed because of it and more and more Devs are speaking out against it. The PS5 and SX are dated weak hardware so yeah the SS is very weak, it was low end in 2020 and its even worse now.
Wanna know something i own a SS mainly for BC and the exclusives so i know first hand how weak it is. Its even missing features the One X has because its too weak to have them.
So by your logic, @DennisReynolds, when the PS5 Pro launches later this year, it is weak and dated because the hardware it contains will be at least one or two years old?
Truth is, it will not be weak, it will be the best console available. Just as the X and the PS5 are currently the best available, and not weak when compared to the previous generation. The S is on the same footing, better than the previous generation. And so it goes on. It's a very strange position to hold that a console is outdated the moment it hits the shelves simply because better architecture will be available almost straight away. Even the best computer in the world will have components that have been better because of the march of progress and development.
It simply makes no sense to dismiss a console until it has been superseded. Only when the best available is bettered, does it become second best...
@Fiendish-Beaver The SS is in a really awkward position for XBOX imo, as like you I believe the weaker system was a mistake and has caused them a lot of headaches due to their own parity rules.
That said its also made up a very large chunk of the sales that I don't think would have converted directly to SX's if the SS was not on the market, so on that front maybe it was a good decision for the brand.
Would be great if they could drop the parity rule and release early earlier on the SX but if they did then I imagine you would get a fair amount of games just never being optimised for the SS. At this point its hard to say which option is better.
Absolutely agree, @Ilyn. I think the existence of the S is one of the reasons that Xbox are being rumoured to be bringing out the next generation of Xbox in 2026. I think they are doing it so soon so as to do things differently next time as the S has been both a blessing and curse for them, and I think they seek an easier life, truth be told...
@Fiendish-Beaver I had seen the rumours about the next console in 2026 but have no idea how well that will go down if its highligted as a new generation. Six years life span for a generation would seem shorter than it should be, more so when neither console has hit its stride yet.
Brings us back to the real problem that games take longer to create than the machines they are played on now.
