As promised, Ubisoft debuted a lengthy gameplay video for Assassin's Creed Shadows at its summer showcase. As you'd expect, the developer appears to have nailed things from a environmental perspective, with the game boasting an impressively attractive portrayal of Japan. What's more, it seems to be a cut above previous Assassin's Creed titles in terms of graphics, which is probably down to it being current-gen exclusive.
Anyway, the actual gameplay looks solid enough — although some of the combat animations seem a bit rough. It's no Ghost of Tsushima in that department, but things could obviously be smoothed out before launch.
Meanwhile, the stealth mechanics have been given a big update. Naoe looks to be one of the most agile player characters yet, and she's capable of some silky acrobatics.
The dual protagonists clearly play quite differently from one another, and you can freely switch between them. Ubisoft says that some missions and objectives will force you into playing as either Naoe or Yasuke — especially when things are story-driven — but for the vast majority of the game, you'll be able to choose who you want to adventure as.

This looks quite a bit rougher than I expected, although it's still months away from release.
Looks like fun to me. Little rough around the edges, animation wise for Yasuke, but the core idea is sound.
@ShogunRok Indeed it looks really rough AND clunky.
@Zuljaras I remember Valhalla looked really rough and unfinished when it was first shown. It got cleaned up quite a bit for release but it still wasn't perfect. Hopefully Shadows comes together better.
@ShogunRok I do not know if it is just me but are they using the graphical style of Mirage? The movement, camera and the graphics look almost identical to Mirage.
@Zuljaras Yeah, it'll be using the same animation blueprint as Mirage and past games, to some extent. It's been this way since the franchise was rebooted with Origins.
Although Naoe definitely has some new stealth animations, which is good to see. The stealth does look quite fluid at least.
The stealth looks really great for sure! I do agree the combat animations look a bit rough around the edges though. Not terrible but not great either. I'll definitely be playing as Naoe the most of the two.
yes exactly what I expected Valhalla with Japan Skin.
I'm also shocked at how colorless this game is. Ghost of Tsushima overwhelmed you with colors but this just seems totally boring.
Yes no, I'm out. I can no longer see this Ubislop where you basically do the same thing for 100+ hours.
@ShogunRok There's still time for them to clean it up.
Thought the game looked pretty good TBH. I'm looking forward to playing it!
I can see say that taken a lot of inspiration from GOT. Which I like. For me, looks promising.
Does this have all the terrible bloat of the last game?
The combat in this game seems off for some reason. Yasuke's combat looked a bit bland. Naoe looks like she's going to be cool to use(As was Evie better than Jacob in Syndicate).
I hope they tighten up the combat but I feel like Yasuke's size made the sword combat look bad. Naoe looked a bit more fluid but I hope they tighten it up.
The Voice acting was kind of off too but it will probably grow on me.
@Falcon94
it's an AC RPG so yes.
@Falcon94 We know the map's smaller, but outside of that, we'll have to wait and see.
@KawakiisaFraud you saw 2 sections of isolated gameplay, the first being quite colourful, the second one being at night and raining and decided that represented the whole game?
By reading the rest of your comment and other comments, it’s easy to tell you had your mind made up before you even clicked the play button.
Anyone else get big Tenchu vibes from that stealth section?
Also Naoe is so small😂.
I really like the section with the sinobi but the samurai one....meh. Better than i expected but still the combat lack of "impact", expecially when he fights with the katana.
Playing three days early. Hell yeah.
I'm still on the fence with this one myself. However, it looks about as good as most of the other Assassin's Creed games. I have too much to play this fall already and this may be the first AC game I don't get at launch since Unity. It is tempting though, AC to me is like comfort food, and I do love some Ubisoft Open World checkmark maps.
The game definitely needs more polish but I'm legit excited for it. I'm such a sucker for samurai stuff, and this is enough for me to get back into Assassin's Creed.
I’m definitely interested in this now that I saw some footage. It’s rough around the edges, but there are a lot of interesting gameplay elements from the female protagonist’s perspective. It seems Splinter Cell-ish, and I’m all for that. My only quibbles with AC games is the easiness of stealth no matter the difficulty — it almost makes the game less fun because of the lack of challenge. Furthermore, I don’t like the red highlight of enemies, and the white outline of your character. It ruins the immersion for me. With that said, I can look past all of that, so this should be a fun time.
This looks so janky! even by ubi-standards, think im gonna hold off on buying this at launch, but pleased to see they have continued the long AC tradition of featuring children with terrifying adult faces.
The ninja gameplay looks great, and that’s what I’m interested in. Day one for me.
@homelesscretin the ceiling grab was straight of Tenchu. Can’t wait for this.
I think it looks very good. Got even more hyped for the game!! The combat is amazing, and the stealth is very fluid!!
Stealth gameplay looks fun, the samurai combat was pretty janky. The rest just looks like the same current ac stuff. It's the repetitive nature of their Open world bloat and design framework that makes ac gameplay get so stale no Matter how fun initially.
Hopefully it's more refined. However I highly doubt it is. I do agree though that it looked rough all around.
It definitely looks interesting… I probably only pick since they are releasing a version for iPad. But Ghost of Tsushima will continue to be king of Japan/Samurai games. I
Assassins creed shadows definitely looks amazing.the gameplay looks so fun.especially as yasuke.word up son
After playing Ghost of Tsushima, this looks kinda underwhelming.
This should hold me over until Ghost of Tsushima 2 arrives, plus great to be back to AC Rpg
Naoe gameplay looks a lot better than Yasuke because it feels like classic AC / Tenchu vibe. I'm not surprised if people pick Naoe more than Yasuke lol.
What a surprise it looks like trash 🙄
I’ll wait for this to hit the $10 bargain bin, as we all know it will.
Combat is floaty just like valhalla, only good thing i saw was the other character grabbing enemies and dragging them to a secluded spot to assasinate them. I'm sure the game will do well purely because it's set in japan, lot of "gamers" obsessed with the place like it's a whole different planet, to me it's just boring and I'd much rather have assassin's creed set during the crusades again.
This looks like playing a robot lost in Japan. I can't imagine this having any emotional impact on me. I loved the old ac games but the latest just all look the same to me. But for those who love it, I'm glad for you there's a new ac game on the horizon, but this is not for me.
